I see there is a new 5.0.65 Server release.
Is there any plugin / utility available to install it on the ReadyNas Duo?

Hi
Not yet I'm afraid. I'm thinking that PV might release 5.0.66 at some stage and we might get NAS versions for that one, however, the one I'm really interested in is 5.1. It's probably better that they are focusing on 5.1 as opposed to bringing out NAS versions of 5.0.x as it'll be outdated soon anyway.
In case you are not aware of this, Twonky 5.0.xx creates a very big database and locates it in the ReadyNAS OS area. To overcome this, there is a version of Twonky 5.0.55 available on the ReadyNAS forum
(click here) which relocates the database to /c/webroot/Twonky/db.
You still need SSH access to delete the contents of the /c/webroot/Twonky/db/default.view directory before doing a database rebuild though (The NAS versions of Twonky 5.0.5x archive the previous database before building the new one so unless you delete it before rebuilding, you'll end up with several massive databases).
Hope that makes sense, if not please ask.

Hi Briain,
this "feature" is now available for the windows version also. Have tested TMM 1.2 beta2 with server 6.0.66 RC-2 and it creates those archived databases (.old) now at each rebuild.

Thanks, I was not aware.
I have been using Twonky products for > 5 years and I have to say that sometimes I am wondering what is the rationale behind some decisions.
For example, I still don't understand the reasons why Twonky/PV removed the simple Tree design utility (in the config) that was very simple to use, it was also a clear differentiator vs. competition, and replaced it with a XML definition on the basis that the utility was too complex....
now we have a XML design based that only few can play with (and I am not one of the few even if I used to be a software engineer > 10 years ago).
Sense and Simplicity is what customers are after.

Hi
The database structure in TMS5 is entirely different to that of 4. It looks like the database's very structure is decided by what is in the xml file (or files). The trouble with the new database and a ReadyNAS is that it creates a metafile for each media file and creates a directory structure as complex as the media directory structure. For 16,000 flac files, the database comprises tens of thousands of files in tens of thousands of directories. Whilst this is fine(ish) for a NTFS partition, ReadyNAS uses a disk format based on 16k block sizes; this translates to my database being 2.9 Gigs! I believe this is to be addressed soon but even in its current form, you can use it provided you use the Netgear forum version which relocates locates the files.
My thoughts are that a good and easy compromise would be for PV to bundle something like the tree I have created
(see here) and perhaps have the options to change (or remove) the alpha-grouping from the web interface, or even dissable entire blocks of the code. I'd have thought that this would be a relatively easy thing to do as it would only entail changing numbers and disabling lines in an existing supplied code (as opposed to writing blocks of code to suit new trees).
Just a thought

5.0.55 - 5.0.65; which files have changed? (Duo & NV+ questi

Hi
I assume that the ReadyNAS build is derived from the Linux SPARC glibc 2.3.2 build? If so, we should be able to figure out which files were updated between 5.0.55 and 5.0.61 then 5.0.65 (I'd guess that it's not many that have changed). I'd have thought that we could then copy the changed files from the 5.0.65 Linux SPARC glibc 2.3.2 package and use them to replace the corresponding 5.0.55 files on the ReadyNAS.
Assuming it's only a couple of files and that the concept is viable, it should only take a minute to over write them using SSH access. Anyone have any thoughts on any of this?

Well, I just downloaded the Linux SPARC glibc 2.3.2 build and put the
twonkymediaserver file on my ReadyNAS Duo media share (in a directory called
a on the media share of my ReadyNAS).
I then ran
killall -s TERM twonkymedia to stop Twonky
I then deleted the database directory contents from /webroot/Twonky/db/xxxx.view (xxxx determined by tree name) as replacing the above file will force a database rebuild (I found that out on my test NAS).
I then typed
cp -i /media/a/twonkymediaserver /usr/local/TwonkyVision/ (and then
y to confirm I wanted to over write the existing file).
Restarted my NAS immediately selected a database rebuild; it now claims to have Twonky 5.0.65 running.
Not sure if anything else has changed but that file was different from the 5.0.55 ones (it was bigger) and my NAS still works so there you go; it has even updated the twonkymedia-server.ini file text to 5.0.65 too! I'll check the rest later to see if any others have changed, however, changing this file in isolatuion certainly hasn't broken anything
The file is attached below to save you having to find it yourselves
Bri
PS Also done my NV+ now and it's rebuilding the database as I type.
Update: Same process but now 5.0.68 is available; post
here. I've removed the 5.0.65 from this post to save wasting space on the forum server.

Hi
All seems well. As I say, you need to delete the old database (as you would do before any TMS 5.0.xx full database rebuild) as it kicks one off anyway.
It works well and I've not noticed any difference. I think 5.0.65 is meant to handle non 160x160 art better but since mine is all 160x160 anyway, I can see no difference at all. I just did it to keep my on the latest version that works (no response about 5.1 CPU use yet).
So yes, it all works fine by just stopping Twonky and over writing the single file. It even updates the ini file (which now says 5.0.65). Whether it's worth doing or not is debatable; I can't detect any difference but others might.
The main thing is that it works, music still plays and there are not thick black clouds of smoke bellowing out of the vents in my ReadyNAS, so it’s definitely cool to try it if you wish to.

I can confirm that version 5.0.65 solves the coverart pixelation issue. Database is still messy but in total this is superior to version 5.0.55
Given that version 5.1.08, called "release candidate" by the Twonky-folks, is still more of an "early alpha", version 5.0.65 is the one to go for for the more experimantal users not fearing away from using SSH from time to time to get it up and running.

Update: Another good reason for 5.0.65 over 5.0.55: Library rescan works much more reliable as well!

Hi
Yes, I've been running it on a ReadyNAS NV+ since my above post (on updating the twonkymediaserver file) and it all seems very stable.

Brian,
I have an NV+ and don't seem to be able to locate the directories you listed above when copying the twonkeymediaserver file. Are they different for the NV+ over the PRO?

Hi
I'd expect that the PRO could be different; I've never seen one so can't really say. The installation of 5.0.55 I have is the Super-Poussin one from the community addons section of the ReadyNAS forum (called Twonky 1.5). This is for NV+ and Duo and it relocates both the database and cache files safely in a new directory (/webroot/Twonky) however, even with the SP build, the main server file should be in the usual place as described above (/usr/local/TwonkyVision/) so I'm surprised you can't spot it. Do you see any reference to a Twonky directory when you navigate into /usr/local and run ls to list the contents?

1. Briain, have you already tried 5.1 on the ReadyNas? Any feedback from anyone?
2. I think Mr super poussin has already made a script to install 5.1, where can I find it? Is it ReadyNas duo compatible?
Regards,
Francis

Hi Francis
I think he maybe has tried it but so far without success. I've given it a go, but I just gave up after a while too. To be honest, it doesn't yet suit my needs due to it not recognising the tree order and I need to do some more experimenting to find an elegant way round that (it looks really crap having to number all the containers; particularly when you have more than 9 of them and thus need to use double numbers to sort them out).
Super-poussin has posted a really hot version of 5.0.68 on the ReadyNAS forum though. It has the Twonky files visible as a share on the ReadyNAS, and also has the trees (/views) showing in that share so people can change them without needing to use SSH access and Linux (it comes with the standard tree as written by PV). It also has exceptionally really low resource use, it doesn't re-scan the media on restart and the cache reports correctly). I think a few other things have maybe been sorted (I don't know) as it seems to work really well.
I have also sent a tree for an alternative one he's building to better suit Linn DS users (to save them having to map drives and replace trees etc). This is a music only tree (no pictures or videos) designed to suit music collectors with large music collections (copy below).
I think he is looking at 5.1, but I'm sticking to 5.0.68 for now as it does exactly what I need it to do. The download of the fixed ReadyNAS one is available here
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic ... 47&t=20375
There will soon also be an alternative add-on which includes the tree in place of the original (tree also attached below):
Bri
Update: Revised (I think better) versions and descriptions now posted in the tree section
here. The revised versions combine both features from the ones below.

Thanks.
My ReadyNas Duo is running for more than a year now without any problem hence I never bothered to go to the Forum or to the Netgear site.
I see that the 5.0.68 is made for the Sparc machine. Is my ReadyNas Duo a SPARC machine?

Hi
It seems that 4.4.11 occasionally causes a problem but there have been a good few failures with 4.4.15 and 4.4.17. It looks like in all these cases, something is totally filling up the OS area and thus the NAS can't function. It's probably related to the quantity of media you have and thus also the size of things like the cache folder, but I've never seen a broken one myself. The reports are that Netgear have managed to remote access a few and delete 'loads of files created by Twonky' but that's a bit too vague to be of any use to us; I wish the information had been a bit more 'granular' in its nature so we could try to work out what's going wrong.
The builds
here relocate all these files somewhere safe so they should save us any problems going forward. As you correctly assume, the Duo and NV+ builds constructed by super-poussin are based on the Linux sparc releases of Twonky. The Duo and NV use sparc processors but the new Pro is an x86 based architecture (it's still a Linux OS though).
Bri
PS Ignore the below tree; I've put it here for someone to download and test with an iPhone app / Linn DS. It's the same as the one above but without any alpha-grouping (and han't been tested properly yet)

Hi
I've just updated the specialist music only tree for Twonky 5.0.XX and posted two versions of it
here. I've also just revised the description so that it now almost makes sense.
