Large jpg issues with PS3

Post by AddSound » Wed Mar 05, 2008 4:42 am

I have a PS3 that I use to view jpgs. I have recently purchased a Sony A700 and the jpgs produced by the A700 can not be viewed through the PS3. This is unusual as all other jpgs from other cameras (including an 8MB Sony) can be viewed. The PS3 message (I assume from Twonky) is that the format is not supported. The Sony A700 jpg format is 12MP at 4272 x 2400.

Is there an issue with displaying jpgs at 4272 x 2400 on PS3 using Twonky? Or is it the Ps3? I am using the latest version 4.4.4. on a Dlink DNS-323 via a wired connection through a Dlink router.

I also have issues with album art on the PS3….but I am in no hurry for this as it is a nice to have feature for me and you already know about these issues :D I suspect that it may be an issue with the Twonky and the PS3 2.10 firmware :?:

Have confirmed it is an issue with Twonky as I can stream the files to the PS3 via Windows Media Centre. This appears to be a MAJOR bug!

Right....I have avoided all the Twonky bashing here as I believe that Twonky is a good server. Not great....good. HOWEVER!!!! Enough is enough. Here is the official response from Twonky support on this issue.

Hi,

propably these pictures are to large and need be rescaled.
However scaling is not an option for the D-link device as it does not have the CPU power to do this.
You can only pre-scale the pictures on a PC.

Sorry

What a load of...IT is obvious the support at TWonky have no clue. If the Dlink, PS3, and Microsoft Media server work what the heck has the Dlink got to do with it if I use Twonky! Given that the Dlink can handle ALL other sizes...it is obviously just an issue with the Twonky scaler!

I have asked for a full refund as Twonky advertises that it handles Jpgs. Not just some of them!!!!!

Hi,

if I understand you right, you have problem with JPEG that are from a 12MP camera, right?
But JPEG from a 8MP camera work just fine, right, too?

So, like it or not, the TV support might be right:
While 8MP JPEG are still within the D-Link's capabilities to re-scale a 12MP JPEG is just too big to do so...

There have been more posting about limitations of NAS devices in sense of memory shortage and low "cpu" power. I don't know if this is a TV specific issue or if these devices are too weak in general to handle certain multimedia sizes/contents.

Nevertheless, why not trying to install TV on your Windows PC and see if your PS3 can display 12MP JPEGs from there. If so, support's right. If not, support's crap...

Hello all,

It's very unreal the support reply. More people will have a digital camera with large jpeg.

I hope, the support twonky find a good solution

I had the same problem. The preview is good on my ps3 but the full display is bad...

Let me make this clear.

The error I receive when viewing a 12Mp jpeg via the PS3 streamed from a Twonky server is "This data type is not supported". When I stream the same 12Mp jpeg via Microsoft Media Center it displays as expected. The error is streamed from the Twonky database as a result of a problem with the SIZE of the jpeg....not any scaling issue. I suspect that the Twonky database has limitations on the expected jpeg image size and there are some hard coded limits rather than dynamic size requirements.

It is not a problem with the Dlink NAS as the Dlink NAS is powerful enough, and has enough memory, to handle a 12Mp file - and freater. Given the PS3 can handle, and more than likely does the scaling when used with the PS3 as Twonky should only be streaming the file, this is most definately a problem with the Twonky database structure and its inherit error handling of jpeg files. This means one thing...ALL jpegs ARE NOT handled by Twonky.

Twonky replied "Hi,
this is not a bug on the server side but a player issue. We will lookup your account for a refund.
Thanks
The TwonkyMedia Team"

Again....the reply from Twonky does not address the issue or show any understanding of what is going on. Hence...I am packing up the wagon and heading out of the Twonky camp. When you pay for a product you expect some competent level of support. I don't mind bugs....but when you take the time to notify them and they refuse to acknowledge it....you got to quit while your ahead :)

Hello,
I made a new test. On my network hard drive (hp mediavault), i had a hpmediaserver (slow) and twonkyserver.

When i display with hpmediaserver a large jpeg --> no problem good quality / with twonky --> bad image

So it's a twonky problem

Have a good day

Agreed. A Twonky bug....I am getting a full refund so I will now look else where for my media server for the Dlink DNS-323.

I have the same problem.

I am running a registered TwonkyVision 4.4.4 on a WinXP system.
My PS3 (2.1x and 2.2 firmware) can't display JPEG files with a resolution larger than about 3k pixels streamed by Twonky. I switched scaling on and off on the server.

I installed TVersity on the same setup to see if this was a PS3 related problem. But with TVersity, my PS3 can display these JPEGs without any problems! But the scanning und updating of my media database is way too slow with TVersity so I would rather want to keep Twonky running.

I hope that this bug will be fixed soon, because I really love the TwonkyVision software...

My pics are mostly from my 6 MP (3008 x 2000) Nikon DSLR and they work great. I dont have a 12 MP camera, so I took a couple of images and resized them up using Photoshop to test this. I sized them up to 4272 x 2840 and they worked perfectly. This is with Twonky 4.4.4 on Linux with a PS3 2.20. Any other details about the pics? Have you tried a resize to see if it makes a difference?

Some examples are 4368x2912 or 2848x4288 or 2912x4368 or 6000x4nnn or 5000x3320, all with 96x96dpi and 24bit.

I sorted the pictures by resolution and above some magic number they are not displayed anymore. PS3 reports "incompatible data".

But there is an exception: I found some pictures with 3333x5000 resolution and they were displayed properly...

I did not resize the files, but I suspect they will work when the shorter side of the image has less than about 2700 pixels. Maybe this effect only apperas on WinXP servers?

Haven't anyone found a solution for this 'big pictures rescale' problem?

I've a new Sony Alpha 350 and its 14,2 megapixel images aren't displayed on my PS3. While, instead, no problem whatsoever in displaying my old Canon S3IS 6 megapixel ones.
Seems the PS3 has problems in managing images larger than 12mp? Or its a Twonky metadata/db problem?

As TwonkyServer I'm using a Thecus NAS N5200BR Pro (linux inside).

Many thanks

This sucks. I just bought a Canon EOS450D and tried to view the 12MP-Photos stored on my SynologyDS106 NAS. First I had Twonky's rescale function on and noticed that -other than my earlier 4MP photos - the images were blurry and completely unacceptable. I guess I was just viewing thumbnails, so I switched rescaling off and now the PS3 says the data are incompatible. Both is definitely a TwonkyMedia issue since the PS3 would accept the files and show the in perfect quality when streamed from my PC with Nero.

Just wanted to mention: same symptoms an a Netgear ReadynAS with TM 4.4.5. (As if TwonkyMedia-support would care).

Installing latest beta displays large jpegs for me. I have Twonky on a DNS-323 streaming to a PS3. Mind you...it is slow with large files. But this would be because of the DNS-323 not Twonky.

Only page I can find is http://www.twonkyvision.com/Download/Tw ... -beta.html There doesn't seem to be a beta for Netgear's ReadyNAS though :-(

Just a short update:Weeks ago someone even answered my email and asked for sample pics of my cam. TM5.x beta is able to stream the large jpegs to my PS3 now. However it's quite unstable so I tried 4.4.9 which came out lately. My hope that PacketVideo would have incorporated the changes regarding this issue in 4.4.9 as well was disappointed. So reverting to the TM5 beta again which they are working on, but very sloooooow. I have no idea what the development department at PV does all day long.

I have this same problem with TwonkyVision. I just have bought Nikon D90 and that doesn't work on PS3. Most images are sized 4288 x 2848 and they're all about 3MB. I don't think this is "large" size but it's because of resolution?

I have other DLNA NAS and that works fine with PS3 and D90 images. So this issue must be fixed by TwonkyVision!

It most certainly is a problem with Twonky. The images are working fine in version 5 on my PS3. I have tested it with my Nikon D90 photos at 12MP. Unfortunately for me, v5 on my Vista 64-bit Home Premium is crashing while discovering my library, while v4.4.11 is not. So Twonky should really do something about this in an update to 4.4.11, I feel its still more reliable. Also I'm only licensed for v4 :)

I, too, am experiencing this problem when streaming large .jpg images from my DNS-323 running Twonky 4.4.11 to my Xbox 360.

I'll have to do some more testing tonight, but, it seemed like it was happening with photos over ~3000x2400 pixels in size, most of which were roughly 1MB or less in filesize, it appears.

The funny thing is, though, that it appears the DNS-323/Twonky 4.4.11 has no problem streaming these to my Mac Mini running XBMC.

In the Clients/Security section of the Twonky web GUI, I have the Mac Mini designated as TwonkyPlayer client, which is what it was auto-detected as, while the Xbox 360 is designated XBOX 360, which I changed it to, from what it was originally recognized as, Generic Media Receiver.

So, it sorta seems like an Xbox 360 problem in that both my Mac Mini and my original Xbox, both running XBMC, have no problem at all streaming these larger pictures...in fact, they're not even that large compared with the sizes that some of you early on in the thread are mentioning.

The problem appears to be somewhat/mostly alleviated, though, by changing the Xbox 360 client type in the Twonky configuration from XBOX 360 to Generic Media Receiver. It still sometimes shows the pic thumbnails as "X's" but clicking on them will usually stream and load them on the 360, now. And everything else (read: music and video streaming) appears to work the same as it did using the XBOX 360 client type, so I think I'll leave it like it is now.

I have this problem also. I almost returned my new camera thinking there was something wrong with it! I bought a new canon G10. Using the highest resolution, the photos are displayed on my ps3 at 800x600. It really sucks.

Does any of the newest versions solve this issue?

The current TwonkyMedia Sever 5.0.46 does. It's faster than previous versions but has less configuration features and makes you pay for an upgrade.
