High CPU Usage

I have a TwonkyMedia server (registered) running on a dedicated Windows 2003 R2 server machine (as a Virtual Machine under VMWare) on a dual Quad Core HP Proliant DL380 G5 (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm ... 21516.html). This is (in terms of specs) a biga$$ machine for a DLNA server, but because I'm running a few other VM's for dedicated E-mail, web and other services I decided to assign a dedicated VM to my "DLNA server" too.

My problem is that the Twonky server sometimes just shoots up to 100% (or anywhere between 60% and 100%) for hours and hours and I can't pintpoint what's causing this. The advantage of a dedicated VM is that I can assure nothing else is getting in the way of Twonky other than Twonky itself. I have been experiencing this problem since version 4.1 (I believe, and I can't confirm any previous versions as I didn't use Twonky back then), up to the latest 4.4.5 version. When the problem arises the CPU load stays high (days if it has to) until I restart Twonky or reboot.

Because I am monitoring the host server I can come up with some neat graphs

Make sure you take notice that I assigned 2 CPU's to the VM. Though the load seems to be only about 50 to 60%, it is actually bogging down the whole system. As you can see, the usual load for the machine is nowhere near anything interesting, except when Twonky starts to bog down the machine.

Possible causes I've come up with so far:

• Changes in a folder (new MP3's, renaming files, deleting files) -> At 2 out of 3 times I made no changes whatsoever and the CPU usage shot up anyway
• Malformed/damaged ID3 tags / MP3 files -> Why does the initial scan have no problems then? I have, however downloaded and registered Tag & Rename 3.4.6 to clear all (bogus anyway) ID3 tags from my files. This is in progress as I write so I have no results for that

At the moment I am only using my PS3 as a client and I haven't used it in several weeks for now, so Twonky hasn't been serving anything; it just goes ape for whatever reason. Shutting down the VM stops it and all problems go away; after rebooting it, Twonky is fine until it, for some unknown reason, starts to go ape again several days later.

Can someone confirm this to be a known problem? Or give me any hints on what to do? I noticed some "high CPU usage fixes" in the release history, so maybe there are some similare problems still existing in the current version? Is there anything I can do to help resolve this problem? I would be happy to send in my VM image to Twonky (don't bother asking if you're not from Twonky) for debug reasons or whatever.

Come to think of it; Twonky also crashes when I try to view a (sub)folder on my PS3. I have my MP3's organised like this:

There are 28 directories under the C folder. All subdirectories contain MP3's with NO tags whatsoever, yet Twonky crashes (DLNA protocol error) after the "Crystal Method" directory. I need to restart Twonky to get it back up and running after that.

Also maybe worth mentioning is that I do have a rather large (I guess) MP3 collection; around 18.500 files at the moment.

I have cleared all MP3 tags since this post, more than a week ago and since then Twonky has caused 2 new 'spikes'. These spikes last for several hours if I don't interrupt the service. When I force twonky to update the database (or even create a new one) this is done in less then (say) 30 minutes; and I have confirmed the DB to be correct then. So this issue is starting to cause me serious headaches...

I've had no reaction so far, even about my emails to Twonky for support, whatsoever. Today (actually yesterday UP UNTIL TODAY) Twonky went beserk again:

I've had this problem with Twonky running on a 'normal machine' (non-virtual) too; but 'back then' it was an older version. And I'm not (anymore) in the mood of trying to reproduce the problem now on a non-virtual machine. Also, there's only a very, very, tiny chance that running under VMWare is causing the problem. I'm running many, many servers with all kinds of applications (mostly professional, but some personal too) under VMWare and I can't remember any kind of software causing trouble. To give you an idea: SAP, (Network) Monitoring, webservers (with high load), firewalls, domain controllers, custom software etc. etc. All to 'isolate' all these applications from eachother. Not to bash Twonky but compared to the rest, Twonky is only a tiny puny application that does nothing complicated (and even hasn't had any load whatsoever for some weeks, I haven't touched my PS3 in some time which is the only client) and just shouldn't cause these kind of irregular 'spikes'. And if it is, in fact, caused by it running under VMWare I'm pretty sure the problem lies within Twonky and not within VMWare. And even if the problem is caused by VMWare, some deeper investigation would have been nice to confirm this.

It has been a known problem and it is again; all I would like to hear from a Twonky representative is that they're looking in to it. I would have been glad to assist in the matter but I haven't had any response whatsoever. Just because some (or hell, even most) users don't expirience the problem is not a reason to ignore the onces that do. They could have at least responded. That's why I'm done with them and their products.

Call me a 'spoiled customer', but I've had (and have, on a regular basis) contact with many software vendors and am (usually) helped out great. I do my part of the job (not stalking them for every little problem) but when I really can't figure out the cause of a problem most vendors are in such case happy to help out and actually usually very happy with my feedback (being a software developer myself I can usually help out figure stuff out with just a few hints, not needing complete in-depth how-to's). But being just plain ignored is something I rarely encounter. Having paid for a product and then getting ignored means, in my profession, the vendor gets to draw the short straw, not me.

Also, the longer I think about it, the more nonsense this statement is to me. There are dozens of settings in Twonky which might differ from your system to mine and also my MP3 collection (or other media files) might differ wildly from yours. I wouldn't be so fast to reason it must be my system or the fact that I'm running in VMWare. And not only that, even the environment (running as local system, dedicated service user, normal user, etc...), permissions, OS itself and even allocated amount of memory, type of CPU and whatever could be the cause of the problem.

Finally received an answer today, just keeping other readers posted. My reply with their response inline:

The least you can do is let me (or other customers for that matter) know that the mail was received and that you're going to look into it whenever you can. Not letting customers know anything is just not-done and is the cause of all this frustration.

I have done that already and, for as far I could see, none of the logfiles contained any messages of any meaning. I will be happy to send the logfiles when I get home tonight though.

As mentioned in the topic on the forum: I'd be happy to share my VM with you so you can reproduce the problems EXACTLY. The VM can be run in the (free) VMWare server edition and needs very little resources. It should be a matter of minutes before you have it up and running. From there on you're free to do with it whatever you want and thus can troubleshoot it first hand.

Well, I'm willing to give you a second chance. I will send my logfiles later today and if they don't show anything weird I am willing to send you my VM. If you've looked (seriously) into the problem and cannot find the root of the problem then I will not want a refund and chalk it up as "too bad, tried and didn't work". If no effort is made in this matter then I want a refund. Sounds fair to me, you agree?

Hi, Rob!

I don't know if this is the same problem, but I added about 380 GB of music files to my new HP Mediasmart server with PVConnect / Twonky. After that, it all went crazy. Turned out to be the Windows Media Connect server process that used up most of the memory and processor time. I have just set that process to manual startup, rebooted the server, and things are now looking more normal. Now I'm just waiting on Twonky to scan all the files...
