TwonkyServer won't display subfolders in "by folder" view

Post by Nevik » Fri Dec 23, 2011 7:56 pm

Hey everyone,

I recently got a QNAP TP-219P+ NAS that brings along TwonkyServer to share media across the network. However, I haven't been able to sort out this one problem -- and it's kinda driving me crazy.
Note that today i also updated the NAS's firmware today, and it now runs TS 6.0.34

TS finds and shares media just fine, and the media server is visible on my network, but in none of the three categories (music, pictures, videos) can I see any subfolders in the "by folder" view. Instead, the only entry in there is "<current folder>" which lists all media files of the respective type (which are several thousand, which is just impossible to navigate through).

I've tried changing the TS Media Receivers options to any of the other views (restarting TS after changing it), but still there is no change.

I'm using Windows Media Player 12 as a client (both my computers run Win7 Pro 64bit) -- which I'm not very happy about, but which seems to be the only real option for windows. I'd especially like to get it to work with Windows Media, so i can use the Media Center that comes with Win7. (Media Center works well, and I've used media sharing between my two computers without problems)
Oh yeah, let me emphasize that. Media sharing works fine between the two computers directly (i.e. the subfolders are visible and usable there)

Unfortunately I have no other client hard/software I can use to rule out a problem with TS itself.

I've looked around the internet and these forums, but can't seen to find anything that is similar to this problem.
Apparently this isn't very common, or no one else navigates their media by folder.

I hope someone has some ideas and can help me, i'm really out of ideas here.

Best regards and thanks in advance,
Nevik

When you go to the TwonkyServer media browser web page, can you see your subfolders there? Some clients filter things like this.

Yes, via the webpage-browser, I can view all subfolders properly.

That's what threw me off -- it works there but not through an actual client. (I realize WMP is hardly a reference, but as I said before, there are no real alternatives.)

The problem persists, so any further thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Edit: Oh, and WMP does not generally filter folders out. It works when im viewing the media on either one of my computers from the other -- I can see and browse the subfolders properly. It seems to be some kind of issue between TS and WMP.

This probably would require a signifigant amount of engineering work on our end to fix. The one possible workaround I can think of is to go to the Media Receivers server settings page and change your client to Xbox. It's a long shot, but it's all I can think of right now. Let me know if it works.

Hi Rick,

unfortunately it still doesn't work. I have even set the view to "By Folder" for all the devices known to the TS, but that didn't change anything either.

I wouldn't want to cause you that much trouble.

Has no one ever reported this problem before? If this was a general issue between TS and WMP, I would assume someone ran into it before this.

Also, if you know of any other UPnP/DLNA client software for Windows that works with TS, I could give that a shot and see if that helps any.

Best regards,
Nevik

Others have reported issues with WMP filtering things. Sorry I don't have a solution for you.

I have seen this with WMP also

The possible choices for WMP to choose from for Videos
- All Videos
- Actors
- Genre
- Rating
- Parental Rating
- Online Stores
- Folder

The only one that works currently and in all previous versions of twonky for VIdeos is Genre

In my opinion, I think that the the issues lie with WMP,
and its hard coded thinking to Windows Media Streaming
and not truly with DLNA streaming,
even though it will stream via DLNA

I turned on some of the extra columns the one for folder location shows this as the path of the item
which may or may not explain WMP's inability to deal with folders correclty

Code: Select all

http ://192.168.1.10:9000/disk/DLNA-PNAVC_MP4_BL_L3L_SD_AAC-OP01-FLAGS01700000/O0$28I38415.mp4?WMContentFeatures=DLNA.ORG_PN=AVC_MP4_BL_L3L_SD_AAC;DLNA.ORG_OP=01;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=01700000000000000000000000000000&WMHME=1&WMHMETitle=OQAgAHAAbQBwAA==
Here is what is reported for a folder path of an item from a windows media server

Code: Select all

dlna-playsingle://uuid:67fecee8-6019-4f0b-ab3d-9996bf4bde3a?sid=urn:upnp-org:serviceId:ContentDirectory&iid={81215E63-79C5-4E18-B43D-35A0DA444A62}.0.8&HMEExt=.mp4&WMHMETitle=QgBpAGwAbAB5ACAATQBhAGQAaQBzAG8AbgAgAHAAbQBwAA==
