BlueTinum BT-H1506A

Post by wormie_dk » Wed Jan 02, 2008 7:25 pm

Hi there

I am trying to get the BlueTinum BT-H1506A to connect to twonkymedia but the twonky server never appears in the list of UPNP servers on the device. Do you have any suggestions for how to solve it or troubleshoot? I cant see the twonky server on my XBOX1 with XBOX media center either but I can mount it using djmount in ubuntu and I can see the webpages on server:9000 so it seems the server is working...

Here is a log of the BlueTinum being turned on. I cleared the log and then turned of/on the BlueTinum and saved the log:

Hi
I have a similar problem using my synology upnp server which works fine with a noxon2 client. I posted a support request with bluetinum but I didn't get an answer up to now.

There are 2 ways to connect the bluetinum to a source of media. one is through cifs shared folders on a windows server. The bluetinum sends a broadcast to the local segment and tries to locate a windows machine. As you can't specify an IP address for a shared drive on a nas in the bt, this did not work in my case.
2nd method should be upnp but the bluetinum does not seem to listen to the advertised upnp service (multicast address 239.255.255.250:1900
In the manual they use winxp mediaplayer 11 as upnp server, I haven't tried this setup, it's not what I want anyway.

this will not help you much but as I experience the same issue I guess it's the BT-H1506A that doesn't properly support upnp, not the upnp server.

I guess we have to wait for a firmware upgrade of the bluetinum

Maybe a support request will give you the answer

hi again
spent some more time to figure out how the bt streaming client functionality is working.
I managed to get streaming to work but the way it is implemented is not very intelligent. They assume that you use a windows machine to stream your music.

As I stated before the bt is looking for a windows machine with a workgroup (I took some wireshark captures and there I could see that it broadcasts NBNS Name Queries (Net Bios Name Service) to my local segment with a directed broadcast to find a workgroup or domain.
If it doesn't find one it's not happy and complains with a network error.

I put a w2k machine in the network and the bt found my workgroup. After I chose the workgroup, the bt started to listen to upnp servers and my Synology NAS upnp server appeared on the display. I could even navigate through my music and play it from my NAS.

I see the main problem in the implementation of the media client which first wants to connect to a windows workgroup before listening to upnp servers. This means that you cant't use a upnp server without having a windows machine up and running at the same time.

If you could connect to a shared folder with an url like "\\1.2.3.4\music" it would be possible to access music from any cifs server in the network but this is not possible at the moment as you can't provide a server ip.

not a brilliant idea either, but...

... perhaps you solve the problem by setting up Windows sharing on the mac? this way the BlueTinum might see the workgroup created by the mac.

It seems like a cool little radio apart from this annoying difficulty.

How is the sound quality? Has it got a headphone socket?

I got it to work with my Ubuntu machine via samba but unfortunately I have to navigate all the way from workgroup -> computer -> share -> folder everytime I want to listen to music. Furthermore the Radio does not sort the list so it comes out in the order which Samba serves it which in my case (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS) apparently is by file creation date... So newest dirs in the buttom of the list.
I have searched around for this and apparently MOST windows machines will serve shared folders in alphabetical order so I guess the Radio just assumes that the order is alphabetical when it gets the list.

If I could get samba to serve an alphabetically ordered list I would not need to use UPNP.

Which UPNP server did you get it to work with? I even tried using the UPNP server in windows media player 11 on a windows machine. The BT radio finds that but cannot list files -> network error. My XBOX can however connect to the windows machine so it cant be a networking issue...

I used the built in UpnP server of my Synology ds101 NAS. SW release 2.0.1 - 3.0371

The bt box has no wired interfaces -> no phone jack (at least without modifying the box)

Sound quality is quite good considering the size of the box. It's a kitchen radio, not a HIFI device--Mono only.

I had similar problems with samba not sorting files/directories. So I implemented a Samba VFS which will sort the output before sending it to the client. If you're still running off SMB/CIFS shares, you may find it helpful.
