Can TwonkyMedia/Vision run on simply NAS devices?

Post by Topsurfer » Tue Aug 28, 2007 12:29 pm

Hello,
actuall my Mediaserver is running on my Windows-PC.

But now I will change this, because the PC should not run the whole time.

I find some NAS-storage-devices with LAN-Connectivity (RJ45) and connections like: CP/IP, NBNS (Net BIOS Name Server), Microsoft Networks (CIFS/SMB), DHCP Server / Client (automatische Erkennung), SNTP Client.

Can I install TwonkyVision on such a device, so the clients get the stream direct from the NAS without any PC in the background is running?

F.e. this one:

Or this one (without HD):

I have a QNAP TS-101 NAS and it comes with Twonky already on it - works very well, very happy with it. I believe you can install Twonky on buffalo NAS boxes too but you better double check that.

definately recommend the QNAP NAS though - it also comes with FTP, web interface etc etc...

I use the QNAP TS-101 also, and am very very happy with it.

I searched and explored for a long time to find the right NAS for me, but almost every other NAS needs some degree of "hacking" and installing other firmware to make Twonky work.

With the QNAP it comes embedded and works out of the box perfect. Plus you have much more features, it's quit and very fast!

Hi,
sure, on some NAS devices it can.

If you have a specific one in mind try the following "cook-recipe":

1. Check on the http://www.twonkyvision.com/Products/Tw ... -installed if your favorite NAS is suported. If yes you are a lucky guy, get Twonkymedia and install it.
2. Check if there is a kind of "unslung" or alternative Firmware for your NAS device that open up a Linux-shell for you to investigate the NAS hardware. Use google and "firmware" , "alternative" and "<my>" to look for an "open" firmware. Try to get as much as possible info about your NAS device, e.g. Prozessor, Memory, NIC-Hardware. If you have at least 32 MB of RAM and a Intel-lookalike CPU you may be on your way.
3. Check the diffrent distributions of TwonkyMedia for a suitable version fitting your NAS device.
4. Follow the instructions to install and be happy with it.

Following this rough guidelines I've got a Levelone WAP-0007 and a Linksys NSLU2 running with Twonkymedia.
According to the limited amount of RAM (both systems only carry only 32MB) not all functionality of Twonkymedia should be enabled in the navigation tree, but it works reasonable at a power consumption of about 15 Watt for the NAS plus an additional 5 to 10 Watt for each connected HDD.

Have Fun, :D
