Hi all,

I'm after some advice here - can anybody recommend a uPNP / DLNA compliant software player. I've got the latest beta of Twonky running, with a PS3 acting as one client, but I've also got various machines dotted around the house - couple of XP based boxes, and a couple of Macs. Rather than having multiple libraries being managed (one per box) I want to let them take advantage of Twonky. I know that WMP under Vista sees Twonky, but I'm not going down the Vista route... I can't seem to find anything that does the job (really just the audio side that I'm concerned about) - so if anybody is running something they want to recommend, please let me know. Or, does anybody fancy writing something....

WMP11 does it, certainly on Vista, and perhaps on XP. You have of course, also got the web based MediaBrowser interface. Nero comes with MediaHome, and Vaio laptops come with Vaio Media.

I agree, WMP11 on Vista does do it - but I long ago de-installed Vista from my desktop and reverted to XP, and here WMP11 doesn't do it!

Nero works OK for what it is, but alas is Windows only, and doesn't have a great UI (in my opinion).

Can't comment on the Sony side of things.

I had hoped that something like the cross-platform Songbird might offer the capability, especially as it has recently launched a new version (0.5); bit it doesn't appear to have done so, and still seems a bit like style over substance.

I like the capability of browsing via the web interface; it's just that the 'player' element of it doesn't really exist (ie. just downloads the file). It would be great if Twonky incorporated the browser / player functionality of something like Vibestreamer (http://www.vibestreamer.com)(which is, alas, PC based - and I want to get away from having a central PC running all the time - energy reasons prefer to just leave on my NAS).

Actually a variant of Vibestreamer would be great - as this is web-based - and would allow PC/Mac/Unix and Mobile devices all to hook in to Twonky and play content.

The great shame about all of this is that uPNP / DNLA appears to have been adopted, on the client side, primarily by hardware manufacturers. Nobody seems to have considered the great many devices that people already own (i.e. PCs/Macs etc) and developed something for those. Something like a Java client would be great, running cross-platform, but I've yet to find anything.

If anybody else has any pointers they would be gratefully received!

Sounds like your browser is not setup for streaming, as it SHOULD stream it.

Have you tried the unofficial/unsupported flash interface "hack"? It works very well, and will stream your music content via flash player.

The other option is, if you are PC based, and use Firefox or Opera, is to install the Firefox/Opera WMP plugin.
