Media Client Recommendations

Post by ribs » Tue Aug 05, 2008 2:38 pm

Hi,

I have been streaming media around my house for quite a while now starting our with a Hauppauge MVP box which was pretty usless. I now have Twonky V4.4.4 running on a dedicated Linux server which streams Videos, Music and pictures to my 3 clients.

All of my Videos are in a single VOB taken straight from DVD with full 5 channel sound. All my music is MP3 format and all images are JPEG.

My main client in the living room is a PS3 connected to a 42inch Plasma TV via HDMI and a Sony surround sound system via Optical. As the most expensive of the 3 clients it is certainly the best, videos play flawlessly and pretty much identical to watching the original DVD.

I also have a D-Link 320RD, this is only used for playing videos in the kids bedroom. Its usefullness is flaky, it will not play VOBs greater than 4GIG (it will play but stops at the 4GB point), and it doesn't have any pause, rewind or fast forward facility.

Finally I have a Roku Soundbridge (music only) this works really well but the small screen is a little difficult to see so I generally pre compile playlists on a PC and let the Roku play them.

Now I'm looking for another client, its main purpose is to play VOB video files on a HD TV, so I need a player with a HDMI output. I would also like optical or coaxial so that I can benefit from surround sound too. What I want is a PS3 media player only without the other stuff :)

I'm in the UK and I'm struggling to find anything that suits my needs, the Netgear EVA-8000 looked promising but has had some bad reviews, the Philips Streamium seems to have disappeared so I'm now thinking at £190 the XBox 360 might be the best alternative even I'm never going to buy a game for it.

Any comments and suggestion would be great.

I personally think you will struggle. The few clients I have seen that do video, don't even live in the same league as the PS3's media capabilities.

If you do find something, let me know, as I want something for upstairs!!! The HDMI requirement is optional, but it must work reliably
