Latest PSP3 System Update Issue

Post by airactivist » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:03 am

Has anyone else been experiencing 4.4.5 compatibility issues with certain video files, such as .mts and .m2ts? After I installed the latest PSP3 system update, my PSP3 shows "unsupported file" in the video area for some, but not all of these types of video files. It's somewhat random, and will still see and play some .m2ts and .mts files, however, not all of them as it did before the update.

I'm curious if anyone else is having the issue, or if they have found a workaround that doesn't require converting the files.

Thanks for all of your help in advance.

Same problem in my case.
After the update on PS3 2.41 mt2s files are no longer 'streamable'. Thanks Sony! I hope Twonky can fix it asap.
I tried to rename mts, mpg but nothing worked.
Recoding is for sure no option. I use the external harddisc as an intermediate solution.

Best regards.

I wish I have never upgraded from PS v 2.36 (I think) to 2.41 as it has broken the m2ts streaming from my Windows Home Server box to the PS3 using Twonky

Dont suppose anyone knows an official way of downgrading a PS3 to an earlier FW version?

Nothing wrong here, everything working perfectly...

I did some testing this afternoon, and it seems that PS3 identified itself differently, as my Clients.db was listing my PS3 as DLNA Complaint 1.0 device. Whilst set to this, I had the problems as described. Setting it back to PS3 profile, everything then worked perfectly again. (TM5.0 B1 Win/Linux).

MAKE SURE YOUR CLIENTS TABLE IS CORRECT!!! (under Clients/Security)

More Info:

It seems PS3, since 2.40 firmware identifies it slightly differently..

Pre 2.40:
X-AV-Client-Info: av=5.0; cn="Sony Computer Entertainment"; mn="PLAYSTATION3"; mv="1.0";
User-Agent: UPnP/1.0 DLNADOC/1.00

Post 2.40:
X-AV-Client-Info: av=5.0; cn="Sony Computer Entertainment Inc."; mn="PLAYSTATION 3"; mv="1.0";
User-Agent: UPnP/1.0 DLNADOC/1.00

Subtle differences, but enough for TwonkyMedia to not understand what client is connecting, and defaulting to DLNA 1.0...

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS, IF I GET A COUPLE OF OTHER CONFIRMATIONS THAT THE FIX WORKS, I WILL ADD A FAQ..

Now that we have seen to have determined what the problem is, what is the go forward solution?

Will PV change the TwonkyMedia server to accommodate the new string?

What happens to us folks that use embedded TwonkyMedia servers (such as the NAS200) that can't manually change the client type?

I, for one, am looking at how to contact Sony to see if they will change the ID string back to the pre-2.40 value as that seems to be the way if they want to fix the greatest amount of users in the shortest period of time as I am sure there are a lot people who have Twonky installed on appliances that can't change the client.db file or will have to try to get their NAS manufacturer to upgrade the Twonky media code if and when Twonky does a fix.

It's possible to edit the Resources/Clients.db file with a text editor, and edit it as follows:

Change this:

Code: Select all

HH:PLAYSTATION3
To this:

Code: Select all

HH:PLAYSTATION 3
Save. Clear your Detected clients table, and reboot Twonky. It will now correctly identify PS3 again.

Unfortunatly, If you have a NAS device, you will have to wait for your vendor to incorporate a official Twonky fix. This is why I would never personally buy a NAS, as you are at the mercy of the vendor.

I would guess that many of you are running Linux or some other sort of operating system on your media server computer. Does anyone have a detailed fix for those of us running Windows Vista? It seems there is some sort of identification issue that some of you have discovered, and I'm curious if anyone knows how to adjust Twonky for Vista. Thanks in advance.

Same way, edit Clients.db, in the Resources folder, or wait for a official update from PacketVideo.

I have a QNAP TS-209 Nas with the latest firmware and Twonky 4.4.5 installed. How can I change this setting?
Isn't there some sort of support between Twonky and QNAP?

You can't

NO, you bought your hardware from QNAP, who in turn licenced Twonky. Your contract is with QNAP, Twonky does not support NAS devices directly, that is up to the NAS manufacturers themselves.

How can I check if the PS3 identifies itself correct?

With some help from QNAP I did the following:
connected to the QNAP with PuTTY
changed to the folder /mnt/HDA_ROOT/twonkymedia/resources
edited clients.db with the command: vi clients.db

The playstation client looked like this:
ID:060
NA:PS3
HH:PLAYSTATION3
DB:FIX
XM:DLNA10
XM:DATETIME
DL:MP4DLNA
HP:chunked
MT:mpeg,mpeg2,vdr,spts,ts video/mpeg
MT:m4a audio/mp4
MT:avi/divx video/avi
AV:no-m3u
I changed it to:
ID:060
NA:PS3
HH:PLAYSTATION 3
DB:FIX
XM:DLNA10
XM:DATETIME
DL:MP4DLNA
HP:chunked
MT:mpeg,mpeg2,vdr,spts,ts video/mpeg
MT:m4a audio/mp4
MT:avi/divx video/avi
AV:no-m3u
I saved the file, restarted Twonky Server, did a rebuild of the database, but still the video's show up as "Incompatible Data". When I copy these files to USB, the playstation plays the files perfectly from both USB and internal harddisk.

Open the configuration webpage, click Clients/Security, make sure your PS3 is listed as PS3, if not, select Reset List, wait for server to reboot and rescan DB, simple as that. If you still have media playback problems, then it's a different problem. I read that some people had problems with MTS and M2TS files, but these have never been officially supported by PS3 client anyway, so that's a red herring...

What file types are you having streaming problems with? Have you run them through GSpot to see what codec they were encoded with?

Thank you so much. :D

This was the last step I had to do.

After a "reset list" on the Clients/security page the PS3 showed up as PS3.
Now all the files stream perfectly.

Thanks again!

Red Herring? I'm at a loss to understand why, "officially" or unofficially why Twonky worked seamlessly with the PS3 prior to the 2.41 update streaming these .m2ts and .files, and why the PS3 can still play .m2ts and .mts files (which, by the way, are organic Sony files for their AVCHD camcorder line) on the PS3 hard drive or memory slots.

Although I've tried editing the string as proposed here, I'm still getting random "unsupported data" with these and some other video files that play without hesitation or flaw as long as they're located on the PS3 proper.

Twonky....are you listening? Sony? Anyone?

airactivist, I share your frustration but you are haviing better luck than me moving forward with this one.

I am running Tronky 4.4.5 on a Windows Home Server (WHS) which is connected via a Gigabit switch (no wireless) to the PS3.I think it is unlikely that bandwidth is an issue here!

Since the upgrade of the PS3 to 2.41 none of my M2TS files will stream to the PS3 - they appear as "unsupported data" in the XMB.

As a test I have installed Twonky on a vista based machine and I have the same problem.

My M2TS files are basically clips taken from my Sony SR8E camcorder and edited together using Adobe Premier CS3 and exported using the MainConcept mpeg encoder which preserves the 5.1 soundtrack.

If I take one of those m2ts files from the WHS and put it on CD or a memory stick the PS3 plays them fine. The issue is to to with streaming a supported file format.

I have changed the client.db file and the PS3 now correctly appears in the Twonky client list as a PS3. I have rebooted the WHS and still no joy. The PS3 still discovers and plays MPG files correctly. I have reset the PS3 several times and still no joy.

I hope someone can find a fix for this as for a while the combination of PS3 and twonky did exactly what I want!

Hey there, Bugsy...we're experiencing almost exactly the same thing. Does your PS3 recognize some, but not other .m2ts and .mts files? That's what is happening here where I am. I even bought another PS3 to troubleshoot, and without the 2.41 update, all is well...however, as soon as you install the 2.41 update...wham. No dice. Twonky needs to figure this one out, or Sony needs to roll back the update and make it available. I don't think even the best and brightest out there are going to figure out a workaround that helps us.

I'll keep you posted.

My PS3 does not recognise any M2TS files at all since the update. However if I copy one of the "unsupported data" files to a DVD or memory stick any of them play fine.

It is as clear cut as that. I will be very dissapointed if this cant be made to work however I think that if the resolution requires Sony to change something we may be here a while as it is probably like trying to get an Oil Tanker to do a handbrake turn...

In a different post on this forum I did post a twonky log showing errors when the PS3 tried to "browse" the twonky resources but as yet I havent had any replies. I have attatched the log below

I also changed the client.db entry. PS3 is shown in Twonky correctly.
But: All mt2s are no longer streamable.
Must be something else.
Let's hope on a fast bug fix ....
Thanks.

Hi.
Can can confirm this issue with all the .m2ts Files.

BUT: with the original UpnP Plugin from Infrant's ReadyNAS, I still can play all the TS files without any problem (but I want to get rid of it...).
From my point of view, it's not the FW 2.41 to blame alone, it could be rather a Twonky issue alltogether.

Danny - in some ways I hope it is a Twonky issue as I think there would be more chance of getting a faster resolution that way.

All I can say is that (and I know this has been said several times) the problem has only occured for me since V2.41 where as previously on 2.36 it worked perfectly.

Whilst I suspect the DNLA identifier changing from PLAYSTATION3 to PLAYSTATION 3 will have caused problems which any software which relies on that value I suspect there are other problems that as of yet havent been uncovered.

I know one poster has gone out and bought a non-upgraded PS3 and it works correctly.

Also, if you download and install various other server programs, such as TVersity, NeroHome etc, you'll fine the same sort of issue. Some .mts and .m2ts files will play, and some will not, the ones that don't play either not being displayed, or displayed as "unsupported data".

Through the process of elimination, that is, buying an non-updated to 2.41 PS3, updating it, and running the other server programs also before and after, I've come to the conclusion that it's a Twonky issue only in as much as they would need to rewrite their code to adapt to Sony's rewrite via their update 2.41.

So, either Sony will have to roll back like they did with their initial release of 2.40, back to 2.36 (apparently bricked numerous consoles), or Twonky code-writers will have to adapt via beta or new release to the new Sony protocol. I would imagine the delay entails a few issues, such as the overall commitment by Sony to this particular update, and the time it will take Twonky to write new code that can handshake efficiently with 2.41.

In the meantime, the efficiency and ease of use of the PS3 and Twonky have been severely compromised. If you're a "gamer", it probably is meaningless to you, but if you were using the symbiotic set-up that worked oh so effortlessly in the past, and now is frustratingly rendered inert, it's cause for frustration and despair.

Let's hope that those in the know are feverishly working on a fix, and reading these boards.

I have same problem with .MTS and .M2TS files.
I was "tricked" by the fact that I tested the 30-day trial version of TV when (unaware of all this) my PS3 was still on an older firmware.
All files streamed very well.
I bought the registered version of TV 4.4.5 and at the same time updated the PS3 to ver. 2.41.
OOOPS. No more AVCHD streaming (only a few random files)

Actually all other video files (.VOB) still stream well.
I have also noticed that the very few .MTS files that the PS3 is showing (and playing) are labelled by PS3 as "MPEG-2", which obviously they are not since they are AVCHD.

I have tried editing the Resources/Clients.db file inserting "PLAYSTATION 3" instead of "PLAYSTATION3", but no joy.

My configuration:
Vista 32 Home Premium SP1
TV 4.4.5 registered
BT Home Hub
HomePlugs 85 Mbits (not wireless)
PS3 ver. 2.41

Hopefully Twonky is working on a fix.

The short term fix, is to browse to the file as usual, press Triangle on the PS3, and Copy. It will download the file from Twonky to the PS3 HDD, and you can play it from there. Not ideal, but not too much of a headache. Hopefully this is good enough until things get sorted...

Also copy of the files with the triangle option is not possible with my Server DNS 323 (Twonky 4.4.5)
The PS3 display an error.
Does anybody know when a bug fix for streaming MP4 Files will be available? (From Twonky or PS3)

My Work around

This does not work, as after you select "Copy", it would say no title to copy :(

The main problem I am having is the mts file from my Canon AVCHD (HF100) camcorder. They all play fine from memory card, USB or internal drive. Just does not work from NAS.
Here's my work around - remux all the files with tsRemuX or tsmuxer, and they all work! I am using a batch file to process them, since there is no video transcoding involved, it just takes a short time.

I have absolutely no idea why the remuxed version is recognized while the out of camcorder files are not. It is not completely compatible though, as it still shows the files as "mpeg-2" and the video length / time stamp is all wrong, and fast forward 10x for a while would freeze the playback. But at least it is working and streamable.

I am using a LaCie Disk Mini with Twonky 4.4.4 patch. We can't edit the Client db list, but there is a way.
After activiting the Twonky admin access with a patch, go to "Client/Security", and manually change the Media Receivers to PS3 (identify with PS3's MAC address). But it does not apparently do anything regarding m2ts file streaming problem

Good Idea to remux but also this doesn't work with my files. (I also have mainly the problem with my files from my canon HF100)
Remuxed files (ts and m2ts) which I created with tsRemuX are also displayed as incompatible data on my PS3.
Trying to remux files with tsmuxer lead to an error during remuxing (Not enought buffer for parse video stream)
Increasing the VBV buffer size to the maxim value didn't help.

Reading in another forum concering this topic shows that sony is not aware about this problem.
They heard the first time about this problem and they think this is a special problem from a single user.

Is Twonky aware about this :?:
Tomorrow I will send them a message.

Has any one retested with version 2.42?

Post by Bugsy1957 » Fri Aug 01, 2008 7:18 am

I just checked and it looks like Sony have released FW 2.42 for the PS3

Has anyone tested streaming with this release?

I am not able to do this until Friday evening

It still doesn't work. Sporadic and random playing of .m2ts and .mts files, just like the 2.41. Sony and Twonky are not shaking hands and playing well with each other. Still. A fix, please?

This is where I get confused... if the PS3 will play some files and not others (I still haven't found the pattern yet) why is this Twonky's fault?

You can add me to the list of "frustrated upgraded" PS3 users. I bought the console primarily as a media server as I had researched the fact that it could natively play the .M2TS files produced by my Canon Vixia HF10 HD camcorder, streamed from my Windows Home Server (HP Mediasmart). Blu-Ray and games come in as distant 2nd and 3rd.

Since I like to be up to date, and assuming that most updates will not REMOVE features, I regrettably upgraded my PS3 to the latest FW (2.41 at the time) as soon as I set it up, to find that my media played fine from the camera or a USB drive, but was "unsupported format" when streamed to the console, except for a very small number of clips that play flawlessly but are recognized by the PS3 as MPEG... Since these are the same files, I can only assume that the problem lies with the PS3, or in how the files are presented to the console by the PVConnect software (or a combination of both). The client.db fix, in my case, did not resolve the issue at all... Other supported video files work well, as do pictures and music.

Since .M2TS streaming apparently used to work prior to the firmware upgrade, so I still have hope that a fix is forthcoming, but I am now seriously considering returning the console at the end of my 30-day grace period.

Fingers crossed...

I have attempted to email Sony and got the reply shown below.

My concern is that if I ring this number I will get through to a general call centre and they wont have the knowledge to start investigating the problem

Has anyone else here had any dealings with this number?

"Twonky's Fault"? Well, in as much as prior to the 2.4x updates, TwonkyMedia was the perfect killer application, specifically for those of us who own the Canon HF10 or Sony SR11/12 camcorders. Prior to the updates, you could upload these .m2ts and .mts files to a host server computer, and they would play seamlessly and flawlessly via the Playstation 3 utilizing your home network with the Twonky software server enabled. Now, sadly...and of course, I don't blame the Twonky code writers, this fantastic functionality has been disabled...nonsensically so. No one can really explain, either from the Sony side, or the PacketVideo/Twonky side, why this has occurred.

One thing that is crystal clear, is that Twonky is still bannering itself on its website as "supporting" the Playstation 3. Certainly they are, however, now the "support" is quite anemic and selective.

What really needs to occur is for the Twonky code-writers to work feverishly on a hand-shaking fix, patch or code that will restore the streaming video of .m2ts and .mts files that flourished prior to the Sony initiated 2.4x updates. Considering that at one time or another, they had to devise a way to incorporate Playstation 3 compatibility and streaming when they wrote the program initially. Of course, there's always going to be some sort of delay after a Sony update to the Playstation 3 console, but what is happening here is a cryptic sort of response to the known issue, as if it's "isolated" or not pertinent in some way.

No, the issue is real, needs to be met head on, and rectified, or...PacketVideo/Twonky should just state that they're handcuffed, cannot correct the streaming issue, and just say so on their website, that is, something along the lines of: "Playstation 3 supported only for certain types of files that the Playstation 3 natively supports if you utilize our software, and we really have no idea when either Sony, or PacketVideo/Twonky will be able to restore prior functionality."

This really isn't about "blame". It's truth in advertising, and buying a couple of pigs in a poke. Let's just confront the issue, and either admit that the problem is irrevocable, or, indicate that there is an issue and it's being addressed.

So far, this has not been forthcoming from PacketVideo/Twonky or Sony.

I found reading this post very interesting - both in terms of the content and my reaction to it.

I couldn’t agree any more with the first paragraph. When I was running my PS at 2.36 and found that I could stream the m2ts files from my sony Sr8E I bought a copy then and there. Your observation of the "killer app" is spot on.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment that "What really needs to occur is for the Twonky code-writers to work feverishly on a hand-shaking fix" in reality I dont think this will happen as I suspect that the streaming issue (a) is a Sony issue and (b) it is an issue that are affecting a number of ISVs of which Twonky/PVConnect is just one. I know from personal experience that trying to get the “tail to wag the dog” to get this resolved is an approach which very rarely works.

As someone who is about to go away on hols and come back with even more HD footage of the kids at play I just want the ****** thing to work – again!

Hi Jeeps, as I mentioned in my post above, have you tried using tsRemux or tsMuxeR to remux the files? The remuxed m2ts files (from my HF100) can now stream from my LaCie NAS.

Thanks for the follow-up nosnoop. The frustrating thing is that I did not want to have to do anything to these files to view them (like everyone else on this thread), prior to purchasing the PS3 I was playing the files on my 360, after converting them to a compatible format with Pinnacle Studio 11... but that took forever to do, and I undoubtedly lost some quality in the conversion.

How much work and time is involved in remuxing HD files compared to the above?

And which of the two programs do you recommend?

Sigh... here we go again...

Well gents, I threw in the towel, in a manner of speaking...

Since the PS3 I bought was within the 30-day grace period, I will return it for a full refund, as it does not do what I primarily bought it for after the 2.41 update.

In the mean time, I went to another big chain store and picked up a "virgin" v. 2.35 80GB MSG4 bundle (the same thing I had originally purchased), plugged it in, and after a little fiddling, it works! Strangely the PS3 still thinks my .M2TS streamed from the WHS are MPEG2 files, but I really don't care!

I'll keep a close eye on the forums and will NOT upgrade until the issue is conclusively resolved.

Good luck to all.

Out of interest and may be of a mute point to any NAS owner?
but anyone using either WIndows Vista Or Windows XP could be Streamign via Windows Media Player 11?
So have you tried serving the content with that? as this doesnt identify the PS3 atall. u jsut allow it as a DLNA device on your network
I cant test this as i have no M2ts files but i do have some AVI's that wont play with Twonky. that were fine with Windows media player

As far as I know WMP 11 (out of the box) will not play M2T/M2TS content - whether streamed or local.

So this test may not be valid

well its a case of a codec pack probaly like K-lite for instance that will get WMP 11 to play pretty much anything
and even show a thmbnail of it in your library

just cuz a player dotn play it doesnt mean it shouldnt be able to share it to something else
im thinking the way WMP 11 works sis diff to rest as i get it to streem FLV
not sure it can play flv as i use VLC for that

I'm pretty familiar with DLNA/UPNP, so I checked what information the Twonky 4.4.6 gives out for the .MTS files I have on my Terastation/Twonky box.

I was shocked to see that .MTS files are reported as DLNA_PS_PAL_.. files rather than DLNA_TS_NTSC_AVC... files. If Sony updated if firmware to be a bit more careful on the media formats it accepts, I would say that the PS3 is quite right now to play the MTS files from the 4.4.6 player.

So my feeling is that while Sony may have 'improved' their stack' this as a side-effect undercovered the wrong metadata signalling from the Twonkyserver.

Can someone from Twonky/PV confirm that the RES element in the MTS media items is in fact wrong and perhaps fix it?

Dammad.

Out of interest does the file report any differently if you remux it?

I checked the file types after remux and this is what I see.

First element in a directory of just MTS files from a HF100 camera is labelled as MPEG_PS_PAL and mime-type video/mpeg. This one plays, but all the rest are normally 'unsupported'.

Second element in directory (same source/type) is flagged as MPEG_TS_SD_EU_T (totally wrong) and MIME type video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts

Second element renamed to .M2TS is the same.

Second element renamed to .M2TS but remuxed shows.MPEG_PS_PAL and mime-type video/mpeg. This one plays.

My feeling is that:
- Twonky 4.4.6 incorrectly flags .MTS files (some times as MPEG_PS_PAL with MIME: MPEG.TTS)
- PS3 checks the MIME type. When it is video/mpeg is manages to play it even though it is flagged as PS_PAL (wrong also).

Twonky doesn't officially support MTS/M2TS so I guess this is to be expected, but the problems do appear to stem from the Twonky side.

I managed to install Twonky to my LS Live, I used the LS Pro package instead of the the Kuro Box package which actually didn't work on my LS Live as suggested.

PCast on the LS Live just didn't work with PS3 on acceptable level so I decided to swap over to Twonky.

Unfortunately I just noticded that that due to firmware update on PS3 to 2.41/2.43 it no longer supports most of the video files. I can play only MPEG2 videos nothing else. I can see all of the photos just fine and I can also stream video files from my MacBook Pro to PS3 with Twonky.

Has anybody got some info if I can get PS3 and LS Live with Twonky to work together properly?

I have following settup:

- PS3 v 2.43

- Twonkymedia 5.0 Beta 1 for Linkstation Pro

Got it, just didn´t notice the fix. After I changed the general DLNA device to PS3, videos started streaming. Now it works great!

Hi guys, not sure if this is related... okay I've been playing around trying to get my DVD's in the right format to stream using Twonky on my LinkStation.

I've created loads of different files with different programs and came to the conclusion that a VOB or M2TS extension is best so h264 and ac3 5.1 sound works properly.

When streaming the PS3 can't read the length of the movie and the ff and rw don't work.

I thought this was a problem with the format at first.

When saving the file to the PS3 HDD it works correctly - movie lenth okay.

So is my problem with Twonky or is the PS3 at fault?

Thanks

Nick
