Cannot Access Settings Tab - Password popup request fails

I tried to enable the Multi User page and set password for admin so that only guests could use this.
I have no idea what has happened but I can no longer access this page or any other of the settings.
When I try I get repeated requests for Username and Password but none of those I used work. I can log into my NAS and access Twonky Server video, music and photo but not the settings tab.
How can I reset the setting login and how should I proceed to avoid in future?
