Twonky, MKV Files and PS3/Sony Internet TV

Hello Twonkies!

First post here so be nice. :)

I have a QNAP TS210 with version 5.<something> of twonky Server on it. I also have an Internet ready TV and a PS3 which are connected to my network. I have a whole bunch of MP3s, pics and videos on the QNAP which the PS3 and TV can see perfectly well. Brilliant.

However I have a bunch of MKV files which they simply can't deal with. I'm about to update the QNAP to the latest version of Twonky Server. I'm guessing that won't directly solve my issue. However I found this blog entry: http://www.vspecialist.co.uk/qnap-nas-a ... ia-server/ which implies with a little editing of a data file I can make this go.

Do I need to make this change? Could a professional Twonky person tell me if this is a bad idea? If I should make this change, what MIME type should I be using for MKV files on PS3 and Sony Internet TV?

Many thanks if you're able to help me with this!

You first need to discover why your TV and PS3 won't play these MKV files. MKV is just a container format (like an envelope), it could contain many different video/audio codecs or profiles that your players don't understand.

When I have problems with a file I always analyse them with Mediainfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) to discover what is inside a file. From the information this tool provides it usually possible to figure out how to re-encode the files so that they work.

You can't play MKV files on a PS3. End of story.

Remux to mp4. If that doesn't work you'll have to reencode to mp4, Profile 4.1

Search for xvid4psp

Thanks for the replies guys. I am in the process of remuxing all the mkvs to mpg files using mkv2vob but it's slow going - hence hoping this would work. Michael (linked blog owner) got mkv's playing on his Sony BlueRay player via a MIME trick and I was hoping I might be able to so the same with my Bravia TV or PS3 but no luck (so far).
