Western Digital My Book World Edition problems

Post by monty77 » Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:11 pm

Hi all,

I have the white light edition of the WD NAS, running latest firmware with TM version 5.1.

On the PS3 I get random lockups when skipping through media files of various types, HD material seems particularly bad for some reason.

My network is Gigabit ethernet so throughput / ping times are excellent otherwise.

I suspected it might be 5.1 to blame so I installed 5.1.3 on my iMac and sure enough the PS3 no longer has the lockups I see when streaming from the WD unit running 5.1.

Does anyone know if I can update 5.1 to 5.13 myself on the WD? I dont even mind paying for a 'proper' license, I just need it to work !!

Cheers,
Monty

Monty77,

I have 1tb white lite with twonky v5.1, plus wrtn160n linksys router.

Also noticed same issues during wireless streaming after update, plus more issues when Mac device connected wirelessly.

I had absolutely no issues with Ethernet Connection between ps3 and router and MyBook.

Decided to trade linksys in for Gigabit Router from Apple.com.

Issues seem to be completely resolved. Now I'm able to stream more than video to more than one device simultaneously without any issues whatsoever.

Also, able to download and upload at max capacity from internet without any twonky media streaming issues.

I believe the Dual Band Gigabyte Router made a difference, allowing traffic to move thru different bands thus limiting traffic collision.

BTW, N devices are configured to access on 5Gz band.

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I also have the Apple dual band gigabit router, great bit of kit, however I'm still getting what I describe above. As far as I can make out it _has_ to be twonky if the new version hosted on the Mac works fine - unless the WD has some performance issues of it's own when streaming HD content.

At the moment I'm seriously considering dumping the WD and just running TM on the iMac, bit of a pain as I'll have to keep it running all of the time but I need to have a reliable solution, driving me nuts :)

Cheers!
Monty
