Very slow streaming to Sony Bravia

Post by MickyO » Wed Jun 04, 2014 10:08 am

I have Twonky 5.1.9 which came pre-installed on a WD MyBook Live 2TB. I use it as a media server wirelessly to my Sony Bravia 46HX820 and it has always streamed with no issues. Recently, the streaming has become so slow that movies take minutes to load and will stop streaming to catch up every minute or so. There is just over 1GB of music, photos and videos on the NAS and the only thing that has changed recently is that Powerline adapters have been installed for Foxtel Pay TV.

Occasionally the TV will come up with the error "Cannot access the server. Please check the server settings" when trying to stream. Never has this happened before.
I have unplugged the Powerline adapters and the streaming remains the same.
I have reset the Twonky server and streaming remains the same.

The only other thing attached to the network is a wireless printer.

Any ideas?

I have seen a few times where the Powerline adapters are the culprit
when that are used to network the client and or nas

when you say you unplugged the Powerline adapters
what devices were plugged into them?

how is the tv connected to the network?
how is the wd connected to the network?

also
do have a network layout of how things connect up
as are you sure you didn't create a network loop
one way to check this, is if nothing is using the network or the internet
are all the lights, I mean all, blinking like a ton of things are happening on all ports?
a network loop would make a network come to a crawl

Foxtel PayTV is plugged into the Powerline Adapters and my understanding is that it only connects to the internet at the direction of the user to download programs.

WD is connected via ethernet to router and then router is connected wirelessly to TV.

When there is nothing connected to the network there are no lights flashing on the router or WD.

I performed a router restart and got some improvement.

Thanks

If at all possible, I would try to connect the tv with a wired connection
If only to test to see if the wifi is causing an issue

wifi is ok for SD material
but wifi for HD even on 5ghz 8011ac it can still hiccup

your welcome

I keep a 50ft network cable for doing all kinds of tests when needed
or for when I need to make a long run for a lan party

when it comes to wifi, the other issue could be interference from other routers
I usually use "inssider" from "metageek" to get an idea of channels that coexist or that overlap
and adjust wifi channels to get the least interferference, as its not always possible
to get a clear channel these days with so much wifi in the air
