SOLUTION INSIDE: Twonky + Mac + PS3

Post by rwestwood » Sat Aug 04, 2007 11:47 pm

Hello - I thought I would post my findings about using Twonky, a Mac and a PS3 to stream content from my hard drive. I know a lot of people have had problems with this but I have things working perfectly now so thought I would share my experiences.

-Use wired connections if possible
If possible, plug the PS3 in via a wired connection. If you're running your server from a Mac Mini or an iMac, use wired too. I personally use wired for the PS3 and wireless from my Macbook and have only very small waiting times for buffering of files.

-If wireless is chosen for PS3...
Check your internet settings on the PS3 and look for signal strength. Many users have complained about the poor signal quality they are getting from their PS3 even in the same room as the router. If you have a low signal, log into your router and change the wireless channel from the default of 11. In my tests this increased the signal strength from 70% to 95%.

-Use manual IP addresses, not DHCP
This solved a LOT of my problems. For some reason unknown to me, the PS3 only detects the server properly if the IP address of the server is lower than that of the PS3. Change your router settings to use manual IP addresses and set the server to 192.168.2.2 (or whatever your network is running on) and the PS3 to something high - 192.168.2.10 or so.

-Tell Twonky where the server IP address is
Within Twonky settings, there is an option to give the server IP address should you be using fixed settings. Fill this section in - this is important.

-Restart on NIC changes
VERY important. For some reason, again I do not know why, Twinky will not work with Parallels for Mac UNLESS you DISABLE this setting. It seems good practice to disable this anyway.

You can set the shares up as you wish and fiddle around with the folder settings.

RECAP:
-Server: 192.168.2.2
-PS3: 192.168.2.10
-Check PS3 wireless signal and channel
-NIC restart: DISABLED
-Server IP input into Twonky settings

I am now sitting here watching DVD quality films over my network onto my flatscreen and could not be happier.

Cheers

Hmm, I followed your advise, except to connect with wires, since that's not really an option at the time. But I still can't get it to work.. I showed up once on my PS3 and I was actually able to start playback of a movie file, but it was interrupted after about 20 seconds with a message saying that the PS3 was disconnected...

I can't seem to specify a manual IP adress for the Twonky Server. Should I enter the same IP as the Mac is using? (in this case 192.168.0.2)?? When I do that, or if I set it to 192.168.0.3, it still shows up empty in the settings after I restarted the Twonky server.

Could you please help me out here?

I have now made some progress, but the problem is now this:

My TwonkyMedia-server is available from my PS3, but exactly once every minute, it disconnects, and then connects again immediatly. This means it aborts my movie playback and everything.

I have timed it to be exactly after one minute each time. What could be the cause of this you think?

I would be very grateful for some help here.

Ok, another progress. I turned on the logging on the Twonkyserver, and I seem to be getting the following error, every minute:
[ERROR]HTTP:Cannot receive header
HTTP:received no header in HTTP_send_receive, propably client closed socket!
HTTP:GET /DeviceDescription.xml HTTP/1.1
Host: 192.168.0.2:9000

Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2007 22:23:33 GMT
User-Agent: UPnP/1.0
X-AV-Client-Info: av=5.0; cn="Sony Computer Entertainment"; mn="PLAYSTATION3"; mv="1.0";
Can anyone please help me understand what this means?

Julbingo,

If the IP address of your Mac is 192.168.0.2, then in the Twonky settings, put the address of the server as the same thing. Press save and restart. Also make sure the NIC changes tickbox is not selected.

Give me your Skype or MSN address via PM if you need more help.

Hello again. I now suddenly have it working.. sometimes. It seems to be a bit intermittent. Right now I have the problem that I can't configure Twonkymedia anymore, it just says connection error in my browser when i go to: http://127.0.0.1:9000/setup.htm. I worked before I changed the servers IP to be the same as my iMac.

Any ideas?

My Skype id is: kungsholmsgatan

Use http://192.168.0.2:9000 or whatever the IP address of your Mac is.

Many many thanks! Now it does work! Now I guess I have to figure out how the folder-structures works... :)

I am having the same issue with the PS3 disconnecting

Post by eleven357 » Fri Aug 10, 2007 10:53 pm

I am running twonky 4.4 on Fedora 7 and I am having issues with my PS3 disconnecting. Every minute it disconnects me from the media server. The PS3 firmware is ver 1.90. I had an older version of twonky 3.x before running on fedora core 4 with no issues at all. I have read through several forums of people who had similar issues, but I have tried everything to no avail. Here is the error i keep getting which i think might have something to do with the disconnect:

I would really appreciate a response about this. FYI The firmware on the PS3 has been at 1.90 since ive had it so I have eliminated that from the equation.

(3 hours Later)

--FIXED! After hours of frustration of investigating possible causes of this issue, I forgot the first fix for network connectivity, the reboot. After rebooting my Fedora 7 box, the disconnect issue was no longer present. So thats what I get for overanalyzing this problem. Just thought I would post this to save someone a lot of time. :)

I'm really glad to hear this. You may need an mpg converter, if so use iSquint (freeware and easy).

Folder structures are a bit iffy, not 100% happy with the way it all works myself, but I think it's more customisable than I realise!

Actually, I'm kind of frustrated about the folder structure! I can't seem to understand how i works... And I can't find any guide out there either.. Is it possible to have different folders for different video-shares? I have one folder on my Mac with recorded TV-shows, and another with converted movies. Can I somehow share those in two different folders in Twonky?

I my ISP uses DHCP and I don't have a static IP address for my Mac, then I guess I can't NOT use DHCP? Unless I wanna go into Twonky settings every time my Mac IP address gets changed by my ISP?

Static addresses for lan/wlan, not wan.

PS3 + Mac + Apple AirportExtreme router -- PS3 disconnecting

Post by csjasona » Sun Feb 17, 2008 5:28 pm

Hi

The PS3 is disconnecting at random times from the Twonly server. The PS3 doesn't have problems with my wiFi for normal web access or accessing the PlayStation network-- only for the Twonky stuff.

Anyone got full step-by-step instructions to follow, esp. for the DHCP/non-DHCP stuff?

Gents,

Just found an interesting symptom. Aside from hard coding the ip address into the TwonkyVision .ini file... I switched the PS3 to use the ethernet cable, instead of wireless.

Things now certainly move much better! :)

Awesome product
