All those bullets above relating to file access problems and how deep it went seemed to have "gone away" in subsequent Qnap firmware upgrades (which also have incremental TM upgrades as well). Now my media player (the trusty Popcorn Hour A-110) sees all files under the Qnap's TwonkyMedia DLNA server...

Also it appears all my folder levels are now captured so some things are working out. I will continue to check out the rest.
