Why are my photos so small?

Post by dholldorff » Sun Mar 08, 2009 10:21 pm

I have just installed TwonkyMedia Server 5.0.46 on my Synology 107+ NAS and solved the problem I had streaming photos to my Philips DigitalFrame (WiFi). TwonkyMedia also streams our XVid Videos perfectly to my TV (Philips 37PF9731D/10). I can play music files on my Denon S-302. So far so good!

But... (too bad there is a but :( )

We love multimedia slide shows on the TV with music and photos. LOL: TwonkyMedia Server is streaming the .jpg's to the TV as miniatures! They look like thumbnails. It doesn't matter if I play from a playlist or directly from a directory. I don't see any way to influence this. Am I - hopefully - wrong?

Are you sure some other program has not created thumbnails, and Twonky is simply serving up everything it can find?

I know my old Sony camera use to annoyingly create smaller thumbmails with the tn_ prefix...

I don't think that thumbnails are being sent. My first digital camera always made them, but I have long deleted them. I went through the directories when I moved my files to the NAS last week and deleted everything that looked "generated". If, as in your example, thumbnails had different names, then they wouldn't be referenced in the playlist I just put together tonight. But when I use it on my TV, the pictures are itty bitty. The originals are mostly 2560x1920 pixels.

Just for the record: I previously had my photos on a PC and used Windows Media Player playlists. The TV showed them properly.

Interesting new development. When I use my Denon S-302 to stream photos to my TV, they are the right size, but they are also incredibly pixely, as if thumbnails were being expanded to fit the screen. Now, Denon is a partner of Twonky, right? And this should work on a Denon DMR?

Help?!

I am currently reading my NAS based media data into the PC Twonky Server V5.0.45 that was installed with TMM. I will test this with the TV and the Denon S302 to see whether the NAS based Twonky server is the problem. I'll post the results later today.

I think this interests others as well as I have found posts about this in the Philips part of the forum. It seems to be a general problem with the Philips TVs.

<poke> Funny that Microsoft's Windows Media Player 11 did everything I needed and Twonky can't (except for the NAS, which runs Linux, sigh). Since when is Microsoft software better? <end poke>

Now I have read my NAS-based media files into the PC-based TwonkyMedia Server 5.0.45, created the database 3 times (it still doesn't seem right, so it is presently recreating a fourth time) and tested how pictures stream to both my TV and to the Denon DMR. Exactly the same happens from both servers to both players. The TV shows miniatures and the Denon shows very pixely pictures.

What can I do? In another post http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6229 , a user reports the same problem and having tweaked his Twonky server to sometimes get the correct format.

Is no one else having such problems? Or does no one stream slideshows to external players? What are people doing with all their digital photos?

Help!

HA! It's a bug in Version 5.0.

I installed version 4.4.11 on my NAS and voila! Correctly sized and scaled pictures on both the Philips TV and the Denon S302.

Better fix this soon.

Whooppee! I can view my pictures now!

Daphne,

If you're a really technical person, there is something you can do to help us fix this issue:

1. Use Wireshark to capture the data sent when you browse the content with bad thumbnails. You can download it here: http://www.wireshark.org/download.html

2. Use Intel's "Device Spy" to get a device description. You can download it here: http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/a ... m#anchor_2

If this doesn't make any sense to you, don't worry. We can try to get this from someone else. I thought I would mention it just in case.

Rick, I did part of what you asked and captured the data streams between TMS 5.0.61 and my TV. I also captured data going to my Denon S-302 and tried to do the same with my Philips digital picture frame. The network and problem description are in the ZIP as a txt file. I can't see TMS 5.0.61 on the picture frame, so I couldn't document the traffic between them.

I couldn't download the Intel software you referenced. The files are empty. I posted a note about this on the Intel forum (someone else also posted last night) and will get you the device descriptions as soon as I can get the software.

I can't upload the files, they seem to be too large. Where should I send them?

dholldorff,

Thanks for doing all the work to find a bug in this software... Too bad Twonky has no intrest in your help, or following up on the subject.

I was actually considering purchasing this software, but if they cant followup on bug reports, too bad for them.

Thanks!

I have the same problem.

I was using 4.4.6 on a Linkstation Pro and photos were streamed correctly to both my Samsung B650 TV and to my PS3.

I have recently been trying the 5.1 betas and both of them only serve thumbnails to the TV but still send full-res photos to the PS3. I have tried modifying settings in the clients.db file but nothing has changed - I posted the same issue in the Beta threads but no response so far.

Thank you both for posting! I have been thinking the wntire time that I was reporting an issue that was of no general interest. As long as TMS 4.4.x runs correctly, I am more or less satisfied. It would be nice to be able to use TMM to make slide shows out of my many photos, but I will find another solution.

I have been looking at the log entries when I request a photo to be displayed on my TV. TMS v5.1.0.8 is serving up the albumart (thumbnail) versions of the images (160x120) from the db/cache folder instead of the full versions of the photos. The log entries are:

If I use the TwonkPlayer from my PC the calls are for /photos/filename.jpg instead!

I have tried capturing with Ethereal (predecessor to WireShark) but can't see anything relevant in the capture file.

Hi all,

coming back to this topic. I bought a week ago a QNAP TS-110. Twonky (Version : I believe it was 5.1.2) was on board and worked directly with my PS3.

Then I updated the QNAP TS-110 (new Firmware 3.2.4, old was 3.2.3) and one change was an upgrade to TMS 5.1.3.
After that, I have also the problem with the small (160x120 resolution) pics ?!?
Has someone solved this problem ?

regards,

Georg

Hi,

I can confirm the same problem. On WHS-Version 4.4.5 everything works alright, testing version 5.1.2 I'll see only thumbnails, too. So I went back to version 4.4.5 which cannot handle mkv-files...

Using Scaleo Home Server (WHS) and Conceptronic Full HD Media Player.

Really seems to be a bug which hopefully gets fixed in version 5.1.4?

Hi RollyRoger,

I hope so too. A few minutes ago I found an brandnew firmware (3.2.5) for my QNAP TS-110, which includes the Twonky 5.1.4 !!!
The update process is working at the moment, I will come back with the results.

regards,

Georg

... and it works !

The problem with the small thumbnail-pics (160x120) is solved, Twonky shows Version 5.1.4-RC2 in my QNAP.

cheers,

Thanks Georg!

So there is hope... - though this bug is apperently more than a year old.

Still sticking to 4.4.5 - won't by any new version - no matter for what special deal ever - until such basic things don't get fixed.

Many Thanks -

Still have this problem with version 6 RC3. So still not solved for me - version 4.4.5 instead works fine.

I am sad that this issue has not yet been solved. I use V 4.4.17 on my Synology 107+ NAS. I was just considering putting in the work to update both firmware and TMS on the NAS but thankfully checked in here beforehand. I think I'll leave things as they are. It works wonderfully.

Same problem. Any other DLNA server that does not have this problem?

As I stated above, I don't have the problem with TwonkyServer 4.4.17. Though I am curious about newer versions, I am sticking to this version according to the premise: "Never touch a running system."

Good luck!

I had the same problem on my 37PF9731D Philips television. However, I found a solution on the QNAP NAS Community Forum.
What worked for me was to edit in the resources/clients.db file this part:

>>
NA:Philips Streamium AV
HH:Philips-Software-WebClient
XM:PHILIPSSRT
MT:avi,divx video/x-ms-avi
HP:LIVEWITHLENGTH
TR:JPEG138x103,JPEG1920x1080,MP3,WAV,WMV
XM:DLNANO
DB:FIX

I changed the line

TR:JPEG138x103,JPEG1920x1080,MP3,WAV,WMV

to

TR:JPEG_LRG,MP3,WAV,WMV

Maybe this solution can help others too.

hans, I think I love you!!!! Thank you so much for your post.... IT WORKS!!!!

I have a newish Panasonic Lumix camera which has 10 megspixels and makes photos that weren't being streamed by TwonkServer V4.4.17. Perhaps they were too large. So I took a deep breath and upgraded to TwonkyServer 6.0.26 this morning. Oops! Photos were back to being thumbnails. I made the change in clients.db you proposed and voila! Correctly sized jpgs are being correctly streamed... all of them!!! Thank you very much.
