Belkin AC 1200 router "My Twonky" media server issue: HELP!

Post by Alfer » Tue Dec 02, 2014 5:45 pm

Hope this is the appropriate spot for this, if not, feel free to move it.

I got a new Belkin AC 1200 router that has "My Twonky" Media Server built in. I tried chatting with Belkin but my "free" tech support has expired as of last month. So they said to contact Twonky.

My problem is this: When I plug in my Seagate compact USB external HD to my router and turn the media server (My Twonky/DLNA) "on" it starts to load all my music files (I have 90,000+) but after just a few thousand are "loaded", it kills my whole internet and I have to reboot my router and modem. I can't for the life of me figure out why this happens. It's done it 3-4 times. I've used two different hard drives as well. Same thing happens. I may get a couple thousand files loaded and then poof, it all stops and my internet dies.

So does My Twonky have some kind of cap/max in place that causes this?? I wouldn't think it would, but you never know.

If anyone can enlighten me or steer me to a way to make this work, I'd greatly appreciate it. I got a new tablet and had high hopes that I could listen to the music I have stored on that new hard drive.

All help/ideas are appreciated!

If I had to guess, I would say that it is more likely that the cpu and ram on the router can not handle it
that is a very large library, I cant think of a single soho router that could handle it
you would be best suited to use a dedicated more powerful nas device or a pc

Thanks.

I did a firmware update in hopes of fixing things and the router/Twonky made it to 10,800 songs loaded then it killed off all internet connections.:(

the other issue you are most likely to run into, is that each time the router is rebooted
or when then usb drive is removed and out back in, the game starts again
the idea of an all in one device is great, IF they put enough ram and a powerful cpu in it, but they don't do that

While on the subject.

Can someone actually explain to me where the music files are being "loaded" to?? I was under the assumption that when I plug the drive in it just allows me or anyone on my network to tap into the files that are on the external HD. But it appears that's not really the case. It's all being uploaded to some mysterious place. That's what has me a bit perplexed.

Any thoughts?

they are not being uploaded anywhere, but a database is of them is being created
dlna is not file sharing, so no its not sharing the in the traditional sense you are thinking of
you need a dlna client to access them, or through the twonky web interface

the db is either being created in a temp directory on the router or on sub folder on the external drive
it depends on how the router and or twonky set it up, and probably out of your control
