Sony PS3 and TwonkyMedia (media supported and not supported)

Post by VAMET » Fri Dec 21, 2007 12:35 pm

Dear TwonkyMedia

I am using Sony Playstation 3 v.2.10 and TwonkyMedia v.4.4.3.

Legend
[+] - this media can be displayed and played by TwonkyMedia as Media Server for Sony PS3
[-] - this media cannot be displayed and played by TwonkyMedia as Media Server for Sony PS3

Sony PS3 supports

Types of files that can be displayed (Photos):
1.JPEG (DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21 compliant) [+]
2.TIFF [-]
3.BMP [-]
4.GIF [-]
5.PNG [-]

Types of files that can be played (Audio):
1.Memory Stick Audio Format (ATRAC) [-]
2.MP3 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3) [+]
3.MP4 (MPEG-4 AAC) [-]
4.WAVE (Linear PCM) [-]
5.WMA
[+]

Types of files that can be played (Video):
1.Memory Stick Video Format
- MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC) [-]
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC) [-]
2.MP4 file format
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC) [+]
3.MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2) [+]
4.MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3 (Dolby Digital), LPCM) [-]
5.MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2) [-]
6.AVI
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM) [-]
- Motion JPEG (Law) [-]
7.AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts) [-]
8.DivX [-]
9.WMV
- VC-1 (WMA Standard V2) [+]

All above media can be displayed and played when they are directly copied to Sony PS3 HDD or from removable media (USB PenDrive etc.).

My question is:
When TwonkyMedia will include support for those media in [-] for Sony PS3?

Best regards.

This post above is most likely the best post on those forums, ever.
Thanks VAMET.
Of course i agree with you and wish all the stuff that's supported from mass storage can be supported from twonky.

Saying Twonky supports the PS3 when 80% of the formats are in fact unsupported is some kind of bad joke imho..
Anyway, best of luck to Christian to make Twonky really PS3 compatible.

That's correct. I agree with your words and that is the main reason, why I don't buy TwonkyMedia license until it will support media such as:

- .avi, .wmv
- .png, .tiff, .bmp
- .wav

That above is "must have" in TwonkyMedia, without it, it is not worth of buying.

PS3 and X360 users are the biggest community and customers for TwonkyMedia Team, they should respect them and support as soon as possible.

Thank you.
Sincerely

Thanks for this link. Can you give feedback on what's supported for the PS3?

To run a UPnP server on my NAS I need a build for Linux MIPS little endian architecture and compiled for glibc version 2.2.3 - Twonky provides this. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the link above has easy installs...

I totally agree that Twonky should be able to stream much more stuff to the PS3. I already bought a license and I am a bit disapointed I must say (moreover because twonky team announced they are going to stop NAS support, and I am using twonky on my NSLU2).

That said, version 4.4.3.1 can stream Divx to the PS3.

Cheers.
