AVI on ZYXEL DMA-1000

Post by Blacktwonky » Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:50 am

Hi there,
stupid question. This is my setting: Twonky on NSLU2 and a brand new Zyxel DMA-1000, which works fine for my purposes, except for...
I do some videoshots with my Canon Ixus 50, and of course those are .avi files, but no DivX or Xvid compression.
And the ZYXEL only plays compressed videos.
As I doubt there is a way to teach the DMA 1000 this, I was wondering if there's a way to tell Twonky to convert the avi to something the DMA 1000 can play.

Does anyone know?
Cheers.

you're right that the DMA-1000 only plays compressed avi files
with XviD, 3ivx (divx) code.

The Twonky Server has no transcode feature on a NAS (NAS has too low perfromance to do the transcode on the fly).
I think it works on PC with VLC, please see here

The best way is transcode your files before you save them on your NAS.
further it saves HDD capacity on your NAS :-)
i.e. with MediaCoder (Freeware)

I almost thought so. I'll try mediacoder then!
Thanks again.

Hi,
because I reconsider to sell my Dlink DSM320 (he wont't play Xvid/DivX-AVI's correct) and buy a new Zyxel DMA-1000 my most important question is, if it's not posible, to stream / play this videos directly from NAS (in my case Maxtore Shared Storage II) - without - transcoding or use PC!?

Zyxel says:
Video Format Support :
  • - WMV9
    - AVI
    - MPEG 1/2/4
    - Xvid
Whats about DivX!? Is MPEG 4 not DivX (3.11 - 6 and DivX Pro)!? Confused :?

Hi mikle,
no, the DMA-1000 is a fantastic device and will play compressed videos in those formats you mentioned.
My post was about those little video flicks shot with a still digi cam, and those don't come out compressed, and thus cannot be streamed without transcoding them into compressed format.
Which actually makes sense, since (in my case) both nslu2 and zyxel DMA are not the devices which have the power to reencode in realtime.
Then you'll need a PC for that.

So, to your question: Buy it, it's good.
What do you think, Momo?
Cheers!

Hi "Blacktwonky",

thanks for your information; now I understand the probs with the uncompressed files.

BUT: could you actually stream videos (Xvid and DivX) over your nslu2!? No dropouts or stuttering!?

With my DSM320 <-> NAS it's not possible; even with TW 4.4.3 beta1...

Hi,

until I bought the DMA-1000 I got also more knowlegde about the video stuff.
i.e. AVI is only a container with contains a video stream and a audio stream.
These streams can be compressed or uncompressed and compressed with different codes: Xvid, DIVX, ...

I recommend to read a little bit in wikipedia.com, that helps a lot and make something clear.

In my configuartion: DMA-1000 + NAS2000 from Raidsonic
the video streaming works wonderful!
My Beamer support 720p videos and I have no really issue.
With video below 720p have no issues
with video =>720p(i) I have only a samll asynchron bug (~2sec audio delay)
which can be fixed by pressing pause -> play

But to be honest a lot of new devices are entering the market, which
offer also .mkv container, maybe the better choice
