Twonkyvision versus internal Mediaserver on Maxtor SS+

Post by AverageGuy » Sun Nov 05, 2006 11:58 am

Hello Forum,
I just got started with a MSS+/Noxon2 setup (PC: WinXP) using the internal MSS+ mediaserver. Things that bug me:
  • - "Hardwired" automatic rescan for new files every few hours
    - Updated ID Tags are only recognized by removing file, scanning DB, moving file back and scanning again
    - Only rudimentary setup options for folders to scan
    - No setup options for filetypes to scan/serve
Besides that, the PC-independent streaming works fine.

Would my situation improve if I used the Twonkyvision Media Server? How? Drawbacks? What do you recommend?

Thanks for suggestions,
Ian

MSS+ media server

Post by Kos » Sun Nov 05, 2006 5:59 pm

A couple of my friends have installed Twonky on their MSS+ And now they both have broken down. So for now I live with the faults of the embedded media server. It has worked for me for six months now so....

I have e-mailed the two most annoying problems to Maxtor (Seagate), meaning the automatic refresh every two hours and the painstaking job of getting the IDtags updated. They have no solution for now.

Twonky is running fine and without any problems on my MSS+. Never had any problems (for more than six months now).
Imho the internal server is nothing compared to Twonky.

I voted for Twonky mostly for better sorting of tracks.

The embedded doesen't give you many choices.

Have now switched to Twonky but not that impressed

My old embedded MSS server might have been simple and slow bit it worked. After switching to Twonky 2.6.6 I am no longer able to jump/search a single track (I have 11.000) or album (I have 950) - it seems the server can't handle it? But it handles artist search where the number is smaller. I'm going back to the embedded one because this functionality is essential for me.

Everything works now....

Changing file names beginning with strange characters solved the problems!

GREAT!

And the rescanning is now done in less than 30 seconds. With more than 10.000 tracks I'm really impressed. The embedded MSS+ media server took several minutes and made a lot more scan noise. A LOT MORE.

Files beginning with the character " disables sorting.

after reading good reviews from fellow mss+ users, I am encouraged to have it installed soon.
