Recommended metadata editor?

I'm currently testing Twonky Media Server on Linux to see if it's the best option for our home setup.
TMS has a lot of options for listing files which seems great, but I'm unable to use most of them because our library is missing the correct metadata tags.
Can someone recommend a tool that will allow me to update the metadata? We have mp3 and aac audio files, and mp4, avi and mkv video files.
