TV Server with XP and two networks

Post by urza777_9 » Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:14 pm

I have difficulties to get my DSM320 and TV running when I use a wireless network beside another wired network. TV runs on a Windows XP-Pro machine. I have two networks

1. Wired Ethernet 192.168.1.0, XP machine 192.168.1.40 (DHCP), DSM320 192.168.1.39 (DHCP), Gateway 192.168.1.1 (DHCP, a Debian server).

This is the basic Internet network. In this network the client works fine, I can replay MPGs, I can "ping" the client from the XP machine. But I want to connect the client without wires, so this is not a solution for me. Also I don't want to add a wireless interface to the debian machine. Not yet.

2. Wireless 192.168.3.1, XP machine 192.168.3.1 (fixed), DSM320 192.168.3.2 (fixed), Gateway 192.168.3.1 (fixed).

The wireless network is a ADHOC network based on a PCI wireless card in the XP machine. The physical connection seems to be ok, both XP and DSM320 can find each other and detect the SSID. The XP Wireless Network Status says that everything is ok (connection established), signal strengh is fine. Dozens of packet sent - but zero received. But I cannot get TCP/IP working, I cannot "ping" the DSM320. Of course for the same reason the client cannot find a Server.

I guess I have to add or deleted some routes or whatever. Does anybody has some ideas what else I can try - it should be possible to get such a connection running without buying a dedicated wireless router, doesn't it?

As far as I know, ALL media players will not work with an ad-hoc wireless network such as this one.

I think you'll need to at least buy a wireless access point.
