... asking for someone to try the CS406 build on another model with the same chipset as your 408. There was no reply.

Both sets of installers work flawlessly with the current Synology firmware. Just follow the instructions. Having said that watch out for the difference between "admin" and "root" users in your Synology config. You only have to do this once and its been so long that I don't remember the details now.
I only have a DS207+ so I don't know for sure. But if you were to try the CS406 and/or CS406e builds one of them might work. I suspect that both would work but one may be quicker than the other. You get a few weeks to try them out without requiring a license.
