Is ist possible to play MKV Files (HD movies in a MKV Container, some 720p some 1080p) with a Playstation 3 (actual Firmware) by streaming with the TwonkyMedia 5 Software (or maybe an other uPnP AV Software?)

Working on this myself. As soon as I can figure out transcoding for ogg files I will try with mkvs also. Please post if you find the solution.
Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
nope as the PlayStation3 doesn´t support mkv´s so without transcoding this is not going to fly. Also the PS3 doesn´t support DTS audio besides if its on a disc like DVD / BluRay -> also have to recode sound.
I wonder if TVersity works for that, as it supports transcoding based on the client, but you would have to test for that. You certainly need a damn fast computer/cpu for that, since transcoding HD content is goging to hog your cpu
The other solution: you can convert your mkvs to other format, usually without transcoding the video (equals in: not taking much time) so your PS3 understands it natively and then it also works with Twonky. Google for mkv2vob.

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
almost forgot: there is a little spark in the dark: DivX 7 will come with MKV support, so if Sony ever decides to also get DivX 7 certification, they will prolly also support MKV. Anyhow, Sony did neither commit to DivX 7 nor to also include MKV support.

Its Possible.
There exist's a Media Server with can "on the fly" transcode MKV.

Yes, there was one posted in this thread a little over a week ago. Seems somebody has removed the related posts.
Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
Ditto on mkv2vob http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=131782 works really well. Convert the MKV to another format. I use m2ts since its a "Sony" standard and will likely be supported well on a PS3. It is very easy to convert and very fast as well.

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
Its not really funny if you have already more then 20 movies in a mkv container. AND its "work" if there exists a possibility to watch mkv files without converting everybody would be happier (and there is a solution, but i can't post it on the Twonky media Forum *g*)
Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
Well of course there are servers that can transcode on the fly, but first of all you need a quite decent cpu, so for a media server running on a NAS that will not work and also you specifically asked if it was possible with TwonkyMedia Server

Yes, i asked if its possible with Twonkymedia, but a alternative is always usefull because everybody who owns a PS3 and wana watch movies owns also a PC and not only a NAS (how else should he get the movies to the nas?)
quite decent... I use a Athlon X2 4400+ for the transcoding. works fine.
TwonkyMedia Team: It would be grad if you could implement transcoding for PS3

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
Twonky can't stream mkv's, but this can:
http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
In fact, the above server can stream a ton of other formats including ISO images of DVDs with subtitle support. Currently I have it installed with Twonky on the same server without any problems.
It also generates thumbnails for all of your videos on the fly and does NOT require a folder.jpg file for the thumbnail. You don't even have to have the videos in separate folders. This is one feature that I would love to see in Twonky, but we've seen no progress in that direction. But then again, the above server is targeted only at the PS3 whereas Twonky supports many other media renderers such as the XBOX360, Roku, etc.

Here is a tutorial about how to convert mkv files to play on PS3, hope it helps:)

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
isn't the whole point of 5.x to allow transcoding?
isn't MKV transcoding a key use case for PS3?
how can twonky not be jumping on this demand.... they can obsolete some of these converters (and from this thread you can tell there are plenty of them).

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
no,.since mkv is not supported by ps3. Just change the mkv to mp4 and then put it to ps3.

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
whats the current status of this topic? I want to change from PS3 MediaServer to Twonky (reason: stability problems with the ps3ms) and the mkv filetype is very importent.
I have a good machine which can transcode mkv's on the fly without problem (iQuadCore Q9400/8GB Ram). I just need a programm/extension to twonky which can do that...
any help?
PS: convert mkv's is no solution!

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
Came Looking on here for some answers to my MKV, MyBook World - PS3 problems
Running 2 x MyBookworld and want to play MKV's from them on a PS3, dont want to have to start installing new Media streaming software onto them when Twonky's already on
Was hoping for an update from Twonky for MKV support

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
I tried this yesterday on my Linux server:
Created a symlink to ffmpeg into cgi-bin
Checked the box in the web GUI to transcode video to MPEG
Created ffmpeg-mkv-mpg.desc
This seems to work, i.e. I can play the files, but no fast forward or pause is possible. I'm new to the transcoding engine in Twonkymedia 5, so the asynchronous/priority part I'd like to get explained.

I just found out the hard way that you cannot run twonkymedia with the -D option because ffmpeg won't start then. The server freezes and the PS3 goes nuts.
flac transcoding works though.

Ok, so if I start twonkymedia WITHOUT -D it works!
ffmpeg.location
ffmpeg-mkv-mpeg.desc
While it's transcoding you can't pause or fast forward, but the second time it uses the cached mpeg-file and you are in full control.

/usr/bin
Code: Select all
exec: ffmpeg -threads 2 -i $infile -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -acodec copy -f vob -copyts -y $outfile

Yes. However I can't get on-the-fly transcoding to work on 6.0 with the same settings I described above for 5.1. Has anyone succeded in that with Twonky 6.0?

You saying no other settings have to be enabled except that file needs to be in there for on the fly transcoding?

For 5.1, yes, that's what I did. For 6.0 it doesn't work at all for me.

Strange... i also think Twonky themselves should help with this, specially since we are all paying customers, the least thing they could do is built in MKV on the fly transcoding support

Re: playing MKV on a PS3?
TwonkyServer streams some types of MKV files without problems. Most playback issues are the result of the client and not the server. Based on what I've read the PS3 cannot play MKV files.
Transcoding will probably help with this. Although it's possible today with TS 6.x, setup isn't that easy. TS 7.0 will include built-in trancoding which should help with some MKV files and devices like the PS3.

Playstation 3 can play most of the video content in mkv files but doesn't support the MKV container. So it is remuxed into an MP4 container. Further, sometimes it can't handle the audio (if you don't have a DTS setup).
Would it be possible for Twonky to remux the files on-the-fly (not transcode it as that can be too processor intensive) and, if necessary, transcode just the audio (which is a lot less than doing the video/whole file)? Also, it would only need to do this when a PS3 is requesting the file, as other media boxes support MKV.
(Background: I have a PS3 and a WD TV Live Plus. The latter supports MKV so it's kind of annoying to have to remux MKVs just for my PS3 when the WD plays them fine)
To me that is would be a killer feature for Twonky to separate itself from the pack of media servers.
