Matroska MKV format conversion

Post by jaak » Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:41 pm

I got few films in Matroska format (viedo stream), MKV files. As Twonky and D-Link does not support it, what is the best conversion software and conversion codex? I tried divx and mpeg-4. Any suggestions?

To convert the files you could try MediaCoder available at:

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

It's free, runs on Windows and Linux (under Wine) and appears to be able to convert Matroska files.

I've only used it convert mp4 or xvid files, but it seems to work quite well.

As for a codex mpeg2 is probably the one that would be most likely to work, with the least amount of trial and error....

Thanks a lot. Trial and error still makes me crazy. Lots of time spent on that...

Anyone luck and still get the mkv-files running!?

In my combination Twonky 4.4.6 on MSSII and Zyxel DMA-1000 the *.mkv files are grey and so couldn't play :(

I gave up. Too complicated and in 90% cases impossible to find right decode method. I ordered Popcorn Hour HS streamer to look Matroska HD movies. Matroska/H264 is currently #1 HD format in torrent stuff and need player, able to play them without cumbersome decoding process.

I have been using MKV2VOB with good success. I can't always seem to get the divx files to work, but the vob files stream to my PS3 nicely. The only problem I have with the vob files is that the PS3 does not like to FF or REW the vob and doing so causes intermittent sync issues. MKV2VOB can be found here:

If anyone has greater success with it please share.

Simply add .avi extention to name of any MKV file and AV-server will streaming it.
But you have to use player with MKV reading function.

I'll try that, but wasn't the point of twonky / tversity / etc. to be able to abstract the media file formats so that once it's able to read a file, that any DLNA-compliant machine should be able to read it?

I was hoping twonky 4.4.9 (which can read mkv files, supposedly) and PS3 (2.50 firmware) would have gotten this done by now :(

I use PopCornHour hardware player(http://www.popcornhour.com) without problem. Also Plex (http://plexapp.com/) and XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) sofware are working fine on Mac Mini and iMac.

I can recommend to everybody who are interested in HD streaming (usually MKV and H.246 related), that following combination works well

TwonkyMedia 4.4.9 as server on Win XP
Popcorn Hour A-110 as client

I have streamed 1080p stuff at 15+ Mbps video and 1,5Mbps DTS sound flying...

I was wondering if anyone with a DSM-750 has tried changing the mkv extension to avi with the new twonky 4.4.9 version? I know it works with popcorn hour but was wondering about the 750.

Hi Jaak,

I saw, you now own a Popcorn Hour  . I still think about to buy this one, too..

But I read, that playing music (mp3) is terrible (couldn't reply whole directory, dont' show albumart or folder.jpg of cd-cover) and reply of picture also terrible (no thumbnails).

Could you comment and/or confirm that!?

That points are main issues for me, even though I know an understood that the Popcorn Hour (or Syvio 200 or TT100 - they are only other branded but identical in construction)

Convert MKV to AVI for the DSM-510??? Simply download and use XviD4PSP 5.0 . It's free too. Works a treat! :)
