Documentation / manual of ini settings

Post by MartinS » Fri Jun 18, 2010 10:01 pm

Hi,

I am using TMS since version 4.4.x on my Buffalo Linkstation Pro, testing now V. 6.x but currently running 5.1.3-dev which is the latest with "support" of MKV files.

My problem is that I cannot find a complete manual where all settings of the file "twonkymedia-server.ini" are documented. I even opened a support case at PV, but they did not reply since weeks...

When searching for a specifiy topic eg. transcoding the ini settings of this topic are explained but there is no complete manual I could find.

Can anyone supply me with such a manual?

Thank you in advance!

Cheers,

Martin

Again, just solved another problem with my new Philips NP2900 not being able to "see" my Twonkys (Buffalo LinkStations, TMS build 6.0.32) by using this post...

http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 900#p28677

...but still haven't received documentation for ini settings, what they actually mean and which values are allowed and their implications...

So does anybody have a documentation on all the settings in "twonkymedia-server.ini"?

I'd really appreciate it...PacketVideo...anyone?

Btw. I never got a reply on the case I opened way back, even after rerequesting information.

Cheers,

Martin

I would agree, it sure would be nice to have more information on settings in the twonkymedia-server.ini

But, I do see that in the ini, there are a lot of comments that tell you exactly what the setting are for

However, there are a few settings, that are a bit elusive, in there nameing and or implication

So are we asking Twonky, to give us a manual, a How To, to edit the ini?
Or are we asking them to give us the missing peices of the puzzle?

@MartinS

Dont get me wrong, but I honestly dont think a manual would have solved the issue you had
As the solution was related to how configure twonky to work on that nas with that client
That information is more akin to a troubleshooint manual, rather than a documentation manual
Im not saying that more information is a bad thing
But I am saying that the information alone is not the complete answer
However, it is a starting point, to resolveing problems

For Ex:
The problem yo had was with twonky binding to an ip and or network interface
And the end result was you clients couldnt get to the interface
On the nix builds, here in the forums we see that problem often being reported
And people suggest doing things that ultimately change one or both of the following
I mentioned that documentation alone is not the answer
As in this case, the below, is pretty straight foreword
A troubleshooting manual is what would be need to solve the issue you had
which would have ended up changeing these values in the end

# IP address to listen to (default: all networks)
ip=

# disable SSDP on localhost
disablelocalssdp=0

@ALL

In my opinion, I would say the current comments in the twonkymedia-server.ini
for me at least do tell me what I need to know
But there are a few that dont tell me enough

For Ex:

What is the difference betweeb the following?
I can clearly see that defaultview=advanceddefault assigns the view to clients
But autotree=3, what the hell does that mean?
What does 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9 do?
What are the implications of the setting?

# default view
autotree=3

# default view for clients
defaultview=advanceddefault

I have no idea what this is used for, not to mention where to point it ot
My GUESS, is that it used for remote access uploads via https

# Not commented ?
secure_folder_path=

This one is kinda funny
It states session count, meaning a number, but states an absolute path
what the ?...

# Absolute path to file with DTCP session count
dtcpsessioncount=

.

Once again, I am not trying to negate the idea of better documentation
But, we do need more information

@Phibertron:

You are right, I would not have solved the issue with documenation, I think I haven't made myself very clear what I wanted to point out here...

When I found the topic on the NP2900 it said to configure IP address listening in general, but said nothing about SSDP. So I tried to edit the ini file and realized again, that there is some kind of description in the ini file, but mostly it is a very general info, without the exact "how to type the values per config item". Furthmore I wanted to know what exactly SSDP is, whether I would have to turn it off and so on...same for most of the other config items.

So, yes, there is general info on the config items in the ini file, but for me it is not enough to tell how and why to configure since there is no manual for this information either. I really like this software - paid money for the licenses - so the only thing I want is to use all its features.

Anyway thank you so much for your reply!

Cheers,

Martin

I hear ya man

I went through some of that with the ini and rpc stuff, wanting/needing to know more

Have you ever tried to work with the navtree, fun fun, let me tell ya

I did put together a post of all the RPC stuff if your interested in them
http://twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9364

I'll see if I can muster up the energy/mindset to do one for the server ini stuff

Sure I shouldn't have to do that,
but I do it out of the same reason as I was looking for it
If I learn and or find something, I usually post it in any of the forums that I read/post in
As I also go looking for stuff, and hate when I cant find it
or that no has posted anything about it

FWIW

I have posted a thread, in which to start the process of trying to document
things we do know about these settings
