Looks interesting, thanks, is it downloadable on their website or can it be done directly from the Noxon ?

Noxon new Firmware - I tried it

Post by JoHe » Sat Dec 02, 2006 4:43 pm

I downloaded and installed the new firmware on my Noxon2. So far it works well with Twonky running on an ASUS WL-HDD. Here are my observations while playing around with it (just mp3 files, no other formats).

Twonky-related:

- I had to upgrade Twonky from 3.1 to 4.1, because with the new Noxon FW the tracks of each CD were sorted alphabetically. Some other users have reported this earlier in the forum, without any solution afaik. I didn't have this problem with the old FW. After upgrading to Twonky 4.1 all tracks appear as stored on CD and in the directory.

- TwonkyVISION 4.1 eats too many resources on my ASUS WL-HDD and crashes. That is in spite of having a large swapfile. :-/ I therefore had to install TwonkyMUSIC instead which works well.

Noxon FW installation:

- I haven't played with the WIFI options for long since my Noxon2 is hard wired to my network. But here are some hints.

- The FW update only works via WLAN, not ethernet. I can't really appreciate this since WLAN transmission can be disrupted easily and I don't know what would happen to your FW update in such a case? Anyway, it worked well and took only ca. 5 minutes.

- To get the whole thing started your WLAN has to be detected by the Noxon2 and therefore the SSID must not be hidden.

- Setting IP and password phrase is very easy.

Noxon FW handling:

- No documentation comes with the new FW, just a six page install instruction. That's really a pitty!

- The new Podcast feature is *brillant*! You have to try it to believe it. It's superb! I only wonder how often the podcast list is updated? There's no documentation on this. The only drawback I found so far: Podcasts can't be bookmarked as favourites.

- The clock display shows up after some idle time. It's a really big and shiny clock, I wonder if everybody wants to have such a big digital clock shining in their livingrooms. An option to switch to an analog clock display would be neat, also an option for additionally displaying day and date.

- Normal automatic scrolling of titles has become worse; it's flickering and almost unreadable now. :-/

- Title display not only shows the played time but also the total track length now. This also works with variable bitrate files. A very welcomed feature, I really missed it!

- Also current time and date are now shown on the display while music is playing. Well done!

- The display switches to big title scrolling mode while playing music, either with the "i"-key or per default after some seconds. It's very well readable even by the nearly blind and even from a far distance. In my opinion the letters could be smaller. The scrolling is veeeeery slow. If some of your track titles are long, you have to wait a while... If you dislike this new feature you can switch back to the old displaying mode with the "i"-button, but then readability of scrolling titles decreases (s.a.).

--------

My personal overall conclusion: The FW upgrade was worth the efforts!

Have fun. JoHe

Thanks for all these details, looks like it's worth trying, especially since they seem to have support for FLAC too now.

A few things:
1. I upgraded to TwonkyMusic v4.1 too, but it seems Noxon users have to pay for it past the 30 day trial ? A bit annoying considering it fixes the bugs of the 3.0 Terratec version we got ?

2. I didn't realize you could run Twonky Music from the WL-HDD, that's the 2.5DD Wifi enclosure right ? I'll need to fig out mine !

Troubles connecting to Noxon

Post by trolitax » Sun Dec 03, 2006 7:59 pm

I can see the Noxon2 in my network devices, but when I start the Noxon Audio Manager it doesn't find the device so I can't update the firmware.

Any suggestions??

New Noxon2 Firmware

Post by JoHe » Mon Dec 04, 2006 1:00 am

to yellow1:

1: Immediately after having received my Noxon2 I decided to purchase the full Twonky with lifetime support, because a) it's not expensive and b) I wanted to appreciate the programmers' work.

2: For installing twonky on a WL-HDD ake a close look at http://www.sprayfly.com/wiki/Sprayfly - you'll find every information on this excellent homepage.

to trolitax:

How is your Noxon2 connected to your network? It must be a WLAN connection, otherwise it won't work. Another issue might be to switch off all antivirus and firewall programs.

Noxon new Firmware - I tried it - part 2

Post by JoHe » Mon Dec 04, 2006 1:03 am

Some new experiences with the new Noxon2 firmware:

Strange things happened today.

When I switched on my Noxon2 with its new FW, it showed the usual "Noxon" on its display for a long time and didn't appear to go any further. Then the scriptum "Noxon" started to scroll... Nothing else happened. I switched the device off with the power button on top of the case. After that my Noxon2 seemd to work as usual.

But now the new clock feature wouldn't turn on and couldn't be switched on by pressing the "i"-button either. Time and date showing up in play mode were yesterday's time and date! After some minutes without any automatic time update I decided to do a soft reset by holding down the remote control's power button for some seconds. After rebooting the Noxon2 showed the correct and current date / time again. Strange behaviour...

I wish I knew how Noxon2 gets the actual time and date. Also I wish there was some documentation on how often podcasts are updated. Could it be you have to leave it powered on all the time? Can you set any time or podcast servers?? Is anybody from Terratec here and able to give us those informations?

But with the new firmware its not more working, it says not found.

Can u check this out and tell me more, how I can play internet radio links from an USB stick?

With the Noxon2 you should have gotten a coupon on the CD case. If you add this when ordering Twonky its worth a 10 Euro discount, which makes the upgrade cost tiny.

Got the Firmware Update working

Post by trolitax » Fri Dec 08, 2006 11:31 pm

After wasting a lot of hours trying to upload the new firmware I called the Terratec service.
They told me to install the new Noxon Audio Manager v3.xx which comes with the firmware and connect the Noxon via LAN direct to the router.
So I installed the new software, connected the Noxon via Lan, but still got no access through the Noxon Manager.
After a while I discovered that I have to uninstall the old Noxon Audio Manager (v2.6.9) before installing the new version.
After doing this I got the firmware update working via LAN.

With the new firmware I have the same strange behavior of the clock. Very often I have only the Noxon Logo and no clock, the clock shows the wrong time or the Noxon don't react anymore so I have to pull the power plug.

I hope the next bugfix is coming soon........

@JoHo

Similar problem with the clock here: Mostly the shown time is the time when the NOXON was switched on that day.
Not shure who needs this information at all ....

Hi,

I also finally upgraded my NOXON2 to the new firmware, but it was not easy as I guess the new firmware has a fundamental bug: You cannot type any longer upper case letters :( with the remote unit. This makes life not easy in case you have such things in your WPA key: At least when I use the remote control, only the respective number and then the 3 lower case letters show up.

Fianally I succeded with fast ethernet connection and using the SW to type in the key to the unit. Otherwise you have to generate and type an appropiate new key (w/o upper case letters) for all your network units, which is not very comfortable.

I will report this to Terratec. Anyone else with the same problem, cause I cannot believe that they really overlooked such a fundamental thing.

The upgqrde itself is nice and I have the feeling that its faster now in search etc..

best regards
Stefan

@Stefan: Same problem here.
I wonder if Terratec tests firmware updates at all.

I also find it annoying that the new firmware seems to have a negative impact on the system performance of the Noxon 2 (which actually was not really great before).

Is there a way to go back to an old firmware?

New firmware

Post by dosdne » Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:28 pm

As the new firmware for the Noxon IRadio and Noxon 2 has been released I had quite some trouble with my hardware, being my PC and my IRadio.
First I had consideable problems starting the Noxon Audio Manager and later upgading the firmware. In the end I had to reinstall my entire PC after the Audio Manager f***d up my entire system and damaged some system dll files. What a shame, Terratec is not capable to test their software before release. They will have to rethink their entire upgrading business.
After having reinstalled Windows, I tried my luck again and The audio Manager worked only if I moved the entire window of the app to the edge of the screen. Must be a compatability problem with my video card. Don´t really know...
Anyway, I finally managed to install the new firmware and realized that this firmware had a lot of bugs and problems. The new bigger display does not make it easier to read anything as it is flickering madly. The new Podcast section is not worth anything as I still cannot configure the podcasts I want to listen to, but are not listed in this exclusive list. So, still the old method of webjay and collectik I´m afraid. And even if there are podcasts listed I am interested in I cannot put them to my favourites, which makes it unbearable to look for them each time for minutes and minutes.
Another bug seems to be the lacking possibility to assign remote control buttons 6 to 0 to any station anymore....
Altogether a pretty bad upgrade.

Status on the OGG capability

Post by Rabot » Wed Dec 20, 2006 11:50 am

Hi,

I just bought the Noxon iRadio after having seen that a new firmware was available allowing playing OGG files (a large part of my collection).

I have read that some of you here have troubles with OGG files even with the new firmware. Is this problem related to the version of the UPnP TwonkyMusic server (I believe that the CDROM version is version 3.x (under Linux at least)) or is this OGG feature not properly implemented in the Noxon ?

Post by trolitax » Mon Jan 01, 2007 8:02 pm

Stability Noxon2 New Firmware 3.5

Twonky 4.1 works fine with new firmware,

but firmware 3.5 is very very unstable.

Noxon freezes if podcast is called. Freezes also just by beeing in standby mode.

Funktioniert einwandfrei. Der Cursor verändert sich bei der Eingabe.

Hello,

yes, I had this UPPERCASE/lowecase problem as well. A friend of mine played a bit around and found out to use the [+] and [-] buttons to switch between uppercase and lowercase.
Thats Terratec - lyrical manuals - but poor technical documentation.
In my oppinion they shoud document theese kind of changes ...

Noxon (new firmware) + Twonky 4.1 + NAS-device = trouble

Post by michaelreuss » Tue Feb 27, 2007 3:57 pm

My setup: Noxon 2/Noxon IRadio + Twonky 4.1 on Buffalo Linkstation.
I updated my Noxon to the new firmware. Then I realised that that was a mistake (constant crashes plus serious handling problems as described here in this forum). Result: I lost my patience in a) Twonky b) Noxon c) Buffalo.
Instead of throwing all three out of the window, I attached a USB-HD to my Noxon 2. That's the only reliable combination at present and that's where I will leave for a while.
The IRadio (which unfortunately doesn't have a USB-Port) has to run on Internet-Radio until a) Terratec b) Twonky come up with stable software.

In short: forget all the tweaks & upgrades & re-downgrades, instead pour protest mails on a) Terratec b) Twonky to work just a little bit harder & faster on reliable updates of their products.

I like the Noxon iRadio a lot.

We have it in our kitchen, so the not working clock is not an issue. (I do not understand however, why it is sooo difficult to get the correct time from a time-server ...)

What I really would like to have is the possibility to subscribe to podcasts .... I mailed this idea to terratec some month ago ... they told me this feature would come with the next firmware update ... well, it did not come this time ...

I more or less gave up on Twonky ... the sorting behavior is not sufficient if you have a collection of classical music ...

Hi,
mein NOXON2audio sagt über das webinterface:

Firmware-Datum: 2007-03-12
Firmware-Version: 3.5.12.6291

Keine Panik

Post by grisu » Mon Jul 02, 2007 8:48 pm

Neue Version 3.5.6369

Post by grisu » Tue Sep 18, 2007 6:12 am

Neue Firmware 6369 = sehr buggy

Post by michaelreuss » Wed Oct 03, 2007 2:49 pm

Post by michaelreuss » Thu Oct 04, 2007 4:32 pm

Muss mich leider erneut korrigieren.

Post by Karsi » Fri Oct 05, 2007 8:03 pm

Karsten

FW upgrade problems

Post by snurre007 » Tue Oct 30, 2007 9:46 pm

Hello!

can't see my noxon 2 in the noxon manager.

don't have the firmware update option in the web interface.

help.

my noxon is directly connected to my router and not via wlan. see frome some posts here that the noxon have to be on the wlan, and not connected to the router via ethernet, but I cannot believe they have made such a ...ehrm... strange thing, so i choose to hope for a better solution than disconnecting the wire and connecting the thing to the wlan with passphrases and all...

have already tried to turn off the firewall.

anyone?

Hi snurre007
try this
Grisu

ansonsten kommen da immer so fragezeichen...
