The problem with this command (at least on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Linux) it the leading dash in front of the $videothumbtime variable (or -30 as used in this example) . Removing it makes video thumbnailing work. Makes sense, since "-30" is a parameter while "30" is an argument to the parameter itsoffset.
