Transcoding from NAS to Sony Bravia TV

Post by sandrone » Wed May 11, 2011 6:50 pm

Hi all,
I'm planning to buy a Netgear ReadyNas machine and I would like to send my .avi files directly from the NAS through the wifi router to my Sony Bravia TV, that supports DLNA protocol but does not have a built-in codec for the .avi format. It is actually able to decode only MPEG2/AVCHD. This means that I would need to transcode on the fly my videos. I tried to do something like that with a Synology NAS where I installed the "serviio" media server but it turned out that its on-board ARM processor was not powerful enough, resulting in good quality only for low resolution videos. What I would like to ask you guys therefore is if using Twonky Media Server I can perform the required task.

Thanks a lot in advance for your hints!

Regards,
Sandro

Twonky can transcode but the setup is difficult. But the big roadblock is that most NAS devices do not have the performance necessary to do video transcoding.

Also if you are using a wifi connection the results will mediocre at best.
