Audio-out disabled on tv with Twonky, but not with ReadyDLNA

Hi,

I am trialing Twonky on my Readynas Duo.

It is great so far because it picks up all of my media files on the ReadyNas, where ReadyDLNA (the built it streaming service) doesnt.

However, 2 things that unfortunatly dont seem to work, and i can find any conclusive answers about:

1. The Twonky media service, when streaming to my LG LD690 tv, seems to disable sound output via optical. I can hear it click off on the amp/speakers when I launch Twonky DLNA from the tv. ReadyDLNA, however, doesnt do this, and allows me to play vidoes through my amp and speakers. Odd.

2. The USB HDD attached to my ReadyNAS has it's share in the root of the readynas, but twonkymedia server starts it directory for files from root\media. I have seen the option to change this in the twonky .ini file, but I have a permission error when i try to change it. If i RPC into it (not done that before, but i could try) would i be able to change it to the root, and would it then be able to see the USB HDD shared on the readynas?

Thanks!

We don't have any way to disable the digital outs on your TV, that seems like an issue with your TV to me.

god that was a nightmare. I had to register again coz I couldn't get back in. Gash.

Anyways. thanks for getting back to me. I am the guy that posted above.

The thing is, nothing has changed between using the two streaming services, the same files, folders and shares, the same wiring and setup for the ReadyNas, the only difference is the ReadyDLNA streaming service and the Twonky Media service.

No files play through the TV optical out with Twonky. All files that I play with ReadyDLNA do output audio via optical out.

Therefore the problem must be with the way the TV interprets the streaming service. The stream must be different in some way (I am not technical enough to know how it might differ or if it does). Therefore I have to conclude that the issue is not with the TV but with the difference in the stream being fed to it, as that is the only thing that is different between the two situations.

Awww man. I ballsed up with this thread. I have done some more testing and it turns out i was talking cack.

I better set the record straight, and explain why I WILL now be buying a license for Twonky Media for my ReadyNas as soon as the trials up.

Also, the info, although not much use in this Netgear forum, might help someone with TV issues.

I have found that the DAC converter I am using from the optical out on my LD LD690 TV does not support DOLBY. Video files encoded with mp3 audio tracks play fine. DOLBY encoded audio video files don't

Twonky works fine.

Thanks for your time. Sorry for the red herring.

Have a good day.

Cheers.

Just bought the license. And loving 6.0.34. I had 5.1.5 before. I didn't realise there was a 6.0.34 - which is much better!

How come there is no mention of the ReadyNas AddOn on the Twonky Media website? I wasn't sure I was even buying the right license, until I put it in and it worked.

All Twonked up now 8)

I'm such a klutz!

Found I can switch TV optical output to 'PCM' rather than 'Auto' - now I ahve two channel audio out from my TV for all my DOLBY encoded files! Great news for us with 2 channel amps. And here was me looking for external 5.1 DACs, that don't exist, other than strange chinese types from ebay that I wouldn't like to have replace my current 2 channel DAC.

I am SORTED!

Can't believe I didn't work all this out previously. I don't usualy fail that easily.

Hi

The answer to setting that easily is that you can do it (in a few seconds) via a web browser by making what's called an RPC call; Twonky will then add it to the ini file for you (and a Twonky restart will pick it up). I have written a post about doing this on a ReadyNAS and also a Qnap (click here). There are a few other useful ones that I've mentioned here. Note that the cache location one refers to a Qnap (so the path will be different) but the call works on any device.

ok, copied this into chrome: http://192.168.96.22:9000/rpc/set_option?contentbase=/

received a timeout page, i assume this is normal. Server appeared to restart , as it started rebuilding its database (as usual on a twonky server restart on readynas, right?)

Now, do i need to redirect all content directories to /media/videos, /media/music?
..becuase it seems to still be finding the files again, which i'm guessing it shouldnt be able to as they are all set by default in the twonky configuration settings to /videos, /music.

..anyways. My USB HDD attached to my ReadyNAS appears with the share name 'USB_HDD_1', therefore, since doing the RPC call, I am adding a new directory to twonky server on the NAS in the directory /USB_HDD_1/Videos (where the videos are on my usb hdd).

I theory, if the rpc call was successful, twonky will pick up these file.

Is there any way i can check if the rpc call was successful?

Thanks for your help!

aww, still didnt work : # for Linux/NAS systems this is the basedirectory used for content sharing (prepended to all shares)
contentbase=/c/media/

also tried this: http://192.168.1.254:9000/rpc/set_optio ... .168.1.254

.254 being my NAS ip.

Still get two ips in the server - 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.2.254

Not sure i know quite how to issue these rpcs :\

YES!

You are watching the ramblings of a nooby twaat.

I just had the ip address wrong, again. Sorted.

For the noobs: The rpc call is successful when you see the IP address written in small text in the browser window. Double check the ip address. ;)

Will post my results... if anyone is still reading my crap

now my ini file states: # for Linux/NAS systems this is the basedirectory used for content sharing (prepended to all shares)
contentbase=/

so do i set my basic shares to:

/media/music

OR

/c/media/music

?

Thanks!

So i only need to share using /media/music - it find the files then.

but if i try to share the USB_HDD_1, it is slow slow to scan, and then it crashes. The NAS didnt even respond to holding the power button and I had to hard reset.

I think i'll forget trying to dlna my usb drive through the NAS. Unless anyone esle has had any luck.

Happy with it anyway. I'll just save up for some 2tb drives instead of the 1ners.
