Twonky and IPv6?

Post by jpedrot » Tue Jun 10, 2014 11:49 am

I got Twonky running on my NAS, which is dual-stacked IPv4 and IPv6.
When accessing the NAS over IPv6 everything except Twonky seems to work fine.
Does Twonky support IPv6?

Im not sure if it does or does not, but I too am curious
If I dig up anything on this, I will pass it along

does going to the web interface using an ipv6 address work?
if your router has the option, have you tried enabling IPv6 Multi-cast?

If I use http://[ipv6_address]:9000 there is no response, but http://ipv4_address:9000 works. So the server is running, it just seems its not answering on IPv6.

For multicasts etc things should be properly configured, since other services work just fine, ie standard nas web page and ftp server etc. It is just twonky server that does not seem to work on IPv6.

If the web interface is not responding on the IPv6 Interface
odds are that either the NAS builds don't have support for it yet, or Twonky Server doesn't support it

in IPv4 multicast is an important part of UPNP and DLNA for SSDP broadcasts
on some NAS devices one would have to add a route for it to get wonky working
for example: route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0

Since IPv6 uses purely multicast and not broadcast (to my knowledge)
I would suspect that the IPv6 multicast route would have to be added in certain scenarios

IPv6 Multicast Address Space Registry

Thanks for answering.

My NAS support it, because all other services on the NAS works fine with IPv6 access :)

I am not using the DLNA/UPnP for these tests, its just a browser trying to connect to Twonky web ui running on my NAS.
Which makes me assume all multicast settings in my network should be just fine, since as you mention IPv6 needs multicast to just work. And all other IPv6 based services are working currently.

So I am also thinking that its just Twonky that does not support IPv6 or has it on by default, but I have not found any settings in the web ui for Twonky that enables me to turn it on :)

Thats why I came here to see if somebody had any experience with it.

Not really a solution, but I managed to solve it by using Plex instead Twonky.
Plex has been somewhat unstable for me, but since IPv6 support is must for me, then Plex it is.
An unstable service vs no service, is a no brainer ;)

I too dabbled with plex in the past, and yeah its too unstable and a resource hog with too many dependencies for me
but my motto is go with what works for you and fits your needs

one of the people I converse with at twonky is on vacation
so hopefully I'll get an answer next week to whats up with the ipv6 support

Thanks, looking forward to hearing what plans Twonky have for IPv6.
