TwonkyServer "freezes" on Synology DS 210j ...

Post by Jeeosch » Wed Jun 22, 2011 1:24 pm

Hi there!

I'm observing the following problem ...

I installed and tried all versions of TwonkyServer 6.x available as Kirkwood build. The outcome is always the same:
The server starts off very nicely scanning the respective directories on my NAS and being also fairly responsive to clients (e.g. iPhone app). Then, at approx. 16 MB cache size it gets slower and slower until it freezes completely.

The strange part is, that the two disks of my NAS are still extremeley active, when this happens!

I tried all kinds of settings according to recommendations found in this forum (e.g. nmcmode) and even created an additional 1GB of swap memory following a recommendation from the Synology technical support ... none of them solved the problem ... :(

As I am a registered user of TwonkyServer and really would like to continue using Twonky I'd be grateful for hints or maybe even a solution for this!

My setup:
- Synology Disk Station DS 210j, DSM v3.1-1742 (latest version)
- no 3rd party packages installed (except Twonky)
- TwonkyServer (tried versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.23, 6.0.30, 6.0.31-RC6, 6.0.32)

Any ideas???

Thanks a lot in advance!

Jeeosch

For info: I posted the same issue in the Synology forums.

Hi Rick,

it's about 50.000 audio files, 1.200 videos and about 3.000 photographs.

Do you have any ideas?

Best,

Georg

Hi Rick!
... and others which might face the same trouble as I ... ;-)

Here's another bunch of info taken from the kernel log of my disk station.
As you see, there is a memory issue.

As stated before I tried to address this with additional swap memory (1GB), but it didn't help.
The lines below are referring to my latest experiment: I installed TwonkyServer v6.0.31-RC6 on the data partition of the disk station, changing all paths in the config file to this location. I do not have additional swap memory in place at the moment as this didn't help before.

Wow. That's a large library! I'll share you comments with our engineers and let you know if they have suggestions.

Since you appear to be very tech saavy, in the meantime, you might want to look into upgrading to 6.0.34, and that if that improves the situation.

Hi Rick!
... and those ones interested in this topic.

I'm glad to tell, that the new version 6.0.34 seems to work on my NAS (Synology DS 210j) ... :D
(... that is at least the kirkwood build ...)

I also turned off and deleted the additional swap file to see if that has any impact, but luckily it hasn't, so everything seems to be back to normal ... :)

Thanks again!

BTW: I might be posting a little How-To later ... where should I put it?

Best,

Georg

Glad to hear that things are working now. :D

Please send your 'How to' to me at tmm-beta@pv.com and I'll post it for you. Of course, I'll give you the credit for writing it.
