Hi all,
I have Twonky Server v7.0.9 running in a NAS device (a My Book Live network drive).
External subtitles are streamed correctly for most of video formats, and MKV containers with subtitles 'contained' are shown also correctly. But MKV files with an external .srt subtitle file (with the same name) is not streamed.
I stream to a DLNA-certified device, which shows subtitles for the first two cases, but not external subtitles for MKV. However if I copy the mkv and srt files to a USB device, then the subtitles are shown. I guess then the problem is on Twonky Server side.
Is this a known issue? maybe even solved in the more recent versions?
EDIT: I have just checked they don't work for MP4 files either. At least for me, could anyone else check it?
Thanks!

As I added in the previous message, I have just checked that subtitles are not shown for MP4 files either. Could anyone else check it, please?

I know that you are not alone with subtitle issues
On the community site there a bunch of threads on the topic

Re: Not streaming external subtitles for MKV or MP4
I'm successful using DVD Fab to rip to Mp4 and add forced subtitles with burn-in if playing on my PS3.
However, my Dish Hopper media player seems to bomb out on MP4s most of the time. Does anyone know of a profile to use that will enable Hopper work more reliably with MP4?
Hopper I can't seem to make work well with MP4 conversions from either DVD Fab or Handbrake.

Re: Not streaming external subtitles for MKV or MP4
This google showed a lot of issues with dlna and the hopper
https://www.google.com/search?q=Dish+Ho ... ss&ie=&oe=
in this one, he solved the issue by having an mp4 with no chapters muxed in
https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/ ... stops-mp4/
The Hopper like the other boxes from directv, cable, etc
all really suck at dlna right now, what a shame

Re: Not streaming external subtitles for MKV or MP4
Thanks, it turns out this along with a couple other details got me in good shape.
I'm not sure all of these were required to get it working, but I know VBR was causing stuttering and I confirmed the chapter markers were messing things up.
Video:
H.264
Constant Framerate
Constant Quality 20
Audio:
Single stream AAC Dolby prologic 160 bitrate (removed second passthrough stream)
Subtitle:
English, Forced Only, Burn In
Create Chapter Markers disabled

Re: Not streaming external subtitles for MKV or MP4
glad to see you made progress
some people look at h264 and try to achieve the highest quality with the highest compression
using all the bells and whistles available in the encoder
I took a different approach a long time ago
I aimed for the greatest device compatibility with the highest quality
using the same as you did above, with no other features enabled
file sizes are a little bigger, not much though
but it allows for my encodes to work on a lot of clients without issue
the only thing I do have in my files are the chapters, but I haven't run into an issue yet
but I now know they can cause issue with the hopper
