HP MediaSmart Server issues

Post by Twonky_Rick » Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:33 pm

Some users here have reported problems with high CPU utilization and their HP MediaSmart servers . We believe that all TwonkyServer-related issues that may have contributed to high CPU usage have been fixed. Before December, we delivered an update to HP that contained several fixes (TMS 5.1.2). Unfortunately there is a delay between the time we turn updates to HP and the time they deploy them to the field. We're trying to contact HP to get more information about when they plan to release this, but so far have not heard back from them.

Please note:
There may still be other “Media Collector” or Media Converter-related CPU issues that are outside of our control because we did not create those apps for HP.

Good news. Just got an update from our contact at HP on this.
We’re aware of 2 problems with the current version of TwonkyMedia server that we are shipping. Both cause the CPU utilization to max out at 100%. In one case it occurs with system with a large media library when adding or removing new media – this usually dies down after the DB updates are complete. However, our support team has also received customer issues for brand new systems with no media at all. The CPU usage pegs at 100% and never dies down. We have been unable to reproduce this problem for defect tracking. We have been in contact with your team and they were not able to repro this problem either, but they did fix the first problem and provided us a drop for testing.

We are in the process of trying to get this fix to some of our customers with the second problem – to see if it fixes this issue as well. Right now we are waiting to hear back from our support team on this. If it proves to fix both problems, then we will be building the update package to distribute this fix in Feb; and will likely release in early March. If it does not fix the second problem, then we may need to try to work with your team to better isolate the problem and get a fix implemented. This would delay the release of the fix for the first problem as well.
I will provide more updates as I get them.

Will this also fix the stuttering problems seen by Twonky users?

Other media streamers such as Tversity, Orb and PS3 media server do not experience these hourly stutters.

Every hour when demigrator.exe kicks in on WHS, Twonky stops playing the movie and pauses for around 5 minutes or so. For some people with more powerful systems it's only a couple minutes, and others close to 7 minutes while demigrator.exe does it's thing. It is not possible to make it through and entire movie using Twonky Server 5.0.2 (built into MSS ex487 2.5) without the interruptions.

There are two issues here. 1st is Microsoft needs to address why demigrator.exe is consuming around 90-100% of the processor while streaming instead of sensing a load on the server and waiting to balance it's drives. 2nd is why Twonky doesn't have a long enough video buffer to compensate.

I ask if Twonky has fixed this issue as users of Tversity, Orb, "PS3 Media server all do not experience this issue". Not all users have this issue, it depends on if you have more than 1 drive and have enabled folder duplication. I put most of the blame here on Twonky as other media streamers do not suffer the same fate as Twonky.

I would really like to see this problem get addressed. I logged many calls into HP about this and the only answer they can give is to just find another solution to stream videos. I find that solution mostly acceptable, but enjoy streaming music to my iphone which requires Twonky :(

I have been a Twonky fan for many years. It has come preinstalled on many of my prior NAS solutions and has never let me down. I will me happy to assist you in any way I can.

I am affected by this issue rendering my HP MediaSmart server useless. Even with an empty server I have 100% CPU utilization. I am waiting for this update for months making my Twonky/HP Media server experience very disappointing. Any updates on when it will be available from HP?

Regards,
Martin

Hi,

I notice high cpu utilization on my HP 490 server as well. I stopped the service and started the program from command prompt and noticed the following error which otherwise don't appear anywhere else..

"this should never happen strID=..."

I tried various logging options and do not notice any error. This happens after a while when all the songs/video/pictures/playlists are scanned. Please advice if any further logging needs to be enabled.

Thanks

Hi Rick,

I run MediaSmartServer.net and we've just seen the HP 3.0 Patch 2 arrive. I run an EX495 that had the previous version of Twonky and it was running fine with no CPU load issues. However, after installing Patch 2 I'm now experiencing heavy CPU usage from Twonky, and it appears to be stuck indexing some videos on my server. These videos all play fine and display correct metadata in MediaInfo. The Log shows that Twonky adds them but some thread appears to be stuck.

What can I do to troubleshoot the cause of this?

Thanks,
Alex Kuretz

The D' Technology Weblog just reported that HP has released an update for EX490/495 MediaSmart Servers & the HP Data Vault X510. The update should also work with all MediaSmart Servers that’ve been upgraded to v3.2.1.4990, and is a 35MB download. More on this from Alex over at mediasmartserver.net Nigel “Cougar” Wilks and I have spent some time digging into the installer package, and discovered that the only changes included are the 5.1.1 version of the Twonky Media Streamer that is already included in the 3.0 software update for the previous generation servers, and new client software for Mac users.

Rick, I've mailed the file as well as repro steps to the email address you provided above.

Thanks for quoting my blog post about the 3.0 Patch 2 release. I have followed it up with another blog post that describes both this issue as well as another issue with Remote Media Streaming of Music files (change to Transcoding configuration that makes Remote music streaming unusable).

Hi Rick,
You mention above that "we delivered an update to HP that contained several fixes (TMS 5.1.2)". However, the 3.0 Patch 2 seems to contain TMS version 5.1.1. Can you shed some light on this?

Thanks Rick.

I was wondering why HP delivered TMS 5.1.1, when you already had supplies HP with version 5.1.2, which is supposed to be better and include fixes that most users on this and many other forums have been looking for. I am one of the users of HP MediaSmart server that have been eagerly waiting for TMS 5.1.2.

We just got an update today, but HP has asked that I not comment on these matters. So I'm respecting their request.

I've made a request that someone else respond to this post, but I have no control whether they do or do not. Sorry about this, I know this is frustrating. It's frustrating for me as well.

Thanks for the update Rick.
Although, I am not surprised that HP as asked you not to comment on this issue. It was an expected response considering how long it has taken HP to put out the 3.0 patch 1 update, delays in getting the installation media out to paying customers, and then releasing a 3.0 patch 2 with TMS 5.1.1 in it instead of 5.1.2.

Now, I wonder how long it will be before HP releases next update with TMS 5.1.2 (or 5.1.3) in it.

Perhaps we can just get the MSI or a softpaq with updated/latest TMS. But, this is not likely to happen.

I'm still not sure why a 5.1.3 standard WHS download hasn't been posted on the download site. Any comment from TMM?

The reason a WHS build wasn't posted for 5.1.3 is because none of the changes affected the WHS build. We're planning to post a release candidate for a new 5.1.4 build mid to late next week. I would expect there to be a build there for WHS as well.

As far as the HP issues, we had a call with HP last week and we're trying to push a solution out as fast as possible.

Rick, the contents of 5.1.3 RevisionHistory.txt disagree with you. Under TMS 5.1.3 section, it specifically mentions a fix for "MediaFeeds issue on WHS release". Also, I would imagine many users would benefit from fixes to"No video except WMV is playing on XBOX" and "Server takes 100% CPU on certain MPEG2 files".

I believe HP release of TMS 5.1.1 suffers from the "Server takes 100% CPU on certain MPEG2 files" issue. Please provide us and HP with TMS 5.1.3, so we can skip 5.1.2, and go straight to TMS 5.1.3, the best current available build. This would also eliminate users downloading TMS 5.1.2 WHS build that is raising some red flags with Norton AV.

Here is the content of 5.1.3 RevisionHistory.txt (the last modified date may be incorrect at the bottom)

TwonkyMedia Server Version 5.1.3
================================

What it is:
-----------
The TwonkyMedia Server shares music, pictures and videos via the UPnP AV protocol.

The server utilizes ImageMagick as a scaling engine (see http://www.imagemagick.org and
under the installed server directory cgi-bin/convert-readme.txt).

Also we would like to thank Mark Gillespie. Our Win32 setup is based on his initial work on the Win32 installer for version 2.9 :-)

I addition we would also like to thank everyone on the TwonkyForum for the feedback on the test releases.

Release notes for TMS 5.1.3
----------------------------

Changes:
o Add watchdog around MPEG2 parser

Re: HP MediaSmart Server issues

Post by mikebenton » Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:10 am

Like many, I am frustrated about the upgrade provided by HP for my EX470. I have successfully talked about 5 people out of purchasing the HP Home Server product because of the lack of response/support and a certain product that runs at 100%, 100% of the time.

I did pick up on this forum, however, that *.mpg files were causing issues. I have about 6,000 songs and thousands of pictures. I have only 3 MPG movies though. Temporarily, I moved these movies off the server. I am happy to report they utilization has gone down. My server is normal again!!!!

I look forward to a fix soon. I'm not holding my breath. I realize the delay is a result of HP. Because of this, I will not be purchasing another HP product in the future. My server is 2 years old. The hardware has held up great. The software/OS support has been the worst I've ever had. I could not count the hours I've spent troubleshooting errors. If I was to guess....I could have bought a small business server for $7k and called it a day....

Sorry, I'm a little bitter from the experience.

When Twonky would get stuck on a folder I would remove the Mpeg video from that folder. It is working now. I even copied them back and it is still working (not sure why that worked).

PS3 as the media player

Re: HP MediaSmart Server issues

Post by denisonc1 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 11:37 am

basically this post is a request for help resolving a very strange naming problem with video files (.wmv) creaded by Windows movie maker

WMM is running under XP and saves the .wmv files directly to the WHS

Essentially the PS3 only sees the video as named after the WMM project name, which in my case was pretty transient. I used one project to make 20 videos from different collections in WMM. The actual video files were saved with meaningful names but all I see from the PS3 is the same (project name) repeated 20 times. The videos play Ok though some have intermittent corrupt data and unsupported data messages

data base rebuilds dont fix the problem. deleting the offending files then a rebuild then copy back the files and rebuild again does not fix it either.

I have discoverred by trial and error that if I use a meaningful WMM project file name in each case and then save the movie with the same (default) meaningful name then Twonky correctly serves up the name to the PS3. But if you dont save separaate WMM projects for each movie it seems Twonky somehow sees the project name (mabe through a temporary build file) and just as much an issue Twonky rebuilds never recognise the actual movie file name or any later changes to that file name.

Any advice??

I can recreate the 20 movies but this will take many hours that I would prefer to avoid.
