Added some example code on how to fix time display not showing for video

Also, added some example code on how to make the music album thumbnails larger
so that the size is more uniform with the other media types
and so that you can actually see the album cover, etc

version 7.0.7 introduced 3 new container types

<container name='music_online' id='music/online' createClass='object.item.audioItem.online1.musicTrack' class='object.container' />

<container name='picture_online' id='picture/online' createClass='object.item.imageItem.online1.photo' class='object.container' />

<container name='video_online' id='video/online' createClass='object.item.videoItem.online1.movie' class='object.container' />

The 7.0.5 examples do work with 7.0.7,
but they do not have those containers in them
I am going to wait until the next version to add any more changes
as enough is changing as it is already

Hi,
Could you help me out with Custom navtrees?

I have quite a few series and movies on my library and would like it to work something like this.

Folder structure:
Videos
--> Movies
--> Movie1
--> movie1.avi
--> Movie2
--> movie2.mpg
--> Series
--> Serie1
--> Season 1
--> episode1.mpg
--> episode2.mpg
-->Serie 2

Navtree:
--> Movies
--> Alphanumeric list (ABC, DEF...)
--> Movie1
--> movie1.avi
--> Movie2
--> movie2.mpg
--> Series
--> Alphanumeric list (ABC, DEF...)
--> Serie1
--> Season 1
--> episode1.mpg
--> episode2.mpg
--> Serie 2

At first glance it seem's achievable, but the buildon='res' which is used for the folder tree's
has a quirk that is a plus and a minus
it will always show things for each level, which is the plus
the minus is when you dont want to do this
kind of hard to explain without some examples
i'll play around with it in a little while and post back what we can get away with

Re: Navtree 7 (How to show folders at the root solved and mo

Post by chessdragon136 » Sat Jul 28, 2012 9:14 pm

Hi,

Have finally had the time to read through all this, but sadly I don't think I've found what I'm looking for.. I've tried tinkering myself but I don't think I have the understanding required (I soo don't know what I'm doing!!)

In my twonky settings, I have various folders set up over various hard-drives...

eg. c:\TV -- c:\comedy -- c:\documentaries -- c:\films

What I would like is the folders at root view, which showed each of the seperate places in it's own folder..
Currently, if you have multiple places set up in twonky and go to folder view, it collects them all in the same view, so I get the following:

24, Have I Got News for You, James Bond - Goldeneye.....

So it collects the contents of each location and displays them all together, rather than showing folders for each of the locations (TV, Comedy, Documentaries,Films)

When my collection is a few hundred films, various documentaries and tv shows and the such merged into one view it is a problem...

Currently the only way I can think of solving it is to create a folder, then create a series of symbolic links to point to each location, then point twonky to that one folder... Not Nice, and sort of repeats my Windows 7 Library (Wish we could add the library as 1 location!)

Any help appreciated.

If you had the following

C:\Movies
C:\Series
C:\Television

and then in sharing you added them as 3 entries
yup you would see the sub contents of each of them
but not the parent folder, this is a good feature
except when one wants the parent folder

Then one would either do this, ad only add the share c:\video

C:\Video\Movies
C:\Video\Series
C:\Video\Television

Or This

In version 7.x they introduced the ability to do that
Set the following to 1 in the twonkyserver.ini

Code: Select all

# set to 1 to include the folder name of the shares in the 'By Folder' navigation
includefolder=1
Then use the following view files
Restart the server
and you should get the results you are looking for
Attachments
advanced.view.xml
(936Bytes)Downloaded 693 times
view-definitions.xml
(14.15KiB)Downloaded 668 times

It's typical that it is that simple.. Been using twonky since v5 (on a MyBookLive) and had got soo used to having to "fix" odd bits myself via views and client xmls it didn't even occur to me that they would introduce a setting (annoying as i did read through the readme's)

My example was really bad as they are not all on the same partition, or hard drive, hence the "fix" of using symbolic links, but this has made my day. Thank you! (And your a lot faster than the community site - you should be hired)

As a side note, the view files you provided me worked but broke the status count of my files (just showed 0 for all of them).. however, using the files I had been using (the mylibrary videos at root example you posted here) fixed that.

Now just to try transcoding my mkv's to extract embedded subtitles so they play on my samsung and I'll be happy. No idea on how to do that (ideally with mkvextract from mkvtoolnix if I can get twonky to use it!)

Thanks again!

Thanks and Your welcome
fyi - symbolic links dont work on windows version (go figure)

Will have to go look at the status count issue you saw
But good to hear my original example worked as intended

I cant remember off the top of my head, but twonky subtitle support is limited
to specific containers, and the names have to match
I dont think mkv is one of them, could be wrong about that

I had it working earlier as a test - windows has mklink and with the /j (Directory Junction (Hard Link)) parameter it worked just fine with twonky..

Well that's the problem, extracted from the mkv the subtitles work, but embedded they don't, so the "plan" was to transcode the subs out externally before playback (problem is that's technically not transcoding as it needs to be done before.. perhaps a plugin)

well what do you know, I guess they do work now
I had played with that a long time ago, never got it to work
Remember, someone always knows something you dont
You stated earlier you didnt know what you were doing,
no one does were all just button mashers, who want to watch movies =)

I went down a similiar path for an idea I had for transcoding, which could be called transmuxing
the attempt was to use ffmpeg -i source -vcopy - acopy output
for files that didnt actually need to be transcoded, but were just in the wrong container
that same idea is kind what is needed here for the subtitles
basically somehow invoke it to extract the subs, and then start playback

One possible way to do this outside of twonky
would be to create a scheduled task that ran a script once a day,
or was triggered off of a file creation event in the media folders
and have it do the dirty work for you

FYI
I found out why the media count was 0
It looks like twonky is using the count from the container id='video/all'
the example I gave you was a new method I was testing for simplicty
but since it has no name, which means unreachable, it got a count of 0
my original method moved the containers out of the video container
but they still kept a name, thus were reachable, and we had true count
go figure...

Exactly.. Sadly many of my mkv's have a variety of different subtitle formats which complicated things to near impossible. I have mks, srt, aas at least. And ffmpeg has reported issues with doing it. MKVtoolnix is the best command line to use, but not sure I can get twonky to use it??
(I tried creating a mkvextract.location file, pointing it there, then creating a mkvextract-mkv.desc with the exec line) but nothing (and I saw nothing in the twonky logs either, not sure if it would even show up there at all...))

True, but I like having subs encoded in the files for playback on my pc (which is the server).. Having 2x the files (even if I can hide them) spoils the point really. Maybe i'm too idealistic...

About the only most complete solution is to use a device that does a lot (wd live or similiar)
and to connect to a file share
gets rid of the dlna middle man from a perspective

Luckily I now know why and what to do to fix it =)

I have a question regarding the Navtree v7. Does it "control" the default sort field? Right now it sorts every directory by Title. which is fine. But I want one of my directory to be sorted by Date. Is that possible or that is all on the client side? (even though my Samsung Smart TV can't change sorting order).

My Tree shows up like this currently

3D
Animations
Chinese
Concerts
Movies
New Releases
TV

I like to be able to sort "New Releases" by Date instead of Title --- Possible?

I assume the tree you showed is a folder view?
if they are all folders then its an all or nothing deal either all title sort or all year sort
at present we cant apply exceptions like that

Also
Is the New Releases also a folder?

The reason I ask is I use a playlist called "New Releases"
in which I hard code the movies as I add them
long story short,
i use a windows home server, and it moves things around, twonky thinks there there new
when it does that, so I had to hard code a list for the kids

I think I have an idea for you, what does your view-definitions.xml for <container name='videos' look like
is it modified?

I've been quite preoccupied this summer and just today remembered this. Thanks for trying anyways.

Basically all i would need/want is the same sort of alphanumeric listing that already exists with music, but with videos. Currently I have resolved this by actually dividing things to subfolders named ABC, DEF, etc. but that's not very convenient, especially with the library getting bigger by the week...

I dont see buildon='res' behavior changing in the foreseable future

what exactly are you looking for the root of the video container to do/look like?

I hope the root to be as simple as possible, showing me my video library as it is in the folder structure, but divided by an alphanumeric list. I have added the folder C:\Videos in twonky, and that folder contains subfolders Movies and Series, and i'd like each of them to be divided by an alphanumeric list.

So for me the best possible and most simplest solution would be if the root could simply just have the "By Folders" options, or better yet, if it would just present me with the folders "Movies" and "Series". Once opened, they would have the mentioned alphanumeric list dividing the hundreds of movies and series.

Do the folders C:\Videos\Movies and C:\Videos\Series also contain subfolders?
is the media just being added to those two folders accordingly without any further sub folder creation?

the main problem is this, buildon='res' will build a tree structure
that will "always" include files in the return, as you walk down the tree
this is normal expected behavior, kind of like windows explorer point of view

yes it would be possible to add alpha grouping
but omitting the list of files in the folders would not be possible, as the tree is navigated

Yes, they have subfolders. Each Movie has it's own subfolder containing the videofile and possibly subtitles, Series each have their own subfolder containing seasonal subfolders that have the videofiles inside them.

I hope this thread can still be used, even if it was hacked...

I am useing the Twonkyserver 7.2.8 on my Qnap Turbo-NAS TS-219P+ installed as a ready-to-use QPKG package. So far everythings fine, don't care about the hardware the way to install it.

But I would like to modify the media structure. I have a media library on my NAS for pictures, movies, home videos, music and music videos. This is basically organized through iTunes and iPhoto, that means all movies are in just one folder (/shares/movies/files), the pictures and home videos are separated in different folders by albums in a different parent folder (/shares/photos/album/files) and the music files as well as the music videos are in a more complex structure (/shares/music/artist name/album/files incl. music videos). Due to the other programs accessing the medias, I would like to keept this structure.

If I configure the server in the standard way, as content "video and photos" in /shares/photos and "video and music" in /shares/music, I get all sort of videos mixed up under video (music videos, home videos and movies).
But I would like to have them separated by means different categories like music videos, home videos and movies beside the existing categories music and photo.

How do I have to modify the files to achieve this?
Do I have to define additional containers in view-definitions.xml? If yes, how to do that?

Thanks for your support.
