Licence Key problems.

Post by Frank Schulze » Sun Nov 01, 2009 8:57 am

I bought the license key in august 2008. I´m running twonky 4.4.17 and this morning I got the message that this license key is already in use. I reported this to the support team, but I´ve heard you get little help from there.

Any ideas what I can do?

Frank

Coincidence?

This also happened to me today 01 Nov 2009. I am running Twonky Media Server 5.0.61. It was working fine yesterday, but today the message "This key is already in use by another instance of the server" is displayed on the Server Status page of the server's web interface. However, there is no other instance of the server running. I acquired the licence key with my Pure Evoke Flow radio in May 2009.

I will try my luck with the Support team.

That's the problem, if licensing depends from (one?) server in internet.

Maybe they will now think of a new license model depending on customers hardware, no depending on manufacturers server...

I'm running 4.4.3.1 and have been for a couple of years now then suddenly after midnight last night/this morning it stopped working, gave me the same "This key is already in use by another instance of the server." message.

Mailed support, nothing back yet.

Any ideas anyone?

I just experienced the same problem. And it is a little disheartening to see that the website listed as the official support channel fails to load!

In my case, the NAS that was running Twonky was having major DHCP issues and got assigned a new IP 3 times in an hour.
After that, twonky started saying the license was already in use.
I read on another post somewhere that power cycling the router resolved the issue. But this did not work for me.

Emails sent to report fault; I'd guess a server has crashed

Post by Briain » Sun Nov 01, 2009 11:57 am

Hi Folks

My 5.0.68 is still working; I wonder if one of the PV servers has fallen over? I've sent an email to Rick, Christian and Reinhard so hopefully one of them will pick it up shortly. If it's a main server that's fallen over, they'll likely be aware of it and I’d not be surprised if someone’s either already on their way to repair it, or hopefully even working on it already.

Sorry, not adding anything new here,
Just posting to show that there is an army of "loyal - fee paying" Twonky users out there with no service!

Brian,

Does that mean that twonky "phones home" to validate its key during normal use?

Thanks

Yes

Yes, that's why you can only run up to three instances on your network. I think it likely communicates with the PV server when you start it up. My NAS is on all the time so that's maybe why I've not yet had a key error. I don't know how often it communicates to PV when it's on 24/7 system like mine.

The keys are logged on a server and if more than 3 instances of it occur, it kills one of them. I had to email PV when the PV server accidentally logged too may uses (I was testing beta's at the time); they deleted the info and it worked right away. That's why I'm guessing that it is likely to be one of these servers which is causing the problems.

Try restarting Twonky but without the internet connection active. Once it's running, you can restore the internet connection. My Twonky is still working, but this trick has worked for one of the chaps on the Linn forum.

Oooh I am very annoyed, my TwonkyServer has also stopped working.

Yes the software phones home:

It sends GET /api/checkkey.php to www.twonkyvision.com which resolves to drsancluster1.pv.com

The current HTTP OK the response that Twonky Internet servers send back the TwonkyServer does not like it and throws up the error:

"This key is already in use by another instance of the server"

Since I am not running another instance I believe Twonky are breaking the terms of the license agreement. Either via a misconfiguration on their server or by a deliberate attempt to stop older versions working.

Whatever the reason, you can fix this by adding some dummy entries in your /etc/hosts file on the server your TwonkyServer runs on.

e.g.

10.0.0.25 drsancluster1.pv.com
10.0.0.25 www.twonkyvision.com

10.0.0.25 is just a dummy address on my network. Any address should work.

If the TwonkyServer cannot phone home it works fine.

I would recommend leaving this in place in case other issues surface in the future.

Mr Angry.

Forgot to mention, it only seems to check the license on startup.

So yeah, disconnecting your Internet connection, and restarting Twonky, and then connecting back the Internet connection will also work.

I wouldn't put a permanent block rule into place, we don't know the full ramifications of that. However as suggested, as a workaround until the server problems sorted, simply start the server BEFORE you start your networking connection.

I have emailed the PV guys, and fix should be inplace shortly.

OK, locking topic. too many angry people. You have a temporary workaround until the server(s) are reset. Also edited the subject so other users may find this thread and the solution.
