Sony BDV-HZ970W Media Receiver and HP EX-495 MSS EX-495

Post by kevmeist » Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:54 pm

I am running the above hardware with Twonky V5.1.2 media server. I can see Twonky index my MP3s, JPGs, AVIs etc on the EX-495 hard drives and this is visible in the EX-495 displays. I can see my server from the Sony receiver but when selected on the receiver, I get a message like "File not available" on the attached TV screen.

Can anyone help here with what could be wrong (file permissions on the server perhaps?).

Thanks,

Kevin

When you look at the Sony TV lised under the "Media Recievers" from Twonky config page
What is your tv listed as?
You may have to force it as a differnt client
as it may not be getting the correct settings from the client database
what to choose, I dont know, But I do know it might be the wrong choice from the twonly client database
especially if it isnt in it list
try "ALL" of the sony ones, and maybe even the "Generic Media Reciever" one

It is also possible to try and create and add one to the database,
but lets not go there, as its a lot of trial and error

It came up as "Generic Media Receiver", I tried "Sony Bravia", Sony Network Media Receiver".

Have you any thoughts of which others to try as there a lot of "other" choices.

I don't think I tried "Generic DLNA 1.0"

I tried assigning the types below top the MAC address under "Media Receiver" in the Media Server settings on the HP MSS server this morning:

Generic DLNA 1.0
Generic Media Receiver
Generic Music Only Receiver
Sony Bravia
Sony CPF-IX001
Sony KDL-26J3000
Sony MR100
Sony NAS-CZ1
Sony NetJuke
Sony Network Media Receiver
Sony VGF-WA1

I still get the "There is no playable file" message for every one.

When looking at the settings in the HP Mediasmart Server (MSS), I see the MAC address for my HP MSS described as "Generic Media Receiver". I do not see an entry for HP MSS or similar. What should the "type" be for the HP MSS server? It would seem that Media Receiver" is not correct?

So, I changed the HP MSS "description" to the following:

TwonkyMedia Manager
TwonkyMedia NMC
TwonkyMedia Player
TwonkyMedia Renderer

None of these made any difference, I still get the same error message on the Sony DLNA Receiver. The Sony Rreceiver does see the server and shows up as a blue and white TM icon.

The database of music, pictures and video has now disappeared from the display in the MSS (not quite sure when these vanished. I tried stopping and starting the sharing, but still no files now. Dammit. Seems to me that this shouldn't be a difficult thing to do. Hmmm, I did try setting "media server settings" to default (a button in the MSS dialogs for media sharing. When I first tried to set this up, I could browse to the folders where my music, jpgs and video was kept, now I only see "Music, Pictures and Videos" settings but cannot browse to my own folders.

My bad, I can browse to my own folders. I deleted the "standard" ones and added my own folders back in again (obviously reset during my "default" mouse click.

I tried setting the MSS to the same 4 Twonky types again for the MSS, results below:

TwonkyMedia Manager
TwonkyMedia NMC
TwonkyMedia Player
TwonkyMedia Renderer

Still, the same error message for all of the above when I select "TM" on the Sony receiver.

Kevin

Your version of Twonky Server is quite old and possibly will not work with more recent Sony media player devices.

The latest version of Twonky (6.0.37) has a specific client adaption for the Sony Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System. This client adaption has some unusual options which only seem to apply to recent Sony media players.

I think you may need to upgrade your version of Twonky Server to get your media player to work correctly.

You should also verify that the media files you want to play are supported by your Sony media player. Refer to page 77 of the manual (http://store.sony.com/wcsstore/SonyStyl ... 229877.pdf) The list is very limited.

Thanks for the reply.

Two of the formats "supported" by the Sony on P77 are JPG and MP3s (of which I have plenty supposedly indexed by Twonky on the MSS). I'll have to check on the latest version of Twonky that you mentioned. I assume that is it is OK to run on the HP MSS?

On the "Buy It" page, it suggests buying Twonky Manager (which includes the Server). Is this also true for use on the HP MSS? (EX-495).

Thanks,

I would NOT recommend that you run TwonkyManager on WHS. It wasn't tested on that. TwonkyServer however seems to run fine.

Thanks Rick,

However, I do NOT see Twonky as an addin (although it certainly runs and does the file indexing. Is there a manual method of removing an old version of Twonky before installing V6.0.37?

I do see a Twonky directory with all the Twonky files on the C:\TwonkyMedia on the MSS C: drive.

Kevin

Hi Rick,

OK, I'll check that out.

But, based on current problems I have seen with the Twonky version that I currently have...do I need to spend the $20 just to see whether it works?

OR can I check it out and pay the license fee if it works OK? i.e. eval period of x days?

Thanks,

Kevin

OK, so I see that I can NEXT at the license enter and put that in later.......On the configuration screen during the install, it shows me 4 locations for Music, video and pictures. My wife and I keep those separate, so would need 6 locations to point to. I hope that by firing up the web browser interface that I can add 3 more for her. When browsing the MSS based folders, I could not see the folders under her username during the install.

OK, so now I have indexed 21,063 photos, 4,946 MP3s and 490 videos.

When I look at the Sony media receiver upstairs, I see a different icon (not the blue and white TM one) and it says "server is starting up, this may take a few minutes" then the server fails to start.

So, I am obviously getting further than before but still not working.

The server "uptime" clock is ticking upwards. See "Server Status" below:

Version: 6.0.37
Cache memory: 10996 KB
Last database change: 15:37:35
Music tracks: 4946
Photos: 21063
Videos: 490

Trial period
Days left: 30
Server uptime: 0 days, 0:12:52 hours
Server build date: Sep 21 2011 p0
Server restart pending: no
Windows Media DRM Status: ok

Network Interfaces: 192.168.1.104 (My HP MSS)

Ah, OK....managed to get it working mostly. Music OK, JPGs OK. Video (AVCHD starts to work, then says audio format not supported then the video hangs). Big improvement, not sure why AVCHD is funky (it is a new Sony camera/camcorder).

If AVCHD does not work then that is a problem with your Sony media player. Twonky just streams the media file as is, it is up to your media player to decode and render the file. And per your media players manual it cannot play AVCHD files via DLNA. See page 77 of your devices manual.

Doesn't P77 state "The system plays AVCHD-format files that are recorded via a digital video camera, etc. To watch AVCHD-format files, the disc". See #3.

Per the manual I found here- http://store.sony.com/wcsstore/SonyStyl ... 229877.pdf

Page 77 has-
AVCHD 5)
and Note 5) states-
5)The system does not play these files via the DLNA function.

Yep, saw that AFTER I posted the last reply. No EDIT in these forums it seems otherwise I would have changed it. Still, seems to me that #3 and #5 in the Sony manual kinda contradict each other. The odd thing is that the video "starts" to play and then hangs up. Hopefully, Sony will have some sort of firmware upgrade although I didn't see the BDV line on their support pages.

Now, I'm an experienced software engineer (for 42 years). I wonder how people without some background on these topics manage to get this stuff going?

Thanks for all of your help.

Regards,

Kevin
