TwonkyServer 6.0.39 with 2 NICs on WHS 2011 fails

Hi,
I'm using TwonkyServer 6.0.39 on a Windows Home Server 2011. There are three Terratec NOXON Internet Radios connected via WLAN in my home network. Twonky works fine but as soon as the second NIC is activated Twonky disappears from the network.
My network configuration:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/25 ... ion08.jpg/
Twonky shows the following network connections:
192.168.1.1
192.168.2.2
127.0.0.1
1.) I tried to modify twonkymediaserver.ini.
ip=192.168.1.1
2.) I tried to modify twonkymediaserver.ini.
ignoreip=192.168.2.2,127.0.0.1
3.) I tried to modify twonkymediaserver.ini.
httpport=9051
4.) I tried to modify twonkymediaserver.ini.
disablelocalssdp=1
5.) I tried to swap IP addresses of NICs.
6.) I tried to replace WLAN by LAN.
7.) I tried Wild Media Center which works ok with two NICs.
It seems that such configuration confuses the function of UPnP. I can activate another TwonkyServer running on a QNAP NAS which works fine im my network even if Twonky on WHS fails.
Can somebody please help?
Regards,
Klaus F

I cant say why a different product is working in your scenario
But,
since your WHS is "wanting" to act as a router for the x.x.2.1 and x.x1.1 networks
I could be mistaken, but there was a lot fo talk about that on a few of the whs forums out there
and that in some ways if on whs v1 even though its win2003, it can and cant do what you want correctly
not saying it isnt working for you its just what I went and looked up
also, there was very similiar talk about that for whs v2 win 2008 version
It begs the question, is there a compelling reason your network is setup like that
I too run WHS, single nic
Also,
Have you tried version 6.0.38
There were a bunch of changes in 6.0.39, I rolled back to 6.0.38
Due to a bug regression with coverart, there may be more bugs

Also
I could be wrong about this
But If Im not mistaken the x,x,1,1 nic on the whs
should not have a gateway assigned to it
as whs is acting as a router, and x.x.1.1 is the gateway for that network
and since its acting as a router, would route appropriate traffic to the x.x.2.1 network
by you using a gateway, it is possible that it is being forced to send all packets to the x.x.2.1 network
and then reroute them back to the x.x.1.1 network is possible
which also depends on the firewall rules
Also,
for ex:
take a linksys router
the wan side has an ip, sm, and gw
but the lan side has only an ip, sm, but no gateway as it is the gateway
just a thought

Here is a MS doc talking about what I just mentioned
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837453
Youll notice in there example, they to do not use a gateway on the lan side
just an ip and sm
DSL network adapter
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
LAN network adapter
IP address: 192.168.168.249
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Note:
I once set up 2003 as a router a while back, and used to connect 2 networks
that had two routers
and that case I did have to use a gateway on each nic, but that is not the scenario you are in
but I did have to add routes on the routers for each opposing network to point to the windows router
Code: Select all
internet
^ ^
| |
v v
router 1 router 2
^ ^
| |
v v
network 1 <-> windows router <-> network 2

Hi,
Thanks for your efford to help me.
My motivation behind such installation is less the typical home server storage features but more the internet gateway and router function. There is a OpenVPN client running connecting to a anonymisation service which gives internet IP anonymity for all clients in my home network. In the past I used a Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT firmware running for this purpose but since I have upgraded to 32MBit/s internet speed I had to replace the router by PC hardware for better performance.
1.) I tried your suggestion to remove GW of the LAN NIC. Your explanation sounds logic to me but unfortunately doesn't change the situation.
2.) I tried 6.0.38 and some older versions as well. I found out that the "ignoreip option" is not available in 6.0.38. No improvement.
3.) I tried to disable the firewall. No improvement.
The situation is weird. After new installation I sometimes can see Twonky on my NOXONs but disappears soon if not streaming. Sometimes I can get Twonky back by re-starting the NOXONs or Twonky. Even after trying for months I haven't found the logic behind when it is working and when not.
Does a logfile help?

I I had to guess whats going on
I wouldbet that it has to to do with multicast broadcasts
There have been some scenarios with different routers, a dlink comes to mind
where if one did not specifically enable multicast
twonky was not seen
which makes total sense
as twonky or other services need to spit packets out onto the network
that vpn thing you got going, I'll bet you that it is the culprit
there has to be some sort of enable multicast blocking going on
but then again, that doesnt explain why another dlan streaming product was/is working
I know a log may help, I hope =)

Hi,
I now have removed the GW from the LAN side. So this is my actual configuration:
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3865 ... tion28.jpg
I assume the Netgear switch is not the problem because:
a) In case I disable the NIC X.X.2.2 Twonky works fine.
b) The TwonkyServer running on my QNAP NAS works fine in the same network.
I assume the WLAN is no the problem. The NOXONs have both WLAN and LAN but the behaviour doesn't change when connecting via LAN instead of WLAN.
After more checking it is very clear now:
1.) Disabled RRAS and NAT
2.) Disabled the virtual OpenVPN NIC (TAP-Win32 Adapter V9)
3.) Disabled NIC (X.X.2.2, WAN side)
4.) Twonky works fine !
5.) Enabled NIC (X.X.2.2, WAN side)
6.) Twonky dissapears !
in summary: Typically 30 seconds after I activate the second NIC (X.X.2.2) the Twonky dissapears. Having the virtual OpenVPN NIC activated doesn't seem to be a problem.
I found out that Serviio Media Server is not working either and has the same behaviour while the test installation of Wild Media Server still works fine.
I made a log but don't know how to add here?

Klaus F

@RAYX9500
What version of server and twonky are you using?

May be related, or not
But I was re-imageing my nephews win 7 pc, doing all the upadates and what not
Two things went kaplooey, for what ever reason...
1. after updateing starcraft 2, it would not go online correctly
which forced me to muck with the windows firewall...
got it working
2. post doing that, intermitently the network icon showed no internet connection
but access from all apps and windows worked
I then deleted ALL entries from windows firewall
and then chose reset to defatuls
and all was good again
In a nutshell
from a GUI perspective the firewall looked fine,
but it wasnt, so doing what I did to fix it, fixed it for real
My point is I wonder it the firewall on the WHS is kaplooey, with all the changes that have happened
Due to others with dual nics not having any issues
It might be worth a shot to reset it and see what happens

Hi,
"I then deleted ALL entries from windows firewall and then chose reset to defatuls and all was good again"
Thanks for your thoughts. I tried this but unfortunately there isn't such happy end of my story. Maybe I try WHS 2003 over the weekend. Just a try.

Sorry to hear that
Yeah, its hard to say what is the root cause of the problem
But, tyring things on different os version, can//might help to see where the issue might be lurking
Good Luck

I wonder if the VPN Server stuff is having a problem with the UDP ports
HEre are the ports that Twonky Server uses, as far as I know of
UDP ports 1030, 1900, 9080
TCP ports 9000

Hi,
It took a while to make a fresh WHS 2003 installation. I had to purchase another network card to replace the onboard NIC. Unfortunately there is no WHS 2003 driver available for my onboard NIC. So now I'm using two external network cards and Twonky works fine in this configuration. This is really good news for me. I've never been that far.
Next step will be to go back to a fresh WHS 2011 installation with such configuration and check again.

Klaus F
