Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Check out http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6.0.31-RC6/. This lists all Twonky versions for NAS, including Synology.
Because of the different types of processors used by Synology in their products, you first need to find out which one is used in your DS221j and select the Twonky-build accordingly.
The installation is pretty strait forward, using the nas-installer in the package.

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Extract the downloaded zipfile to your pc, then run nassetup.exe.
Click on Accept, then enter your NAS ip (something like 192.168.1.xxx), user (root) and password, press continue.
The installation should start copying files and finally start the twonkyserver on your Nas.
Update: just noticed the kirkwood zipfile doesn't contain the nassetup.exe..... try the method below:
If for some reason this doesn't work, you can always copy the contents of the zip-file to your NAS and then start the server.
Hope this helps.

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Been trying for a while now and this is the error i am getting
"Resolving www.twonkymedia-1386-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.32.zip... failed name or service not known.
"wget: unable to resolve host address 'www.twonkymedia-1386-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.32.zip"
I cant seem to understand this a i thought that as long as i pont the wget command in the right direction it shoud download, i am wondering if this is an issue with DSM 3.1 update that has just been released for the Synology Nas Drive

I'd love to help, but would probably make things worse
As I dont have one of those, nor have had the pleasure of doing a hand instal on one
Hopefully someone here who has one can lend some assistance

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
If you could download it manually on a computer
and then upload it to the nas
you should be able to get it from there
But what commands are needed is beyond me though

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
I just found out why its not working
The link is broken, its not you!
someone made note of it here being broken http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 427#p34821
Here is the one for 6.0.31-RC6 if interested
http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6. ... 31-RC6.zip
You can usually find the liks from here
http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=7653
and then you can sometimes manipulate the url for ex:
for ones that are listed there for whatever reason, but not all of them

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Sweet, at least we have some progress
Think of it as practice for when they fix the broken link to 6.0.32
You can do it all over again LOL
But it should hopefully be easier then, that is once we get the kinks worked out

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
If your ip is still 192.168.1.105
Can you get to http://192.168.1.105:9000
If not then that command litterally told twonky to be "synologyIP.address"
you should have replaced the "synologyIP.address" with the actual ip of the nas
which I hope is static
http://192.168.1.105:9000/rpc/set_optio ... .168.1.105
because if its not and you tell twonky its 192.168.1.105
when the ip of the nas changes youll not be able to once again get to twonky
Im pretty sure that you should not have to change this, but then again...
If you still cant get in
then that directory where you installed it
somewhere in there is a file called twonkymedia-server,ini (not the one that says default in the name)
youll have to edit that file and change this line
# IP address to listen to (default: all networks)
ip=
and remove the "synologyIP.address" if its there
and either leave it blank
or use 192.168.1.105

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Once you do get things up and running
this may be of interest, as they mention the loopback (127.0.0.1)
on the synology forums
You can achieve the same thing by doing this
# disable SSDP on localhost
disablelocalssdp=1
or
http://192.168.1.105:9000/rpc/set_optio ... ocalssdp=1
This would make it so you wouldnt have to deal with assigning a static ip like we have been talking about
and the loopback issues they talk about

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Well this is good practice for me as i am going to start again, its a bit late but i want to get it done.
So once i am up a running if i enter this (as long as its my ip)
"http://192.168.1.105:9000/rpc/set_optio ... ocalssdp=1" then it should work?
Do you know anything about having to restart each time?

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
That should work, keep changes to a minimum at first
Im pretty sure you'll have to restart for most changes to take effect but thats easy too
with this command
http://192.168.1.105:9000/rpc/restart
If you want the full list or known rpc commands, check this out
http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9364
My take on RPC commands is that they are great for quick and dirty tasks
or for being leveraged from a script
but the gui is great for most things
and sometimes a little safer

but if you dont know you ip at the time your in there
then edit the ini
the ip part we dont want to do is the thing from earlier
where ip=
we want it to equal nothing, wich is auto
and the deafult
so there is nothing to do in that regard

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Thanks - not sure what you mean though, are you saying not to bother with the IP thing at all and just leave it (not even put the command you suggested).
Not sure if you can help me with this small problem that i have now but every time i log out of putty where i have been doing the config Twonky stops and i need to go back in and enter "/usr/local/twonkymedia/twonkymedia start"
its hard work is this.

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
What Im saying is if you follow the instructions here
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... ky#p134324
DONT do the http://synologyip.address:9000/rpc/set_ ... IP.address
do this instead
http://192.168.1.105:9000/rpc/set_optio ... ocalssdp=1
the last entry in that post are the instructions do make note of how to deal with that
this will allow twonky to start when the device is started
so afer you do the following, "you probably have to reboot the nas", is my gues

Log into a session as root:
Enter the following, this will create a script in the startup directory - this is to start twonky when your Synology boots up:
echo "/usr/local/twonkymedia/twonkymedia start" > /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S99twonky.sh
Enter the following to give the file execute attributes:
chmod 700 /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S99twonky.sh

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
The reason it might stop running is that your not logged in as root
Once you log out of the user you are logged in as all your sessions will end
Which is why they have you create the script under root
so that when the root user logs in upon boot time
it will run that script to start twonky
there may be a way to execute that script in such a way the it runs as root
while your logged in as another user
so that when you log out, it stays running
but I dont know that command , sorry
have you tried rebooting yet, to see if it starts?

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Hello,
I brought the Twonky 6.0.32 to work on my DS211j.
Thank you for your great tutorial!
Now I have a big problem after all. I own a Philips TV (PFL8654), it detects the server, but it displays me no files. My PC recognizes Twonky and plays me all shared files .
I don't know how to continue. I've tried everything and the whole day working on it.
Can you help me?
Sorry for my bad english, I am from Germany .
Regards Dany

Hello,
now I have a new problem, I have accidentally enter this setting (http://127.0.0.1:9000/rpc/set_option?ip=127.0.0.1) and now I do not get the Twonky server? Previously, it always worked with this setting (http://192.168.2.111:9000).
What did I do that? Now nothing works .
Can I fix it again? Please help me...

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
I'm guessing that http://127.0.0.1:9000/rpc/set_option?ip=127.0.0.1 changes a setting in the config files of Twonky.
If I look at twonkymedia-config.html, I can see two entries for an IP-adress. Try changing these to the correct IP-adress and see if this solves your problem.
Use DSM file browser to go to the directory where you initially installed Twonky (public/twonkyvision?) and edit the file (Download - edit -upload).
No guarantee, but you might give it a try.....

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
So I now have a "twonkymedia-server-default.ini" found in this but there are no "IP-Adress" to be seen.
I've looked everywhere now and could not find a "twonkymedia-config.html".
Where could this file? In the installation folder, it is not.
Excuse me, but I am very inexperienced with Linux, I've started yesterday to work with it.

I was mistaken in my earlier post.
See my latest post where I'm referring to twonkymedia-config.html
Still, I'm not 100% sure it'll help, but it's worth a try.

the file you need to look for is the "twonkymedia-server.ini"Dany250 wrote:So I now have a "twonkymedia-server-default.ini" found in this but there are no "IP-Adress" to be seen.

the twonkymedia-server-default.ini is used by twonky during install and is the base file
that it also uses to create the twonkymedia-server.ini

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
Hello phibertron!
Thank you for your answer! I have found both files and now they have both been changed (they were /var/twonkymedia/twonkymedia).
But now I have the problem that Twonky can not boot. There is always the error: Permission denied.
Is there a way to completely delete Twonky, so I can reinstall everything again?
Best regards
Dany

Re: Install Twonky on Synology Nas Drive
I can not believe it!
I copied all files and re-done the entire installation process again. Annnnnnd it goes again.
Now I'm just arrived again at the problem that I can not see any media files. I see the Twonkyserver, but no files, although they are in the web interface and are recognized by Windows.
I do not know what is going wrong there, I just do not understand.
Is there anyone out who has a presumption?
I am grateful for each help.

Try this
replace <serverip> with the actual ip address of you nas
DO NOT use the 127 address
