Potential user: Can Twonky stream from VOB/IFO or ISO?

Post by ITemplate » Sat Mar 12, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi,

Considering Twonky for my WHS/PS3 setup. I have several videos that I want to put on disc - and I'm all new to all this. I have just tried to put a video to disc using DVD Shrink. The outcome is a bunch of VOB files and some others too (IFO etc). The thing is, I want the full experience with Menu system and scenes skipping etc. Just playing single VOB files with no scene information is not what I want. I want the same experience as if I inserted the DVD into the PS3 slot.

Then I could also save the DVD's as ISO but can Twonky stream those? And can you recommend a good software for creating VOB or ISO that plays well with Twonky?

As far as streaming media from .ISO container (DVD,BD,etc.), At presesent
I do not know of any server or client device that will do this through DLNA streaming
However this feat is done when the client has the ability to understand the .ISO as a format
So say you had a client that could do this, there is no DLNA server software to stream it
So the people that do this, are connecting up a a file share on the server
and thus using SMB or File shareing protocols to access the .ISO media
and you are still limited to what the client can do, in regards to the Menu System of the .ISO media

So is there a middle ground, sort of...

You could rip your media into a file/folder format that one would see on the physical media
and place that into a folder that is the name of the movie
So for DVD there would be VOB files somewhere in there
and for BR there would be M2Ts files somewhere in there
These files can be streamed via DLNA
But no, your not going to get the ability to do menu stuff
You would then be at the mercy of the client's ability to
be able to know that if it sees a bunch of VOB files
that when starting file 1 to continue playing to file 2, etc, etc.
The PS3 can do this, with the continue setting
other clients not so sure

Good Luck man, as the idea of what you want, is what we all want
and it isnt happening anywhere anytime sooon

No Problem

The clients that I know of that do for the most part work with .ISO via SMB file shares
are the Popcorn Hour series, WD TV Live series, and there are more on the market now
as the media streamer (the clients) market has gotten rather larger these days

the only other tactic I can think of that blends the idea of .ISO usage and streaming VOB or M2TS is this
there is this program,, the name totally eludes me at the moment
but what it does it this, it allows one to mount and .ISO as a folder
like what Virtual CD does, but different, it maps it to a folder
so say you had you .ISO files in a folder used just to store them
you could then use this program to say do this mount movie1.iso -> d:\shares\videos\movie1
then whatever DLNA server is set to scan d:\shares\video "in theory" and see the contents of the folder movie1 as files

I say "in theory" because in essence this is a symbolic link or junction, and currenlty in Twonky
it can "only follow links in linux", so this idea wont currently work in the other flavors of it

but in the end even if you could do this, your back to what the clients can do with it, via DLNA streaming

What we need are new features of the DLNA spec to be implimented to do this,
If that is even going to happen, who knows
But I do know that DLNA 2.0 is in the works, but I dont know what it is going to address or add
