External Subs on PS3 ?
I just installed a Qnap TS 119 with TwonkyMedia Server on my home network which includes a PS3. To my big disappointment the external subs included in my DivX folders won´t play on the PS3 . Isn´t Twonky Media server capable of this?
Re: External Subs on PS3 ?
Please someone? My question couldn´t possibly be so ignorant as not to deserve an answer... .

What are External Subs? SubWoofers or something?

Re: External Subs on PS3 ?
I assume he/she means external or soft subtitles, e.g. subrip (.srt).mgillespie wrote:What are External Subs? SubWoofers or something?
In answer to the original enquiry, no TMS does not seem to support external subtitles.
Re: External Subs on PS3 ?
Hi!
Actually, TMS does support subtitles. The problem is, that there is no standard support for subtitles.
The subtitle support currently in TMS is as follows:

Actually, TMS does support subtitles. The problem is, that there is no standard support for subtitles.
The subtitle support currently in TMS is as follows:
Best regards,For .avi/.divx files, TwonkyMedia server checks if a file with the same name and one of the following extensions (.srt/.sub/.txt/.smi/.ssa/.psb/.ass) exists. If such a file exists, two additional properties are added to the resource element of the item:
pv:subtitleFileType="SRT"
One of the following values according to the extension: SRT/SUB/TXT/SMI/SSA/PSB/ASS
pv:subtitleFileUri="http://IP:portnumber/disk/O0$3$25I45.srt"
URI of the file containing the caption data
These two properties are included in the <res> element of the according video file.
Constraints:
1. File name comparison is case insensitive. Therefore the files "file1.avi" and "FILE1.SRT" are considered matching.
2. If multiple subtitle/caption files are available for a video item, the server will include only one of the subtitle/caption files in the <res> element. Which one this will be, depends on the order of entries in the file system directory structure, so it is undefined – as a user in general only want to see one language in subtitels this is not a real issue.
3. File extensions are limited to the list outlined in the beginning of this chapter.

Who knows.... PV's lack of documentation on their software features is amazing to me... Instead of adding new features via cryptic changelog descriptions such as:
How about a proper documentation stating HOW to use them... WHICH tags in your files are pulled for each attribute... etc.o added more metadata properties for PVR support
o added upnp:artist role=composer metadata
I've voiced this before (a year or so ago), but nothing...
You'd figure if Twonky actually told people how to get the most out of their product, maybe they'd sell a few more copies...

Re: External Subs on PS3 ?
It's not really a question of Twonky supporting this feature or not, according to Christian this can't be done over UPnP. UPnP is the only way we can interface to the PS3.

Maybe Christian is right. However, there are other media server that can serve external subtitles. Most of them make the job through a process named "transcoding".
I think that your team have to work more on that process.
If you let me I could post some examples of the media servers.

Twonky Team
Maybe you can use the following tools in order to get information about how improve the transcoding in your server. My suggestion is to open a new topic, tell to the user that they can send their information in order to try to figure out how the DLNA products works.

For example, an open Media Server have the following post in their forum. It is very useful.

In order to support more devices let me know of what yours supports. One way is to send me the Sink protocol information of your device.
1. Install Intel UPnP tools
2. run Device Spy
3. It should list all your UPnP device and among them yout device (eg TV, console, etc)
4. Expand the device's tree and find service: urn:upnp-org:serviceId:ConnectionManager:1
5. Expand that and double click on GetProtocolInfo(...).
6. Click on Invoke and send me (or attach a file) the result in field Sink.
