VLC media player sees duplicate Twonky Server vidoes

Post by SuffolkPunch » Thu Oct 15, 2015 1:37 pm

Hi,

New here. Hope someone can help with the following issue?

My system:
1. Twonky media server v 8.1.2 installed on a Windows 7 box
2. VLC media player v 2.1.6 (Rincewind) running on a Linux mint 17.2 Rafaela 64-bit box.
3. Twonky media server v 5.1.6 running on a Humax FoxSat HDR box.

All 3 boxes are on my wired home lan.

The issue: VLC sees each video offered by TMS v8.1.2 on the Win 7 box *twice* - see attached png screenshot. The 'Sky at night' folder actually contains 3 videos:
Sky at night.mkv
Sky at night.ts
Sky at night -1 .mkv
All 3 videos stream correctly to the VLC player (audio streams can be changed, subtitles can be displayed or not).

No such double vision affects what VLC sees on the Humax box: it just sees each video listed once (as it should).

Why the double vision from Twonky server running on the win 7 box?

Twonky Server 8.1.2 has lots of changes compared to 5.1.6. These were made to improve compatibility with different clients and to add some features like support for subtitles. Additionally to the path of the video file on the server the newer version provides a resource for the thumbnail and if available also for an external subtitle file.

It looks like VLC cannot handle multiple resources for an elements very well.

In Twonky Server 5.1.x the server only provided one resource element that contains the path to shared media file on the server. Therefore it's working with your Humax device.

Thanks - most useful!

Can Twonky Server 8.1.2 be configured to suppress displaying the thumbnail resource?

Failing that, is there a DLNA client (in linux) which can correctly handle multiple resources for an element?

Update: Have installed 'kodi' which seems to handle multiple resources ok. So problem solved - although it does seem rather a sledgehammer to crack a nut!

In case it helps someone else, I installed kodi on Linux Mint 17.2 ("Rafaela" 64-bit) by opening a terminal and executing the commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/xbmc-nightly
sudo add-get update
sudo add-get install kodi

{This should have been displayed as code, but BBCode is off for me despite being 'on' by default in my account settings!?]

I am still interested in a more light-weight solution if anyone knows of one.
