QNAP TS-101 New Firmware Twonky 4.3

Post by ffejie » Tue May 22, 2007 8:37 pm

I just emailed back and forth with someone from QNAP and they are saying they're going to go to Twonky 4.3 with their latest firmware. Hopefully they can put this in place fairly quickly -- without 4.3, my Xbox 360 is out of commission.

In the meantime -- I was wondering -- why can't I install Twonky myself on the QNAP? Is it locked in someway? Why do other NAS' have an install exe, but not QNAP TS-101? I know I'd probably have to buy Twonky, instead of getting it inherently as part of QNAP, but I don't have a problem with that if I can get the latest Twonky without waiting for QNAP to come up to speed.

You can probably download the 'T' (telnet-enabled) TS-101 firmware and install the appropriate twonky from the command line, just as if you were installing it on any Linux box.

The 'T' firmware is available on QNAP's website.

I have telnet access to my QNAP, but for whatever reason I can't get Twonky to install. I'm not great with Linux so it's probably my undoing.

First off, I can't uninstall the old version of Twonky 4.2Q (although I can terminate the server). Secondly, I get an error about an unexpected "(" in the generic Linux install script. I'm going to take the next two weeks or so and give this another go, but I figured I would see if anyone else has already been successful installing 4.3 on QNAP TS-101.

In my limited experience with Qnap I'd leave it alone until it's sorted and tested. Their software is a pile of shite and access to the firmware difficult at the best of times. I'd wait until they drag themselves kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. I bought their 100 unit and a 400GB HDD, cost me £200 in total and I'm sucking up big hairy balls atm trying to get my Soundbridge to talk to the NAS without the computer.

Stay well clear.

Yesterday I made a successful install of Twonky 4.3 on my QNAP TS201. It's up and running! :) Since I don't have a licence for Twonky it's only the 30-day trial, so I guess I'll reinstall the QNAP firmware with Twonky 4.2 anyway. Still, it's possible, and we all want to do the possible, right? 8)

Hey Zooman, can you please tell us how to upgrade TS to latest TV firmware. I have no experience with Liniux.

Thanks!
