Re: Ultimate Server (5.1) install guide on Ubuntu (9.10)

R, I dont know how you start your server ... the /etc/init.d/twonkyserver is a script that kicks off the <install dir>/twonkymedia.sh which on its turn starts the processes twonkymedia and twonkyserver. If you want to start (or stop; then replace stop for start) twonkymedia from the command line, yo...

Re: Ultimate Server (5.1) install guide on Ubuntu (9.10)

I actually tested it again against the 6.0.28 server on Ubuntu 10.04 and indeed - the basics in my guide are still valid. One good thing is that some of the error messages have disappeared, but really the best is that twonky now can run as normal user from the startup script in rc.d. Original text u...

Re: Error in Linux 'start as another user' (sudo -u <user>)

mgilespie, thanks for the reply, but I don't think TMS needs root permissions. 1) TMS can quite happily run with limited permissions when kicked off by a normal user ("<install dir>twonkymedia start") so why not at boot time from init.d 2) the sudo -u is a normal way of starting processes with limit...

Re: New Feature Requests

By far the most functional features we need is to be able to customize the navigation tree and the music track order; then the subtitles. However .. there is a security issue as well. When TMS starts as a system service (a daemon under unix) it has root privileges - however anyone can access the loc...

Error in Linux 'start as another user' (sudo -u <user>)

In my ultimate desire to make a good Ubuntu twonky install, I hit what I believe is an error in twonkymedia server. If I start the executable twonkymedia in the install directory, as bare as possible, with ./twonkymedia , it will start the daemons twonkymedia and twonkymediaserver that I find in the...

Re: Stopping Twonky Media Server

If you have installed twonky with sudo then there indeed is a file in /etc/init.d. In ubuntu 9.10 /tms 5.1.2 it is called twonkyserver however. The neat way of stopping it, is: sudo /etc/init.d/twonkyserver stop You could also have started twonky from the install directory, from a normal login. In t...

Sort order of Tracks totally wrong in Folder navigation

I was totally surprised that with my WD LIVE I browsed through the Twonky Music folders and it did not present the correct sort order of my tracks - whereas the order is in the Tags as well as in the filenames!! I checked the :9000 HTTP Media Browser - same thing!! Twonky Server (5.1 / Ubunt...

Ultimate Server (5.1) install guide on Ubuntu (9.10)

I thought there is a need for a more comprehensive install guide for twonky on unbuntu - here it is. A replay or gathering of earlier posts into the newest versions - tested&verified against Twonkyserver 2.2.5-5.1.3 and Ubuntu 9.10, but I am convinced it will work on other ubuntu versions - since it...

Re: Autostart in ubuntu 9.10

I think upstart only works when you have logged in - no good. Should be a system service auto start.

DVD and Video Metadata or Tags

I am using TMS on Ubuntu and it runs great; use it with WDTV Live. Now for the content. Of course everybody knows that Music needs ID tags. Perfect. But what about videos? 1) I don't know if TMS can handle such tags and 2) I don't know how to apply tags to my .divx or other video files. No Howto on ...
