Bravia TVs

A Twonky Forum user reported in another section that their Sony Bravia KDL40W5500 works with TwonkyMedia server and TwonkyMedia manager. They even claim they can drag and media from TwonkyMedia manager to the icon representing the Sony TV to play MPEG2 Video, JPEG Photos and MP3 Audio.

Can others confirm that this works? In another post, a Bravia owner was saying the Video tree was not appearing.

I have this TV and a Western Digital My Book World Edition running (I believe) Twonky Server. I can connect to the server and stream MP3s but no video. However, the MP3 files cut out after between 10 and 40 seconds. I can try and lay the same file multiple times and each time it cuts out after a different amount of time. Wierdly they also appear wth an unknown artist yet the tags are fully populated. When I stream music from my Vista PCs everything works perfectly (even for the same files) Any suggestions on the MP3 issue would be greatly appreciated.

DLNA-certified devices are only tested to work a few video formats like MPEG-2. Don't expect formats like DivX to work with products like this. This issue is not related to TwonkyMedia server (TMS).

Can you check what version of TMS is running on your WD device? Several MP3-related Sony streaming issues were recently resolved. This may be a server-issue -- as your tests suggest.

Rick, thanks for your reply. I have v4.4.9 running on the NAS. The TV doesn't even show there being a Movies tree available. The MP3 issue is the one that I'm really after fixing as most of my films are on DVD anyway (at the moment) I have connected the NAS via a crossover to the TV so I don't think its a netwrok issue. I spoke to Western Digital who got me to restore factory settings and completely wipe the NAS then try again to no avail. I have also spoken to ony who blamed the network and when I let them know I had tested it with a crossover eventually emailed me to say i need to enable "Packet Streaming" on my network but I am confused as to how to go about this neither my NAS or Hub have any reference to this in the documentation (mind you its a BT Home Hub and documentation is limited).

Any idea how to upgrade the Server on my NAS?

Hi, I have a Sony Bravia 40W5500 connected to my pc through an old router, the TV discovers perfectly the twonky server, with all the folders that I define, but I am only able to play music, not jpg or any movie in several formats that I tried.

I just realized that all folders root to the music menu in the TV, thats probably the reason the tv is not able to show the photos or movies because the "renderer" is using is the mp3 one, not jpg, nor avi. What do you think? Any idea?

I now have my Sony 32V5500 working with TM most of the time. What I've found is that on the Sony Crossbar menu, all music, photo and video folders are accessible from each of the Sony's top level options. In other words, if you select music on the Crossbar menu, all the TM top level menus are available, music, photos and video, so it doesn't matter which you choose. However, it sometimes takes some time to populate the various folders and their contents don't always display. Photos are most reliable.

Hi
the crossbar operation is ok and logical. If someone knows this there is no problem.
I have some other problems with my BRAVIA KDL 40V5500 and my BUFFALO Linkstation mini.

1. Videos are shown in the file lists but any try to play them ends up with "Playback not available" ( in German:"Wiedergabe nicht möglich" ). I tried it with several different formats (MPG1, MPG2, others) at different bitrates.

2. MP3 Files only play for some seconds and stop.
The MP3 Problem seems to depend to the bitrate.
QUOTATION START:
.. so I did some further tests with mps files converted at different rates.
The playback limit changes accordingly.....
16 kbps - plays through to the end
128 kbps - plays to 40 seconds
192 kbps - plays to 60 seconds
So it's kbps related !!
QUOTATION END

It is shure a general problem that regards all SONY BRAVIA DLNA TV Clients (KDL 32,40,46 V,W, ...) in combination with Buffalo and other NAS Devices.

Read also in these forums about the prob:
http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/b ... ad.id=9857
(Someone there wrote that the prob doesn't exist with a PSP)
and
http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 112#p24112

After several postings in other forums and after some e-mail corresponence with the SONY Support they called me back (Respect!) and told me the problem doesn't occur in their test environment.
The only difference is that they use the twonky ver 5 instead of my 4.4.8.
The problem is now how to update my linkstation mini from twonky 4.4.8 to twonky 5. Does anybody have a solution?

I cannot get transcoding to work with Twonky.

However, transcoding works from WMP 12, part of Windows 7 (out in October). I successfully streamed AVIs and MOVs directly to the TV!

My first time in this forum!

I have installed TwonkyMedia server and can successfully play music (mp3) and see photos (jpg) on my Sony KDL-40W5500.

However I cannot play videos. Looking through the tv manual, it states, "to play files that are received from a network device, they need to conform to one of the following file formats:
Video:- AVCHD, HDV, MPEG2-PS (which in some cases may not be able to be played)"

Googling on AVCHD seems to produce plenty of info about converting from AVCHD to other formats but I am unable to find how to convert from avi to AVCHD. Can anyone advise what they have or are using?

Much appreciated.

Hi Roger,
It's also my first time in this forum :)
Welcome on board!
Actually i face the same issue with my 40W5500.
I you want to broadcast your AVI files, you should perform an on-fly transcoding with twonky by using a third party software ( ffmeg ).
AVCD means H264 High profile. This codec is the standard for all the brand-new HD devices ( cameras ..).
The transcoding profile depends of your AVI.
What is the codec used inside the AVI container?
I am going to perform some test asap, i will keep you update.
As mention in the documentation, even if the file has been conformed, "in some cases it may not be able to be played".
I am waiting for Sony feedback about the transcoding constraints.
It seems that other TV like Samsung are able to manage DivX, H264, wmv.........

Hi Mickael

Thanks for the info re the mysteries of the video standards used by the Sony. I look forward to the result of your tests with much interest.

I am also contemplating a firmware approach where a company here in Australia is selling for around AU$100 a device that gives either composite video or HDMI output from video files that are stored on an external USB drive.

I own a Qnap TS109 III NAS that came shipped with Twonky 4.4.9 (I believe), and I had this exact same problem when trying to play MP3s on my W4500 Sony TV. Upgraded Twonky to 4.4.11 and the problem was still there. A few days ago Qnap released a new firmware upgrade which also included Twonky 4.4.17 and now I can play all MP3s successfully on my TV. Most of my MP3s are 320kbps and some of them are over 10 mins, and like I said, they all play successfully.

So you don't need Twonky 5, just upgrade your already existing Twonky 4 to 4.4.17.

Hello,
I have the Western Digital MyBook World Edition NAS (1TB Ethernet edition) bundled with Twonky Media Server 4.4.9w and a Sony Bravia KDL40W5500 connected at the same network.

I am experiencing the same problem as other users have mentioned, i.e when i try to stream MP3 files (of various bitrates) on my TV, they play for 10-30 sec on the TV and then they stop.

However, I installed Twonky Media Server 4.4.18 trial version on my Laptop which is connected on the same network as the NAS and tried to stream the same MP3 files (which are stored on WD MyBook) and to my success they all played till the end. I was even able to stream videos on the TV without any problem!!!

Hence, given that the hardware i.e router and wireless bridges which connect the TV, MyBook and Laptop are optimally configured and my home network is stable, reliable and "packet streamable" (as SONY Bravia technical support indicates); I concluded that the failure to stream MP3's and video through my WD MyBook WE NAS is due to the version of Twonky Media Server that is running (4.4.9w).

So, my question is how can I upgrade the preinstalled Twonky Media Server on WD MyBook to 4.4.18 or even later versions?

Will the upgrade solve the streaming problem?

Please any technician or user that has an answer or any suggestions is welcome!

PS. SONY and Western Digital support says it's network related problem, but if it's network related problem how can i stream to my TV music, photo and video files residing on MyBook through Twonky Media Server (4.4.18) running on my Laptop without any problem?!?!?!

Had a number of attempts to get video streaming to my 40W5500 without success still.

Below is my config and the tests I've tried.

Windows Home Server PP2 running TMS 5.0.61.

I currently have the television set up in TMS as a DLNA 1.0 media receiver as this appears to provide the best functionality. MP3 music and photos are working fully with the TMS icon displaying in the crossbar. TMS does not show up in the crossbar under video but the server is visible as a device.

generic media receiver worked as well but with less functionality in music
DLNA 1.5 worked the same as generic media receiver

this list of media receiver settings didn't work either (I tried them just in case) - Windows Media Player, Sony Network Media receiver and PS3. I've contacted Sony just in case they hae anything new to say.

The problem looks to be somewhere within the definition of video that the Sony tv is expecting from TMS. TMS is working ok as accessing music, photos and video through Windows Media Player on other computers works ok.

Can the Twonky team suggest anything else to try? It looks as though no one has been able to get video playing at all on these televisions.

I am looking to see a solution that would work in my NAS maybe on the fly transcoding.

PS3 media server beta works great from PC transcode any kind of video file and the TV works. For those you want to run it from pc try it.

Thanks

Hi

heres my story (in line with many others it seems)

Bravia TV as receiver, High performance PC with XP running twonky as server. Local network with high throughput < 1ms latency

I have tested a number of software servers (nero, SImple center, MS WMP) and had some mixed results. had long (very bad) support case with SONY in DK.
I can see the servers instances i have had installed and can play mp3 and see jpg, but movies is a problem.
long story short...
Sony TV will browse through the server into folders, but then when loading, trying to list movies it comes up with "no items to display" but a few times i have had certain files that DID appear and play flawlessly.
As i understand it, transcoding should make the format of the actual media file unimportant. The server should transcode any format into DLNA on the link for the TV to receive.
If the time the TV tries to list media files is a problem, i tried setting a folder with only 1 file but to no prevail.

Now i installed monkey after advice from Sony, this works well if i have jpg or mp3, but if i remove all but movies, the TV cannot see the monkey server, diagnostic on the TV will see it, but fails to connect to it. if i add a jpg and browse to pictures, it works.

as i just downloaded the monkey software, i presume it is the latest version.

Any comments appreciated, do i need to buy some kind of hardware server?

/Nicolai

Hello,

Here are my experiences with TMS and Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500. I had been happy user of TMS4.4.17 until last week when I updated to TMS 5.1 ...

With old release I have been able to stream all media supported by Sony Bravia. With latest release I'm not able to stream/browse my favourite m2ts files from HD camcorder on Bravia TV anymore! They are simply not browsable even they are reported in TMS content database - I was able to stream it eg. to my PC but not to Bravia!

I have opened also official ticket to Twonky, but so far I have not received any feedback (except that my question was registered)... I will probably have to get back to 4.4.17 again (I had also problems with 5.0.68) :(

TMS 4.4.17

photos - JPEG - working OK!
music - MP3 - working OK!
video VOB, MPEG2-PS (ripped DVDs) - working OK
video AVCHD (m2ts) from HD camcorder - working OK

TMS 5.1

photos - JPEG - working OK!
music - MP3 - working OK!
video VOB, MPEG2-PS (ripped DVDs) - working OK
video AVCHD (m2ts) from HD camcorder - NOT WORKING AT ALL with my Sony Bravia!!!

Hi,
Just seen this thread and thought I would add my experience so far. I am running TwonkyMedia Manager 1.2.049 on Windows Home Server PP2. I am streaming music (MP3s) Pictures (Jpeg) and video (Ripped DVD VOB files) to a Sony Bravia KDL52w5500 tv. As other users have already said the Bravia menu is not the most intuative as all three formats (Music, Photos and Video) seem to appear at each option. However all formats seem to stream OK albeit the TV takes a while to access the files.
The only issue I have found is that DVDs ripped by DVD Shrink by default are broken up the Vob files into 1Gb files. This means that a film starts to play but then halts as it reaches the end of the first VOB. I am now in the process of joining seperate VOB files together with JoinVobFiles Tool. The only problem is that they are difficult to recognise on the TV menue unless you only browse by Folder. If you try other options you get dozens of similar named VOB files e.g VTS_01_1 :? . Does anyone know if you can rename a VOB file with a meaningiful name without affecting its functionality ie Green Mile.VOB or Fast and Furious.VOB? Also how do you create a slideshow of Photos. Do you have to do this in Twonky Manager first or has anyone discovered how to do this on the TV?

In DVDShrink go to Edit, Preferences and then the Output Files tab - there is an option there for whether to split the VOB files into 1GB chunks or not. (This is with v3.2.0.15)

You can rename a VOB if you are going to play it in isolation but then the ripped files will not play as a DVD because the IFO files will refer to VOB files that no longer exist. You can also rename them to .mpg as they are encoded as MPEG2 anyway.

Hi,

Officialy DLNA on Sony Bravia TV supports the following video formats - AVCHD, HDV(MPEG2-TS), MPEG2-PS

To play DVD on my Bravia I rip my DVD into MPEG2-PS which is compatible with Sony Bravia. It is not re-encoded to different video format, just video track and selected audio+subtitles tracks are extracted from DVD, multiplexed and saved into single mpg file in MPEG-PS format, so it is quite fast process.

I'm linux user so I use the following tool for ripping DVD. It is written exactly for this purpose :-)

Success! :D

Finally got a video to appear on my Bravia 40W5500.

I've upgraded to TMS v5.1 which recognised my Bravia as a media receiver. I had to leave it overnight before the TMS symbol appeared as a video source on the Bravia cross bar. Then I had to convert a video to the MPEG format supported by the Bravia.

I would have hoped that the background transcoding in 5.1 would have dealt with this but it's a start.

Just tried an mpeg2-ts file and it does not show up on my Bravia. Only mpeg2 files are visible through TMS.

Used Sony Vaio Content Expoter to export as AVCHD format so should be compatible with Bravia

Hi Phil,

m2ts streaming to Sony Bravia is working perfectly fine with TMS 4.4.18 (or 17). But I'm not able to stream exactly the same files after upgrade to TMS 5.1. I had to downgrade back to 4.4.18 to be able to see my avchd videos from Canon HD camcorder :-(.

It would be worth comparing the clients.db entries that are being used by your Bravia by both versions.

For each version look on the clients page and see what the TV has been identified as. Then look at the details for each of those entries in the respective clients.db files. Maybe you'll be able to see a difference between the 4.x and 5.1 versions which will help to narrow down the problem. The 5.1 clients.db file can then be modified so that it has the correct details as per the 4.x file.

Hi PB,

thanks for the hint. With TMS 5.1 new client type "Sony Bravia" has been added by PV just for better experience on Bravia TVs.

on TMS 4.4.18 my TV is detected as Generic DLNA 1.5 client:

(from clients.db on 4.4.18):
NA:Generic DLNA 1.5
HH:DLNADOC/1.50
HP:chunked
XM:DLNA15
DB:AUTO

on TMS 5.1 my TV is recognized as Sony Bravia client:

(from clients.db on 5.1):
NA:Sony Bravia
HH:BRAVIA
XM:DLNA15
XM:BRAVIA_ROOT_DETECTION
TR:JPEG_TN,JPEG_HD
DB:FIX

In TMS 5.1 I tried to modify clients.db in order Sony Bravia client to have the same definitions as Generic DLNA 1.5 in 4.4.18, but without success... I tried also other predefined settings but still the same, still do not see any m2ts file on list in the TV...

I would like to know if PV have ever tested m2ts videos on TMS 5.1 and with Sony Bravia. I have DLNA certified TV and certified media server and it doesn't work together... :-(

Since not all Sony TVs have external control enabled, I thought I would make a post here about this.

A long list of Sony Bravia TVs including the KDL-32E5520 can be used with TwonkyMedia server or externally controlled using TwonkyMedia manager, TwonkyBeam or other Digital Media Controllers -- including some mobile phones.

You can view a list of Sony TVs which can be externally controlled here: http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 960#p21264

How to Enable External Control on Bravia TVs
Before you can externally controll them, you'll you toggle the Renderer Function on. To do this use your remote to navigate to Home, Settings, Network function, Renderer Function. Then toggle Renderer Function to 'On'. After you close and reopen your browser, your TV should appear in the devices section of TwonkyBeam. With TwonkyMedia manager, it should appear in the Play Here section in 30 seconds or less.

Now you can push local media to your TV using TwonkyMedia manager OR beam JPEGs, MP3s and MPEG video files from any Web page to your TV.

Hi.

My Sony Bravia TV can play MPEG2-TS on DLNA.
But to play MPEG2-TS on twonky needs customizing and playing is limited.

I found that my japanese Bravia support the following MPEG2-TS formats.

1. http-get:*:video/mpeg:DLNA.ORG_PN=AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3_ISO
2. http-get:*:video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts:DLNA.ORG_PN=MPEG_TS_JP_T
3. http-get:*:video/x-mp2t-mphl-188:*

The 2nd, that is SD, was not tested because I did not have any SD MPEG2-TS file.
The 1st and the 3rd are actually confirmed to work with my customized uShare.

I tried to set twonky to send the 1st but I gave up.
Then I tried the 3rd.
I appended a new line into clients.db, and It seemed to work fine.

NA:Sony Bravia
HH:BRAVIA
MT:ts,m2t video/x-mp2t-mphl-188
XM:DLNA15
XM:BRAVIA_ROOT_DETECTION
TR:JPEG_TN,JPEG_HD
DB:FIX

But I found that It cannot pause, rewind nor fast-forward on playing MPEG2-TS.
The reason is that twonky does not send most of all DLNA message (e.g. DLNA.ORG_OP=01) with the settings.

Please support to customize DLNA.ORG_PN message then I can set the 1st and my TV can play HD MPEG2-TS.
Or, could twonky support MPEG2-TS with Bravia, please?

Forgive my POOR english. :)

MPEG2-TS means MPEG2 Transport Stream format,
is not meaning transcodings to MPEG2.

I have not played any transcoded video on my KDL-40V5 yet because my NAS is powerless.
But it is no problem to play MPEG2-PS videos, such as *.mpg files.

I am talking about playing MPEG2-TS, such as *.ts files, with no transcoding.

Setting MIME types to "video/x-mp2t-mphl-188" causes the problems, I know.
But on other settings I cannot play *.ts files.
To be solved, official support is needed, I think.

Has anyone had any sucess at streaming .mts files to their Bravia? I have a Sony HD video camcorder and have just downloaded the content to my server. All the raw HD video files have .mts file extension.

They play great in Media Player 12 on Windows 7 but I cannot get to see them on the Bravia. I Googled .mts and the results say they are AVCHD which is one of the formats supported by the Bravia.

Could it be that Twonky is not streaming them to the TV?? I currently have transcoding turned off as I did not think I needed it for my vidoes which are primarily .vob or .mpg files and all playing well.

Using :
Twonky Media Server 6.0 beta 605 on Mac OSX Snow Leopard
Sony Bravia KDL-40HX700

I could test and get working few things:

With the following update from @kryo : Adding "MT:ts,m2t video/x-mp2t-mphl-188" in clients.db for the Sony BRAVIA as worked as he explained, can see the video in the tree and good playback but no navigation (pause, forward or backward)

I've compressed my file with ffmpeg as follow :

ffmpeg -threads 2 -i DivX_TV_promo.mkv -vcodec libx264 -vpre slow_firstpass -b 7500k -refs 1 -bf 3 -acodec libfaac -ac 2 output_file.ts

I've made few extra tests and it appears that the TV support much more formats that I can read only from USB key so far as twonky media server doesn't show them in the file tree.

I could verify :

MPEG
MPEG2
MPEG4 (H264) compressed with mpeg streamclip
DivX compressed with DivX Converter from divx.com

I really hope to be able to see this formats directly served by twonky media server. If I can be any help to Twonky team please do not hesitate to let me know.

Hope this helps Bravia owners,

Hi, I got a Bravia KDL-32EX707, haven't been able to browse any kind of files (not even jpg, mpeg-2, mp3) from my TV. It recognizes the server, but all I got is a "there are no items to display" error.

What can I do to fix this?

I've tried with another server, Playback from Yazsoft, it recognizes my folders and plays just fine the Bravia's DLNA supported formats, but I would like to transcode from another formats, just as Twonky seems to do it.

OSX 10.5. PowerMac G5. TMS 6 and 6.0.1 RC9

Hi, I can see and play video files on TMS v.6.0 using a PS3, although i get the 'there are no items to display' message browsing to the same location directly on the Bravia, TMS correctly recognises both the PS3 & Bravia as media receivers
Video files have a MP4 extension, ripped with Handbrake V. 0.9.4
Any ideas?

Whatever happened to BRAVIA_ROOT_DETECTION. It now says discontinued in the clients.db and seems to have no effect when I try and use it. Used to work really well, didn't have to go through an extra layer of folders to get to music/videos/pics etc.

Hi hpras

I think there was a bug in it which has never been resolved. The problem was when you changed the sort menu under the Bravia Options from z>a to a>z or other combination. You then lost access to the video folder. I raised this with technical support and their response was to remove BRAVIA_ROOT_DETECTION from the config file.

Like you under each of the Bravia cross bar options you get all three links under a specific media type i.e.under Video you get, pictures, music and video, under pictures you get pictures, music and video . Its a bit of a pain but has not been corrected. On a lot of other forums people are moving away from twonky and using PS3 MediaServer, miniDLNA, Wild Media Server, Serviio or others. These all seem to have better support and development path.
Have a look at the Bravia W5500 thread over at AV Forums http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-led- ... ility.html. theres a lot of useful information.
Frankly I have just bought a Dune Base 3.0 and it streams any video content I can throw at it. I have left Twonky running on my Windows Home Server as it works fine for jpegs, straight forward MPEG2 and MKV files from my Sony HD camcorder.
