Hi there,
i have a WDC MyBook World Edition and use it for streaming Videos to Windows 7 (Windows Mediaplayer 12) machines with Twonky. The Problem I have is this:
Playing MKV locally works with Haali Mediasplitter. Once on the NAS, the files are shown in Twonky/Mediaplayer, but Mediaplayer says, it can't play the video because of unknown Fileformat. I tried a lot, including setting Twonky's database to the mime-type x-matroska and several other types. None of them worked. To find out if Twonky actually streams the video I used VLC Mediaplayer, and opened the network stream with the networkaddress of the video, copied from Mediaplayer. VLC plays the video.
Can someone help me with this problem? If i can't stream mkv's Twonky is useless for me and I have to find another streaming solution, which I want to avoid.
Thank You
Streaming MKV to Mediaplayer (Twonky, WMP12, MKV)

TwonkyServer streams many types of MKV files without problems. Most playback issues are the result of the client and not the server. I'd suggest you first find a good music player client that can play MKV files that are streamed via UPnP. Streamed playback is different than local playback.

Hi,
thank you for your answer. My problem is how to find a good mediaplayer for windows. Usually i preffer VLC, but it cannot act as a twonky client (discovering the mediafiles), but it plays the streams if i give it a proper adress.
Can you or someone tell me a good client for windows?
What is so different, i thougt if wmp plays a format (e.g. mkv) then it should do this even when it gets streamed...
Sincerely Thomas

I don't use MKV files so I can't tell you who makes the best client for these. Hopefully someone else will respond here with a suggestion for you.

That doesn't matter, thank you for your answer, but I still wonder where's the difference for Media Player, because the codec works on local files...

There is a difference between local file playback and streaming using from a media server using UPnP.
