DSM 520 Firmware Upgrade

Post by Tiffosi2000 » Sun May 06, 2007 1:02 pm

Hi,

I have a DSM 520 with firmware version 1.01R2EU. Although the internet connection test works fine on the 520, it will connect to the update server. I get the 'failed to connect to server check network connections' messge.

I have phoned Dlink about this but i just get left on hold for ages and then they tell me to manually browse, this cant be done on V1.01!

Any ideas anyone??

Thanks

I don't think there is any newer version, see ftp://hqftp.dlink.com.tw/medialounge/DSM520

BTW: if you want a different FW, you can play on your own risk.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/medialounge/DSM520

enable telnet
( from http://forums.freytechnologies.com/foru ... 78&page=12 )

1) Get the box established with a media server (ie Windows Media Player 11).
2) Go to the Version update area on the DSM-520 by pressing [Setup] on the remote.

3) Then on the remote press [Menu]->[Page Up]->[Page Up]->[Page Down]->[2]

The box will display on your tv that the telnet daemon has started.

4) Go to a command prompt on your computer and type "telnet"
5) Then type "Open <ip>"

cd /tmp/conf
cat config

change the config with cfg -config_change <value>
maybe do a cfg -save

I didn't try to get a new FW. Maybe this can be achieved by changing the FW path?

good luck.

I "upgraded" and it's hosed my setup. I have Twonky running on a linux server and now the 520 freezes after playing 10-15 seconds of an AVI file. Any way to revert the firmware back? Any other suggestions?

I downloaded an open source upnp server called userver and my "updated" dsm-520 seems to be working fine...http://ushare.geexbox.org/

Damn it v1.03!

Post by junkcave » Thu Jun 21, 2007 4:33 pm

I too am having the same problem:

- woke up one morning and saw there is a new firmware v1.03
- pressed the "upgrade" button thinking maybe the Unicode display problem has been fixed
- after the upgrade, ALL video STOPPED working!!! they would play for a few seconds and then either the video freezes, or the sound stops.......

So after a few nights of struggling with my DSM-520, I finally found a way to restore my good old v1.02 firmware, and here's what I did:

1. Download the old firmware v1.02 from dlink
(ftp.dlink.com/medialounge/DSM520)

2. Download JANA server and config the FTP and DNS server; follow the config instruction on this web site

2a. Manually map new DNS entry in JANA so that ftp.dlink.com and http://www.dlink.com points to your own IP

2b. Config the FTP server so that "ftp.dlink.com/medialounge/DSM520" points to a location in your local disk, where you placed the v1.02 firmware. (remember to change the DSM520-VerInfo.txt file so that VERSION='1.031')

3. Change the IP Config on the DSM-520; point the DNS Server to your local machine

4. Check for firmware Updates, it should find a new update, and restore v1.02!!!!!

5. After the firmware "downgrade", remember to set the "automatically check for new updates" to NO!!!!!!

Alas! Hope someone find this helpful :-)

Just a quick "me too" here. Great post and fix for this, junkcave.

Any word from D-Link about this? Seems like a pretty big screw up.

Hard reset

Post by gerdi » Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:02 am

In the back of the dsm there is a reset button for hard reset. This should bring back the factory settings.
Does this not work either in this box?

Haven't tried it...seems too simple doesn't it? :) I'd assume that post-flash 1.03 would be the 'new' factory default.

Jeff,
We are currently working on an updated firmware release that will address the Xvid playback issues that were introduced in the 1.03 firmware for the DSM-520. This new firmware will be released ASAP after it has gone through testing.

Please note that it is impossible to downgrade the DSM-520 with a firmware that is named lower than the current version.

Should you require further assistance with your D-Link products, please reply to this message, or call toll free at 877-453-5465.
One question IRT the reflash: should the firmware filename in the txt file be changed as well? Also, I wonder if we reflash to '1.031' if we won't inadvertently lock ourselves out from a future D-Link upgrade.

Jeffelkins, the firmware filename can stay the same. Also, when you finished reflash "1.031", the system recognizes that the firmware file is actually 1.02, and will display as such - so future upgrades (if you still want to try it) shouldn't be a problem.

That's good news!

I don't use windows, so I'm setting this up under linux. I've got the *.dlink.com addresses pointed to my server and am working on the ftpd portion.

Success! Back to 1.02

For my linux-based network my steps were a bit different.

1. Download the DSM520_2006.06.12-2043__1.02 and
DSM520-VerInfo.txt from dlink.

2. Create a root directory, then create (mkdir) mediaounge and under it DSM520. Copy the downloaded files to DSM520

3. In my open-wrt based router I changed the /etc/hosts file to point http://www.dlink.com and ftp.dlink.com to the server hosting the downloaded dlink content on the network. Your method may vary, but changing /etc/hosts worked for me, I didn't have to setup a dns server.

4. On that local server enable an ftpd server with anonymous logins allowed. Anonymous logins should land in the directory where you created the medialounge directory. For me that was /ftp

With my initial start the DS520 found the upgrade, then failed to complete the download. Checking my ftpd log I found:

Jun 22 10:46:38 Fri Jun 22 10:46:38 2007 LOGIN: dlink.lan (192.168.0.6) "anonymous" "anonymous" ""
Jun 22 10:46:38 DEBUG parse_ftp_command("CDUP")
Jun 22 10:46:38 DEBUG parse_ftp_command("TYPE I")
Jun 22 10:46:38 DEBUG parse_ftp_command("SIZE /medialounge/DSM520/DSM520_2007.06.08-1044__1.03")
Jun 22 10:46:38 DEBUG parse_ftp_command("PASV")
Jun 22 10:46:38 DEBUG parse_ftp_command("RETR /medialounge/DSM520/DSM520_2007.06.08-1044__1.03")
Jun 22 10:46:38 Host disconnected improperly!
This told me that the DSM520 was trying to download: firmware DSM520_2007.06.08-1044__1.03

I edited the DSM520-VerInfo.txt file:

Code: Select all

VERSION='1.031'
LOCATION='DSM520_2006.06.12-2043__1.02'
And the DSM520 found the "update" applied it and I'm back to 1.02. All is well. I then changed my router's host file so the "real" dlink servers are found. BTW, they appear to still be offering the flawed 1.03 firmware. I checked prior to my update and no updates were found. After my "update" to 1.02, the DSM520 found 1.03 and offered to "upgrade" me. No thanks!

1.04 is out

Post by jeffelkins » Sat Jun 23, 2007 2:01 pm

1.04 is out, and it still appears to be broken. I get a system freeze when playing DivX/Xvid files after about 10 seconds so it's back to 1.02 for me.

I have FW 1.01R2EU. However, when I tell the DSM520 to check for updates it says it cannot connect to server. When I check the internet connection the DSM 520 says it passed ok.

I am assuming that I have the European version (I live in the UK and the FW has the letters EU at the end of it!)). On the UK Dlink website there is no mention of any FW upgrade. On the US DLink website I can see the new FW.

Could it be that there are differences between the US and Euro versions so that the machines point to their respective countrys download server? If so is there a way of making my machine look at the US server?

Thanks

I installed 1.04 before I read all of this. The thing I noticed was that the Internet Radio would not play.
It would start and stop and repeat. Is anyone at Twonky talking to Dlink about what is not working with Twonky Media Server with the new FW?

I was able to go back to 1.02 after setting up the local ftp and DNS. Not hard but time consuming.

Exactly the same thing here, with the older version internet radio was okay but now it is only stuttering.

I have an EU model and took the step to put this US version on it. The main difference is that the US version sets the DSM in NTSC mode while the EU version uses PAL (something which can't be changed), it gives distorted video in my case. Also the ability to select the SCART connector is missing in the US version. It is recommended to wait for a new EU version and hopefully issues observed here will be addressed by then.

There are indeed different servers for the US and EU versions. See

One way to do this is by telnet. See earlier in this thread how to start the telnet daemon on the DSM-520. Within the telnet session it is possible to change both URL and filename to your liking (e.g. I let the DSM-520 point to my own internal FTP server for upgrades).

Same Problems (ShoutCast Playback - and more)

Post by jesterfred » Sat Jun 30, 2007 12:53 pm

I upgraded to the 1.04 firmware and noticed two major problems. One, the inability to play internet radio smoothly. It is choppy and repeats. And two, playback of video slows the DSM-520 to the point of unresponsiveness. Once video starts, the remote becomes very sluggish. A button press is responded to after 5 to 10 seconds. Also, the video eventually just halts.

I noticed, after the upgrade, that when browsing available servers, the entry I have for my Twonky server flashes. It is as if the entire list (I have three different servers in my house) of servers is being constantly refreshed. Perhaps there is now an incompatibility in the UPnP registration messages between the Twonky broadcast and the updated DSM-520.

Are others seeing this refresh problem?

Finally got a response from D-Link UK Support about the Firmware. So if you have the UK version, it looks like new firmware will be released shortly.

- - snip - -

The error message you see when checking for upgrades is a known issue, and fortunately is purely cosmetic. All that is happening is that it is showing you the wrong error message, instead of correctly saying that you already have the latest firmware. This has been fixed for the next firmware version, which is due to be released very shortly.

Unfortunately, while the hardware is the same, differing TV standards and
license agreements mean that it is not feasible to use the US firmware on a UK model, nor is there any simple way to load the US firmware onto a UK model.

As mentioned above, the release of the next UK firmware version is imminent, so you should be able to download it within the next week or two.

If you do have any specific problems with the DSM-520, or any features you would like to see implemented, please do tell us, and I will forward them on to the appropriate engineers and product managers.

Hi Nathan, thanks for advising of new s/w availability.

I've tried it out, and it is deffinately not an equivalent to the latest US version.

There is one feature that they have implemented/fixed in the new US version that I want, and that is the ability to "push" Video & Picture content from a UPnP source e.g Nokia Phone to the Renderer without having to use the remote control. This is not working with this EU variant.

I'll be disappointed if this does turn out to be the "final" version for this round in the EU.

D-Link added a newer version on the web page mentioned in an earlier post, dated July 12th. I installed it, but can't really tell the differences or improvements.

Most of my concerns are regarding VOBs with subtitle and language support, nothing improved in that department as far as I can see.

Maybe need to wait for an announcement of D-Link, I suppose the official version won't be that far away.

thanks for the feedback. Did you notice *any* enhancement that comes close to the 1.04 US version (e.g. WPA-PSK/AES encryption, Album Arts, ...)

Still no sign of the new Euro firmware when you click Update Firmaware - so time to go back to UK support and ask when they will release it.

I'll report back what they say . . .

There is a new firmware version dated 24-07-2007, but this one can only be manually installed since it is located in a different directory.

Unfortunately there are no release notes, it makes it hard to tell what changes and improvements are done. It would be nice to know once the official release is here.

Firmware Upgrade Via USB

Post by sebw » Thu Jul 26, 2007 10:18 pm

Interesting post here on firmware upgrading:

Try putting both files on a usb stick then power up dlink. It works
I haven't tried it myself but would avoid having to do all the ftp stuff.

I have the same problem as stw on the 320 thread http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3545

I have the US firmware 1.04 version of DLink-520 and it has serious problems playing all kinds of videos from the Twonky interface. It usually crashes after 10-30 seconds. I had the same problem with 1.03, 1.02 was working great.

On the DLink forums, most people are happy with the 1.04 version (except for seldom audio-video sync problems on certain videos), but all the people using Twonly seems to have the same problem as I do.

After reading stw, I tried starting the film with Cidero and everything went smoothly, that is what makes me think that the culprit is Twonky.

I am using Twonky 4.2 on a MSS and obviously Dlink-520.

Thanks for looking it up

dsm 520 1.01r3eu upgrade

Post by michannigan » Wed Aug 01, 2007 11:35 pm

There is a new upgrade available from dlink .co.uk. If you set the media player to auto check for updates it should detect the update when the unit is switched on. Have installed this update and so far only difference I have found is the USB port now recogises usb devices and plays content OK.

I can confirm my DSM 520 automatically downloaded and installed the new UK firmware when I turned it on over the weekend. Everything installed ok wirelessly

I am a bit peeved with DLink UK support who didn't respond to my email asking when the UK firmware would be released. I carefully worded the email to ask whether new firmware was available because my unit was still throwing up the usual error message and I wanted to make sure my unit was not faulty.

They could easily have answered my simple request by saying it was not currently available but would be out on . . .

This would have put my mind at rest that my unit was ok.

Anyhow. Update installed ok. Can't see much that is new though.

I have also upgraded to 1.01r3, and can confirm that the manual check for new firmware now correctly reports my firmware as being up to date, rather than complaining of some network connection problem.

DSM520 and Twonky 4.4.1

Post by firestormo » Fri Aug 17, 2007 1:38 am

The upgrade that corrected issues for video (4.4.1 of twonky server) on the DSM320 also works on the DSM 520 running firmware ver 1.04 without issues, my xvid and divx movies dont freese after 10 seconds.

Still not working with SRT subtitle files.. but atleast the video works.. next hopefully the subtitles will work on the 520

Does anyone know the improvements made in version 1.0.1r3 of DSM-520?

I mainly use the DSM to watch videos (VOBs) but I don't see/experience any changes from the previous firmware. That is: (1) it is not possible to select audio stream or subtitle stream. (2) an annoying 2 second delay exists between subsequent VOB files. (3) Menus are not working.

These issues have been discussed and pointed out a long time ago. Frankly speaking I am quite disappointed that still no solution is given!

I had an downgraded via a ftp server using a newer version number in the config file and pointing it to 1.02, then when I upgraded i just pointed it to the normal dlink site, It looks at version number installed. Like when I downgraded from 1.04 in the config file i put something like 1.041 and pointed it to the 1.02 image, well when it rebooted it show'd 1.02, then for the upgrade pointing it to the normal dlink ftp site, it downloaded and installed 1.04 without any questions or problems it knew that my version was older.

Finally got a reply from D-Link UK about thwhat is new in this firmware - As you can see it is a bit disapointing when compared to the US firmware:

Dear Steve,

there are two major changes in the new firmware, along with some minor
bugfixes. These are:

- improved USB support - more devices are now recognised, and it will now more
reliably detect a device that has been connected without requiring a reboot
- the firmware upgrade feature now correctly reports that no new firmware is
available instead of showing a network connection error

I hope that answers your question, but do feel free to contact us again if we
can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,
D-Link Support

I mainly use the DSM to watch videos (VOBs) but I don't see/experience any changes from the previous firmware. That is: (1) it is not possible to select audio stream or subtitle stream. (2) an annoying 2 second delay exists between subsequent VOB files. (3) Menus are not working.

These issues have been discussed and pointed out a long time ago. Frankly speaking I am quite disappointed that still no solution is given!

in HD (720/1080) mode besides the frame rate it shouldn't matter if it's the US or EU version...

but the TV has to be able to play both EU and US HDTV... most EU HDTV's can do that, but most US HDTV ONLY play 30/60 fps video footage!!! huge bummer...

in the EU HDTV includes 25/50fps and all of the US frame rates, but the US HDTV specs don't inlcude the euro 25/50fps...

D-Link Europe couldn't give us the firmware enhancements that the US folks have enjoyed over the last couple of month. So it is no suprise to see that there is no new firmare for the UK (or euro) people by the October 4 date quoted on D-Link's US website.

Has any one in the US got this new firmware yet?

Just spoke to UK support

Just spoke to UK support (and was routed to an Indian call centre) and surprise, surprise they knew nothing about any new firmware.

So it looks like those of us in the UK are going to be shafted again by D-link. The US get all the the new features and we get nothing - except really poor customer service.

Have just downloaded and installed this to my EU version of the DSM-520 and so far it seams to be working greate.

One of the new features is resume in video playback, if you stop a video and then starts it again the player ask you if you wanna resume where you last stoped.
