Transode to PS3

Post by nandelbosc » Fri Oct 05, 2007 5:47 pm

Hi!

I'm a linux (gentoo) user with (at the moment) twonky trial version.

How can I (if it's possible) setup twonky for transcode xvid files into my PS3?

Thank's!

Hi,

Do you want to transcode them in realtime or in batches?

Batches is when you take a big pile of files, and transcode them in basically one go. Would mean going away from xVid files and only keep something like MPEG2 or MPEG4.

I personally took my video collection and made it into AVC+AAC MPEG4 files with proper tags, and have that served to my PS3.
If H264 (AVC aka MPEG4 part 10) is too CPU intensive or too modern for your liking (if it has to play on slower PCs or non-compatible media-players), you can transcode to higher-bitrate MPEG4-SP or MPEG2, but then they will also take up more space on your storage media...

(overly simplified)
So, live/realtime transcode is good if you want to keep the xVids in their current format+size.
Batch transcoding is good if you know that you will watch the files more than once or if the machine running Twonky is slow.
Batch is bad if you need files in original formal, if other players cannot play the target format and alternative formats are worse than xVid or if you do not want to invest the time in doing the transcode yourself.

hmm.. think this should instead be a long article :) The above is way to uninformative.

Cheers,
/G
