When you say that you can view them in Vista, is that via Twonky or via a file share (I'm guessing file share)?
It could be a limitation in such an old version of Twonky - have you tried to see if there is a 6.0 version available for your NAS?

The first thing Twonky will know is when it gets a connection from the TV - that will be the first time the TV becomes active on the network for anything other than DHCP. Disks aren't generally designed to spin up and down, so what you're saving in power consumption is being offset by the reduced lifespan of the disks. If your TV supports playback from USB your best test is to put the movie on a USB device and connect it to the TV. If it can't play it that way then you won't get it playing through any media server without transcoding.

If you don't have an UPS all you'd have is a message about the previous shutdown being unexpected, and others that are normal for a startup.

Ah, stuff under /media is automatically mounted by a daemon, not by the system, after boot (and if you're running the Desktop version it may well require a logon to initiate that process). You'll find things much more reliable if you create an entry in /etc/fstab to mount it (somewhere else) at boot...

Having it in /etc/init.d/ and having it added to the startup should be quite sufficient. If you're having to add it to /etc/rc.local then you've got either something wrong with your script in /etc/init.d/ or you've got something wrong with your system. Startup scripts (those in /etc/init.d/, /etc/in...

Transcoding on the fly is non-trivial. You'd need a top specification Intel i7 system to keep up with it for HD (and even then it probably wouldn't). It is much, much, more efficient to transcode it once and then stream that repeatedly.
