HELP: Some music files identified as Unknown

Post by johnwb » Sun May 11, 2008 3:02 pm

UPDATE:
After further investigation, I believe I have found the problem. This update is posted if anyone else encounters a similar issue in the future.

The music files identified as "Unknown" all had both id3 and FLAC tags. All others identified correctly only had FLAC tags. Removing all the id3 tags resulted in an exact match of databases between the TwonkyVision Media Server and Rhythmbox as I expected. To remove the id3 tags, I used the eyed3 command line program from the parent Music folder as follows: eyeD3 --remove-all */*/*.flac

END OF UPDATE

I am testing TwonkyMedia on my system in preparation for purchase of a Linn Sneaky Music DS. I have been able to get it operating and can access the server from other machines on my network. However, while all tracks are entered in the database and can be played, not all of the metadata about the music (id3 tags) is stored in the database following a scan.

Server:
- Lenovo server running
- Twonkymedia 4.4.4i
- OS Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
- Wired network

Client
- Dell XPS M1330
- OS Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
- Wireless network
- access using Firefox + webbrowse
- access using Rhythmbox 0.11.5 + python-coherence Upnp

Music Library
- all FLAC except one album (ogg vorbis)

Statistics from TwonkyMedia
- tracks - 1322
- genres - 8 + all + unknown (missing are Folk, Folk/Rock, Opera and Urban)
- artists - 49 + all + unknown
- albums - 35 + all + unknown
- folders 55 + all

If I use rhythmbox on the server directly browsing the same directory (/home/music), I get the following statistics which I believe to be correct.

Statistics from Rhythmbox against /home/music
- tracks - 1322
- genres - 12
- artists - 272
- albums - 98
- folders - 55

As you can see, the number of tracks and folders match. The discrepancy is in genres, artists and albums which data is largely extracted from the id3 tags in the FLAC or OGG files and stored as Unknown.

Note: Except for two albums which are Linn Studio Master Downloads, and one the Nine Inch Nails download converted from WAV to FLAC, all others were ripped using SoundJuicer to FLAC and had any errors in the id3 tags modified by EasyTag.

Any idea why not all the album information is being extracted and added to the database? I cannot see any difference in the files to account for this. I have done at least one database rebuild.

I am running TVersity on an WIn XP computer, but I want to switch to Twonky on a QNAP storage server, as soon as I have resolved the metadata issues with my FLAC music library.

Soon to come; Linn DS player

I have the exact same issue and also I plan to purchase a linn DS player. I have also contacted Linn about the problem but have not received a reply yet.

I have a FLAC music library on a Win XP server running twonky.

Would appreciate any input?
